[PD] zexy/time

2013-01-24 Thread Max
hi list,
do the code for the timezones in zexy/time follow this convention?
http://www.timetemperature.com/abbreviations/world-time-zone-codes.shtml
how does zexy deal with code like EST which exist twice (for US and for
Australia)?
the helpfile is very brief about that.

This has been reported before, it seems to affect all Mac OS X 10.8. I have
no idea what's causing it, and it doesn't seem to affect the operation. Please

Re: [PD] Pd-extended 0.43.4 final builds

2013-01-24 Thread Seiichiro MATSUMURA
Hi Hans,

It's great to hear this!
Through checking this final builds, I notice 2 weird behaviors of it
working on Mac OS10.8.

1. When making Array first time, pop up Array properties always tells
its "Draw as" way is "Polygon". However, when I open Array properties
after Array made, it tells "Points" and it is actually "Points".
Is this a bug?

2. In Media - Audio Settings..., a tail of the device name of
"Built-in Microphone" is cut like "Built-in Microph". (see attached
jpeg) I am not sure whether this originally happens in Japanese OS. I
can't change the name of "Built-in Microphone" in Mac OS10.8
So does anyone who uses English Mac OS see this no problem?

I think these are not major problems, but I would like to know
solutions if possible.

Best,

Sei

[PD] Pd-extended 0.43.4 final builds

2013-01-24 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

I've started posting the final builds for Pd-extended 0.43.4. Here are the
Windows and Mac OS X builds:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pure-data/files/pd-extended/0.43.4/

These are the Ubuntu builds, there will be one small change in the final
builds: the version will be changed to 0.43.4 from 0.43.4~extended2:
https://launchpad.net/~eighthave/+archive/pd-extended/+packages

same as Ubuntu but for Debian:
http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2013-01-24/

And the source tarball, which also just needs the version change:
http://autobuild.puredata.info/auto-build/2013-01-24/Pd-extended_0.43.4~extended-source.tar.bz2

The version change will be in tomorrow's builds.

Re: [PD] gpio on the raspberry pi from within pd ?

2013-01-24 Thread Miller Puckette
Hi Charlot -

I think either I or a grad student (we'll see) will be writing a Pd extern
to do this efficiently -- for the moment it would be possible with a Python
script (using netsend/netreceive in Pd) but having an extern would be more
lightweight and probably more robust. I'm running an informal seminar about
Pi stuff and once we get it together we're planning to blog what we end up
doing.

The reported error is in regard to an option for a
text item on a canvas widget, not an option for the text
widget.  Those two concepts share the same name--
"text"-- but that is it.

tk -> text widget = powerful multiline text display, lots of control over
text/font settings, can embed images and other tk widgets
tk -> canvas -> text item = limited text display inside a prexisting canvas,
limited control over text/font, no embedding

ah thats helpful thank you!

it might be too much but how about turning on/off gui-plugins directly from
a patch by sending messages to pd?

also i did something like:

 proc RandomInteger1 {max} {
 return [expr {int(rand()*$max) + 1}]
 }

to randomize font size etc. right now when i open my patch i have to click
on and off the patch to refresh is there just a refresh pd command i
can send so i count refresh with a metro for example to create little
animated randomized object boxes?

i thought you could send a [;pd refresh{ or something like that but i cant
find it. am i crazy?

[PD] Using Xapian for the Pd Search Plugin

2013-01-24 Thread Jonathan Wilkes
I've looked a bit at the Xapian API.  Here's my preliminary route to changing
the search plugin to use Xapian.

***Build the Index***
* Read the file for each doc.
regsub out all "#X foo number number" stuff since it won't help the search
* Optional: prefix all object names with a XAPIAN prefix so that the user can
search for instances of objects if
they want.  Additionally include the object names unprefixed so they count
toward a score when the user isn't
searching just for objects
* Prefix all the pd META stuff so that users can search by category, author,
etc., and also include it unprefixed
so that again it counts toward a general score when not searching for a
particular field
* Include the following as the document data: base directory, filename, pd META
KEY/values pairs.  I include the
pd META stuff in the doc data since we want to display some of it (keywords,
maybe other stuff in the future) in
the search results.

