Nektarios,
Visit www.cowonamerica.com for mp3 players that are simply...there isn't a
word for it...perfect. Besides the rapping menus, that's it. The Iaudio X5
especially does everything one wants.
Thanks,

Subject: Mp3 player purchase.

 Hello list.
I know that this subject is on and off from this list for some time now.
I am on the market for a hard disk based player myself and I have some
 questions.
Iriver has discontinued the h340 and is now very hard to find. Since
rockbox only works for out of date players at this point, I will buy
something that is more current and I will have to put up with the
difficulties we all have when accessing something with out speech,
remembering menus, count key strokes etc. Is the iriver h10 20 gb
version reasonably usable? There is a touchpad as I understand from the
description. Can we use that thing? Can we go up and down the menus or
 file folders accurately?
Do we need special software to transfer files or it is as with the h340
 accessible with windows explorer?
I am also thinking about ipod 60 gb version. I think however that this
unit does not have any line in or fm tuner. Is the ipod accessible as
above? It appears that it has a click weel. Can you locate files if you
know where they are? Can you transfer files back and forth easily?
Do you have to edit mp3 tags for all this to make sence?
Any help is very much appreciated.

 Nektarios.

Hi:

It seems that Rockbox will support the Iriver H10 series when they get
aroung to it. If I were you though, I would make an extra effort to acquire
an Iriver H300 series unit. The newer units are more focused on their
ability to display video now. You should be able to pick up an Iriver H320
or an H340 on Ebay from a reputable Ebay store. I was even able to find an
Iriver h120 that way.

Hope this helps.

Is it possible to navigate to a folder with files and sub folders and

Hi Nektarios.

I've been very impressed with the creative zen 20GB player I recently
bought. You can add music to the player using a standard windows explorer
interface and copy and paste. It also has a touchpad for navigation but you
are able to switch on a 'clicker' and therefore count the menu options by
counting clicks. The menus don't wrap so it's easy to start again if you
lose count. It's an extremely well built player and can handle MP3, WAV
WMA formats. It has an FM tuner and voice recorder as well.

The sound quality is superb and there are many other features I've yet still
to play with such as using removable storage drives with the player.

One more point on the menus, you can configure the menus to suit yourself
with some sighted assistance so you can make them very minimal with just the
features you want to use.

I have documented the menus using web pages to illustrate how they work.
For example, you press enter on menu and you'll see the main menu. You can
then click on System to see the menu options in there and again click on
player settings to see that menu. If you're interested in them or any other
listers are interested, please e-mail me at the address below and I'll zip
them up and send them to you.

Regards.

 Nektarios.

Yes, it is an older modell, but an even better one in my oopinion. It
has optical in and out, which the 300s don't have. However, it can't
play video files, this is only possible with the 300s. Also, the 300s
have a display which is turned off after one hasn't pressed a key on the
300 for some time. The next key press doesn't do anything except
reactivating the display. At least it works like this with the original
iRiver firmware. Rockbox supports the 140 very well. Jonathan Mosen did
a review of the 140 with Rockbox.

By the way, Rockbox now also works on the iAudio X5, which another
member of this list recommended. IAudio players are available here in
Europe too. But my favorite is the iRiver 140. With the X5, one has to
use a docking station for a couple of things. For instance I believe,
that the USB port of the machine is on the docking station. Also the
iRiver has a built-in mic preamp, so that one can use normal stereo mics
with it. However, I do not know whether Rockbox supports this feature.

Do they make a hardware device that I can stick a USB flash drive into that
is a stereo component that can play mp3's? If not, what has a line out that
I can hook up to a stereo? Can I just use the headphone jack as an output,
or will that blow up the input? Finally, if I got something like that
digicette thing, could I use it in tape players that close like those on
boomboxes, etc? I know someone mentioned using one on blind cool tech, I bet
the reason they sound like a cell phone in the recorded files is because it
uses the tape head to some how record as well.

Hi Folks:

May first is targeted to be the next major release of Rockbox. There has
been major changes in the way in which speech will be accessed.

For anyone interested: do not install the latest builds of rockbox on your
Iriver. If you do, your speech will not work.

Cheers.

Re: Mp3 player purchase.

2006-04-13 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello:

Again: I wan't to remind you not to use the latest builds of Rockbox at
this time. If you do, your player will not speak. The H140 and Rockbox
review that Jonathan recorded was with an older version of Rockbox.

Cheers.

 Nektarios,

This is a link to a review of Rockbox on the Iriver H140 by Jonathan Mosen
which you may find useful once you get Rockbox installed on your player:

Michael, I just came home with my new iriver h140.
I finally decided to go with this player after much thought and
 availability reasons.
Do you have any tips on how to use this player to share? I am reading
the manual right now but it will help me start better if a blind person
gave me a few tricks on that.

 Thanks for any help.
 Nektarios.

 Nektarios, you wrote:

I am able to find an iriver h140. Isn't that an older model though? I
mean older than the 340? Are there esential differences between the
two? Is rockbox supporting the h140?

I think my review of the H100, which is quite similar to the 140 still
is available on the Main Menu on-demand site of ACBRadio. I used the
original iRiver firmware and still use it instead of Rockbox. But one
can have both of these worlds, because even with an installed Rockbox,
one can boot the original iRiver firmware with the beeps, fast forward
/ rewind with sound and the other features, which aren't available in
Rockbox.
