Yes this is true, but it also isn't downtown and like the Pentagon is low
rise (4 stories) just has a very horizontal spread. And it is on a campus
that if you didn't know better you would think it was Military.

Me too!

I'm not getting any younger, and there's a lot of the West Coast I'd like to
visit (or, in some cases, re-visit).
My wife's knee-replacement replacement seems to be doing well, so there's a
chance we'll both be up for some kind of photo-trips. She's not going to walk
much, but many of the national parks have a friendly attitude to disabled
parking placards, so in a lot of places we get to drive rather than walk or
ride the bus. That was very handy when we visited the Grand Canyon!

My impression is that the alignment has to do more with where it ends up when
you put it in the shoe than the lens. In theory every lens will be centered in
the same place, so it’s basically just turning your camera into a rangefinder.
I certainly don’t doubt that the $130 Oly/Nikon sights work better than making
one yourself for $20.

If I had a 3-d printer I’d be tempted to make some sort of rectangular tube I
could just mount in my hot shoe for rough framing .

Re: Hot shoe to red dot sights.

2021-11-25 Thread John Sessoms

Main benefit for the Olympus is it doesn't require any kind of adapter.

Stick it on top, turn it on, EASILY align it for the lens I'm using. And
EASILY change the alignment if I change lenses ...

IF I pay attention, I can write down the settings and already know the
alignment for each of the lenses I might want to use it with; mount the
lens & set the dials accordingly to get the same setup every time.

Not sure it would work that well (i.e. easily) with sights that require
adapters.

Something that appeals to me about the u4/3 system is the diversity of bodies
available for it. You could go full OMD acts like an SLR when you want all the
things, or a more minimalist body when what you most want is it being light
weight. I can see a lot of appeal to an OMD with one of the 25mm f/0.9 lenses.

I was given an u4/3 body a while back and a couple of lenses, and it is enough
to make me wish I had the budget for a u4/3 lightweight system. Unfortunately
the body I have is so damned point and shoot and helpful that it’s damn near
impossible to use. Also the internal battery is dead so every time you change
the battery you have to reset the clock.

Oops, that reminds me I didn’t take my cameras off of DST, need to go do that
now.

Re: Pentax or Olympus?

2021-11-25 Thread John Sessoms

The Olympus is micro 4/3 format.

I believe Pentax is still has the lightest, most petite APS-C cameras
and the K-1 may be the lightest "35mm" Full-frame.

Plus the OM-D is mirrorless. No mirror box. Not even a tiny micro 4/3
mirror box.

Going the other way, I actually find the Pentax bodies a bit smallish
for my clumsy hands if I don't have the battery grips installed.

The one Olympus item I am considering is their EE-1 Dot Sight that
mounts on the hot shoe.

significantly lighter than the OM-D M1X, even with a grip).

I was rather curious about this. For decades, Pentax was agreed to be the
lightest and petitest of the major manufacturers, generally without a lack of
facility. I can remember discussions here about it being one of the
attractants. It will be interesting to see if you decide that the saving in
mass was worth the expenditure.

I saw Prince Andrew on Monday. I’d just dropped my Boris bike off at Green Park
station when a whistle-blowing police motorcycle escort barged its way along
Piccadilly, guarding two black Range Rovers full of cops. In the front
passenger seat of the first car sat the disgraced prince of the realm,
stony-faced.

I wondered what he’d been up to that required so many policemen to arrest him.

I didn’t see who was in the second car.

Nothing in Google News. Let us know if you find out.

around 40C most days we are now in a very unusual (for Nov.) cold spell
with a lot of rain - 103mm in 3 days. "Freezing" at 20C! Anyway, another
great series of nature shots. I'm most curious about the dog statue on
top of the stone plinth.

Re: PESO San Antonio Lights

2021-11-25 Thread ann sanfedele

Corey...
I said earlier I took my Mom the San Antonio in 1974 around CHristmas...
(She was living in Houston then )
I found my travel journal and it turns out it was 1976 (still before
that tall Marriot was there)

My aunt had a friend who had recommened accomodations.. this is what I
wrote inmy notes
"The motel-hotel Ethel's friend recommended was very handsome, Spanish
style & [our room]  looked out
on the canal called the San Antonio river. We are on the first floor, a
few feet higher than the river walkway."

It was not like me to not mention the name of the place.. does it ring
any bells with you?

Glad your photo got me to thinking about this  - I enjoyed reading my
journal of that trip

Nice scene...but I confess  I'd like less lawn in the forground to bring
your wife closer to the front and the buildings and trees as well..

changing the aspect ratio - that is, keeping the width the same.
