I caught a faint whiff of something bad, and checked the attic. I found
another raccoon, full grown, just inside of the entrance above where I found
the other one.

That is unsettling. It's good, of course, that they won't be
destroying your home, but I have to wonder if they might have gotten
into some poisoned bait somewhere.

That was a big problem a few years ago, when we experienced a rabies
outbreak/scare. People, and I use that term very loosely with any
creature that will do this sort of thing indiscriminately, put out
poisened bait for raccoons. Raccoons, or any other mammal for that
matter, with rabies
