I think the *ist D did all this (matrix stuff) just about right! An old
Pentax-virtue, really!

I use my camera on center weighted metering. It's what I grew up on, and I
find it more predictable than matrix metering, since I never know what the
camera is really thinking.

I almost always shoot manual mode. The green button Hyper Manual
makes that pretty fast.
