The concern about red dye was with relation to the dye used decades ago, which is no longer being used for anything. The red dyes used today seem to be safe, and are also used in human food products. That being said, there is no evidence that hummers are more attracted to the sight of red dye,

Thank you, Dan. I had a tough time getting shots of them at first, but now that they seem to be getting used to me, it wasn't all that difficult. The toughest part was getting enough DOF and shutter speed. I finally bumped the ISO up to 400, and that seemed to be about right for f/7.1 - f/8,