Then it's trivial to check for database existence, and only build it if it's
not there.  (Maybe just have the last link
on the homepage be "Rebuild Index".)

Now we have an index so

*** Search ***
Search.  Depending on speed, I might just keep it the way it is, showing ALL
results instead of the Google way of 10 per page or whatever.

*** Search by Category ***
This will be nicer than it is currently-- instead of cryptic regexp text
showing up in the search bar, it will just be
the prefixed keyword, like "Kbandlimited" or "Ksignal".  That's easy enough to
grasp that I don't think we'll need
some special syntax for category searches-- newbies can just depend on the home
page links.  Plus, if they want to search for several categories at once they
can quickly figure out it's just a matter of prefixing a
"K" in front of the category and are way less likely to generate a tcl error as
they would be screwing around inside a regexp.  (I could even make a
mousebinding, like will add a category to the search bar without
triggering a search, so they can use that to gang several together.)

Also, if I understand the tclxapian interface correctly, I can just hand off a
tcl string to Xapian so the search-plugin can get out of tcl "quoting-hell".
(Thus, much less chance of generating errors because of malformed
lists.)

Any commments, suggestions?

In Ubuntu and Mint at least, it seems that x-ttcidfont-conf no longer does
anything. My /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType folder is
totally empty, even after a dpkg-reconfigure.

/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType is already included in the
Pd-extended search path by default for many years now...

Re: [PD] motion-tracking (was Re: help)

2013-01-24 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Hey Sujay,

Welcome!

I agree with IOhannes and Ed, the key is to filter the image as much as
possible before trying to do the motion tracking. Oftentimes the best results
come with using an infrared camera and infrared lighting so that you can
control the lighting for the camera tracking separately from the room lighting.

Just in case, have you seen the motion tracking examples in Gem? Go to the
Help menu, then Browser, then click on Gem, then examples, and 04.video.
There are a couple different techniques for motion tracking there.

Gem uses Pd's open_canvas() to find fonts.
simply add /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType or whatever
to your "-path".

also, when compiling Gem you can specify a default font (with full path).

also, as user you can override the default font in your gem.conf.

finally, adding font-search mechanisms to Gem is very low on the
priority list.

Re: [PD] gui elements documentation / list

2013-01-24 Thread Hans-Christoph Steiner

Pd uses almost all of the available widgets in Tk:
http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.5/Keywords/W.htm#widget

The 'text' widget doesn't respond to -size:
http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.5/TkCmd/text.htm

You need to specify the point or pixel size as part of the font:
$tkcanvas itemconfigure text -fill red -font {Helvetica 16} ;# points
$tkcanvas itemconfigure text -fill red -font {Helvetica -16} ;# negative is
pixels

You can also create a 'font' to have that setting in one spot:
http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.5/TkCmd/font.htm

Please add anything you find useful to the wiki:
http://puredata.info/docs/guiplugins/GUIPlugins/

Most of those are just tk settings, not specific to Pd.

http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.5/TkCmd/canvas.htm#M48
http://www.tcl.tk/man/tcl8.5/TkCmd/canvas.htm#M144

Text items don't have a -size option, hence the error.

tk events and tcl arrays specific to the Pd GUI can be found here:

[PD] one more bug : vera.ttf

2013-01-24 Thread batinste
With the freshly installed Pd-0.43.4 ("extended") compiled 04:55:28 Jan
24 2013

on my ubuntu 12.10 64bits, when i instantiate [text2d], pd tells me
[text2d]: cannot find font-file '/home/batinste/vera.ttf'

Well...

~$ locate vera.ttf
/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/examples/05.text/vera.ttf
/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/Gem/examples/data/vera.ttf

i clicked "defaults" in the preferences, i've got no .pdextended in my
home directory, so

~$ vim /etc/pd-extended/default.pdextended
[...]
path1: /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType
npath: 1

This directory /var/lib/defoma doesn't exist... Maybe pd should look in
its own directories to find vera.ttf.

