Where do I look for it running? Ah - System Profiler. I wonder if there
are any adware/spyware checking apps for the Mac, I'll go look on

Hello Bob,
I've run into a few that are worse than that. They actually load two
copies as services. If you terminate one, the other immediately loads
it again. So you can't clear them from memory. On top of that,
during shutdown, they write out to the registry a new entry with a
random file na

Best way to deal with these viruses is to blast them into kingdom-come.

Good advice. I just put a tilde (~) in front of the name, and that seems
to do the trick.
And let's not forget that one can run msconfig and see exactly what's being
loaded on startup, both services and programs, and you can check/uncheck
boxes and see how the changes effect the system. For exam

Good advice, and good pointers.
It might be a good time to mention that some adware and spy programs come
attached to useful programs that one may DL from the net, and that removing
the adware or spyware may cause the main program to stop running.

Dave,
Did you look at what Spybot found?
It sometimes peels away too much, so it's a good idea to NOT run it on
autopilot.

While on the topic of malware, I should mention a file that caused me a lots
of aggravation and wasted time: something called noupdate.exe. It
prevented Norton and Windows from doing any updates, and would stop Norton
scans as soon as they started. I'm really glad I was able to get rid of it.
Dave, you're lucky you have XP. I run XP, Norton Antivirus, and I'm
connected to the Net through a DSL router. Even so, my computer was
attacked in July. 58 files came through in 2 minutes, many of them multiple
copies of viruses and worms. My address book was blank, IE Favorites nearly

a way to make it know to block that next time. I also use the two programs you
