Thanks to all for your thoughtful suggestions.
From the variety of opinions, I see that there is no trivial solution.
Hopefully, I'll get some time to play with this shot soon to see how of some
suggested ideas would work.

I like the squarer of the two crops; it feels more intimate.

I like the square crop, the larger crop has a lot of stuff in it that isn't
needed. You could try a 2x3 crop with the right edge in the same spot as on
the square crop, and the bottom just below the silver pendant.

Definitely #2, the square crop. All that space both sides of #1 is
useless and weakens it. Says Hi, I'm a snapshot!
But as others have said, you could also do a 5x7 or 8x10 crop and see
how well those tighten it up too.

For me, it depends on who the photo is for. The problem I see with the second
is that the vertical format + taller figure + taller hat make the woman on the

woman on our left. So there is a bit of tension there, 'tis
First one. It has slightly more air. The second one with tighter crop
is too tight to me. In fact given that object above and to the right
from the ladies in the frame, even the first picture may be a bit too close.