[PD] gui elements documentation / list

2013-01-24 Thread me.grimm
i finally have a chance to play around with the gui-plugin stuff. using
"tkcanvas itemconfigure" im playing around with changing the look of my
patches in performance mode. question: is there a list / documentation of
the gui elements? other than reading over the pd-gui tcl code?

without knowing much i was doing things like:

$tkcanvas itemconfigure text -fill red -font Helvetica -size 16

but -size gives me error

so maybe there is something more other than a trial and error approach or
use of css knowledge which obviously does not completely translate.

Very brief release notes are in

http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/Pd_documentation/x5.htm#s1

of for al lteh gory details you can look at the git log on:

http://pure-data.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=pure-data/pure-data;a=log

...

Would it be possible for you to run 0.44-1 again, save settings (so that your
registry breaks again) - verify that it's broken still for 0.43, then somehow
copy all the Pd registry settings so I can see them?  Even better would be
if you could show me the Pd registry settings before and after saving them
from 0.44 so I can try to guess what setting it is that's causing the trouble.

thanks

With the chroot method, networking is entirely handled by the host, so that
has been working pretty well for me. But I don't run network services in the
chroot.

Here's how I did it:

Re: [PD] pd vanilla 0.44-1 ASIO

2013-01-24 Thread Miller Puckette
Very brief release notes are in

http://crca.ucsd.edu/~msp/Pd_documentation/x5.htm#s1

of for al lteh gory details you can look at the git log on:

http://pure-data.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=pure-data/pure-data;a=log

...

Would it be possible for you to run 0.44-1 again, save settings (so that your
registry breaks again) - verify that it's broken still for 0.43, then somehow
copy all the Pd registry settings so I can see them? Even better would be
if you could show me the Pd registry settings before and after saving them
from 0.44 so I can try to guess what setting it is that's causing the trouble.

thanks

How about using sudo?

sudo -u username -i "command"

"-i" runs the command provided in a login shell, so it runs any

rc.local is the last thing in the init.d stage, so no.

What kind of logging do you have. Had a look in syslog?
Or put the pd launch in backticks and try to catch its stdout for ssome clues

Re: [PD] Pd launched via rc.local can't search path

2013-01-24 Thread Miller Puckette
This is mysterious to me - but it might help to put copies of all needed
abstractions in the directory that holds the patch you're asking Pd to
load. There mihgt be some chroot magic going on ni teh boot sequence that's
changing the meaning of paths somehow - that's a wild guess but at least if
it's something like that you can work around it.

Starting via rc.local will mean the application is launched as root, and since
there
is no login shell and cwd associated at the time it is launched the paths you

[PD] Pd launched via rc.local can't search path

2013-01-24 Thread Pierre Massat
Hi,

I'm trying to get Pd to run at startup. I've put the command in
/etc/rc.local.
Everything works fine, except that Pd seems to be unable to search the
paths I specified (either in .pdsettings or directly in the command line).
I'm trying to use a patch with the reverb described in the audio examples
(G.08 I think), and there's an abstraction in it which lives in
3.audio.examples.
Every time I boot Pd starts all right, but I get errors because it can't
create the abstraction.

It's a bit weird because the very same command works like a charm once i've
logged in.

Any clue ?

Cheers,

Pierre.

That sounds very promising. Sounds like a good project for someone to take on
who wants to further the Gem port to embedded systems :)

I just set up an RPi chroot on one of the PdLab machines, it was pretty easy
to do on Debian. Then you just run 'dchroot -d -c raspbian-armhf' and you
have a shell in a virtual RPi. You can get access if you want:

Right, but the question is whether Pd-extended should go ahead and require
tcl/tk 8.5.
The ttk requirement of search-plugin.tcl-- which loads by default in the next
Pd-extended--
is one reason.  Avoiding two messages in each "Fonts are ugly/weird/broken"
thread is
another:

User-to-entire-mailinglist: Font problem x y z...
Answer-back-to-entire-mailinglist: Are you using tcl/tk 8.5?
User-to-entire-mailinglist: Yes so what next / No but now I am thanx

Much less likely with tcl/tk 8.5 requirement:
User-to-entire-mailinglist: In 2006 I set up my Pd box and stepped out for a bit

to go to medical school. Now I updated Pd and suddenly there's this error.

What happened?

Re: [PD] pd vanilla 0.44-1 ASIO

2013-01-24 Thread Hrvoje Radnic
now it seems even worse... now I can't use 0.43-3 anymore. Is it because I
tried to run 0.44-0 for a moment? Just to mention, I have run it from
completely different location i.e. separate disk. As far as I remember, all
0.43-x versions worked nice on my (winxp + rme  hammerfall) system. Things went
wrong somehow when I started to use 0.44-x.

Thanks for your help!

change from 0.44-0 to 0.44-1 broke that but who knows.

I happen to have a Hammerfall and a working PC so once I get them in the same
building I can try this too.

It's an ARM SoC .. there's no way to replace the graphics-chip (even if
there would be a full-GL pin-compatible one). I think 'not practical' is an
understatement ;)

I've been eyeing the progress on this for a while, seems the project has
been stagnant for a long time already (unless there's work being done under
the radar). It would be absolutely awesome if GEM worked on GLES chips as a
whole range of mobile devices would be able to do a lot of neat things!

There are some projects that are working on providing a replacement libGL
that presents a (full) GL-spec to the software and does the
translation/emulation behind the scenes, see:
http://boards.openpandora.org/index.php/topic/11506-opengl-implementation-tldr-more-games/for

Re: [PD] Jack support on Windows

2013-01-24 Thread Julian Brooks
HI all, hope I'm not barging in...

I've had troubles recently with qjackctl on debian wheezy. The simplest
solution was, as IOhannes said, have jack running beforehand. I found just
running jackd (the server element) was most reliable.

Mine looks like this for example (from command line):
jackd -T -ndefault -p 128 -v -R -P 90 -v -T -d alsa -n 2 -r 44100 -p 128
-d hw:1,0 -M -H

Trial and error is your friend here.

Best wishes,

Julian

does any opengl application work on the beagleboard? (e.g. glxgears)
does the beagleboard even have openGL? (or does it only have
openGL-ES, which is currently not supported by Gem)

I haven't looked at cross compiling options yet. Frankly, I'm
fascinated by the fact that Raspberry Pi is self-supporting. All the
GNU tools and other familiar deb packages working on a pocket size
circuit board. That's why I like RPi (and not the Android/iOS
gadgets). If you know what you're doing, you can start some job and
leave Pi alone. In the case of compiling Pd, the job was interrupted
by errors several times. Install instructions could be more complete.
I should make some notes and post them.

Re: [PD] [PD-announce] Pd-extended 0.43.4 release candidate 1: last chance to report your bugs

2013-01-24 Thread Ed Kelly
Don't know if this has been mentioned before...

On Ubuntu Lucid (10.04LTS) Pd-extended-0.43 deb from the launchpad.net
repository.
Pd won't start properly in that it complains that it need Tcl/Tk8.5.
Tcl/Tk8.5 is installed, but so is Tcl/Tk8.4.

(Tcl) UNHANDLED ERROR: version conflict for package "Tk": have 8.4, need 8.5

    while executing
"package require Tk 8.5"
    ("uplevel" body line 10)
    invoked from within
"uplevel #0 $tclcode"FAILED TO LOAD
/usr/lib/pd-extended/extra/search-plugin/search-plugin.tcl

So I tried changing the symlinks in /usr/lib to point to 8.5. This
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 2013-01-24 09:45 libtk.a -> libtk8.5.a
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 11 2013-01-24 09:45 libtk.so -> libtk8.5.so

Still no good.
Could Pd-extended be made to force the use of the 8.5 libs?

'Undenormalized' Pd build for Raspberry Pi is temporarily parked here
for testing purposes (will be removed when Miller's release is fixed
in this sense):

www.katjaas.nl/temp/pd-0.44-0-normalized.tar.gz

This is a locally installed Pd, like Miller's distribution. You can
start it from command line with the full path to
pd-0.44-0-normalized/bin/pd. It's not a .deb, so it can't be installed
under supervision of package manager.

[pix_movement]/[pix_blob] is just a standard way to get movement data
from an image. [pix_movement2] is another.
there are some openCV objects out there as well (look for pix_opencv),
which might have more sophisticated tracking algorithms (e.g. based on
shape).

but in all these cases: if the output signal is too noisy, you should
try to reduce the noise by applying a filter: filters are the magic of
tracking.
