Re: Non-news story of the day: Kodak not making acetate
Those old prints won't last forever. They should be digitised and cleaned up so that people can continue to enjoy the movies for the next few centuries. The film prints should be locked up in an archive. I had a conversation about this just yesterday with one of my neighbours. He was asking about my French cinema classes and I talked about how valuable they are from many different perspectives. When I was a student French cinema was not on the curriculum, we just did language, literature, and linguistics. Even if it had been part of the syllabus, the range of movies on offer would have been minuscule because we could only have watched them as a group, on film, which is expensive, fragile and bulky, and would have had to be circulated to other courses around the country. Nowadays, whatever we study I can either find locally in a shop, or order from amazon.fr, or even watch as a download, sometimes for free. To support his classes the teacher shows clips on Youtube of related material, something that would be impossible without digitisation. From the film-makers' point of view I imagine digital is also much better. Far cheaper, no loss of quality, easier production and, which is important, a very low cost of entry for new directors. The medium is not the message. B On 16 Jun 2013, at 02:06, John Coyle jco...@iinet.net.au wrote: Makes me wonder how a little cinema at a very small town called Pomona in Queensland will fare. There used to be a theater around here that would play those films. It's gone. There's still one over in Durham that does a couple of film festivals every year which might include this film, but you can't just buy a ticket to see the one film in the festival you might want to watch, you have to buy a package for the whole thing and the prices are outrageously inflated. I mean gold circle seats for a Rolling Stones tour inflated! Unless it gets posted to YouTube or I happen to see the DVD at the checkout one night when I'm buying groceries, I'm not going to see that film. From: Darren Addy I imagine that there is *a lot* of film being put in freezers by some people in Hollywood (which would be sort of artificially inflating the demand seen right now), but yeah - the writing is on the wall. They stopped production of all slide film about a year and a half ago. Now it's just BW negative and color negative film. a couple of iPhone pics
Two pics that I grabbed this morning, just because I had a phone in my pocket. The rose is blooming on a bush that was here when I bought the house 21 years ago. I suspect it's close to 30 years old. And Grace was on my work computer, which is sometimes allowed when grandpa gets a day off. She's playing MInecraft. The pic of Grace is noisy both because the camera probably reverted to its highest ISO and because I pushed the shadows in PhotoShop. But the moment would have been lost if I had run off to get my K-5. Re: PESO: Mark B. (Another workplace shot)
Thank you, Chris. I really hope to get another shot of him as there just seems to be a lack of detail in his face. Maybe it's me, but it just doesn't seem as sharp as my other portraits from work. Of course, I was using the M-28/2.8 on this one as opposed to the FA 50/1.4 and F 50/1.7 on most of the others. Re: PESO: Spring Fawn
The fence is keeping them out. This fence is protecting my neighbor's shrubs and perennial flowers. My neighbor on the other side has a 12 foot high fence around his vegetable garden to keep out the deer, and 2x8 boards at the bottom to keep the rabbits from digging under the fence. Since the garden is across his driveway from his water connections, I let him hook up to my irrigation system in return for a share of the produce. Works quite well! Re: PESO: Mark B. (Another workplace shot)
Thank you, Bob. I was afraid I just wasn't using the lens well. It just struck me as strange that most of my zooms -- even the cheapo Sears ones -- would be sharper than a 28mm prime. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's frustrated by it. I hope to find a reasonably affordable and sharp lens in the focal length one of these days. I think my even A28-135/4 is better, but it weighs a ton and doesn't seem to like focusing at the short end at all. Not to mention the fact that the f/4 maximum aperture is awfully slow for the low light I work in, even on the K-5. I guess I've gotten completely spoiled by my fast 50's. Thanks again for the kind words. I get a lot of satisfaction from the portraits I get at work, on account of the personal connections. There's something extra-gratifying about accurately capturing the people you've come to know well in life. -- Walt On 6/16/2013 10:52 AM, Bob Sullivan wrote: Walt, The M28/2.8 lens can be disappointing. It happened at a bad time, too. We flew to North Carolina for the National High School Outdoor Track meet this weekend... After the first 400 meters of the 4 x 800 meter relay championship race... in which my son his team were competing .. The camera stopped working. I had shot a couple dozen frames at the meet already, no problem. But, then, it just stopped. Wouldn't focus, wouldn't shoot, no matter the on/off, in/out/switch of battery, lens switch, shooting mode change, etc. it turns on, but when you press the shutter, it freezes, and the LCD says battery depleted (though it is not). Then, it won't do anything. That was yesterday, same story this morning. So. Stuff happens, I get that. Still, I'm finding it hard to imagine a worse betrayal of gear right now. I have been shooting these guys all year, they have had a great run, so to speak, since the winter season. This was their last race together. This was a big deal. They ran their best time ever, finished in the top 10. And I have no photos. Not sure if this is a warranty repair or not... Especially since the mirror flop fix of last year... Will check my paperwork when I get home. Wondering if I have reached the point of throwing good money after bad, at least on this camera. Re: K-5 dead
Yeah, my only consolation was that this was a personal assignment. But, the other families have come to rely on my meet photos, and I enjoy sharing them. If this were a paying gig, it would be an unmitigated disaster. The other lesson I've learned is to keep my bag with me - sometimes, I am tempted to leave it with my husband in the stands as I roam the track perimeter... Bad idea, since I've had a couple of times when a battery did need to be replaced, or the flops started, and I needed to switch bodies in the middle of a race. When traveling, though, I didn't really want to bring everything... I thought 2 bodies was enough. What could go wrong? Re: lightroom 5 upgrade available
Don't know about video, I haven't played with it yet. I tried using the adjustment brush on a portrait and it works better than I expected from the demonstrations I've seen. For the NAPP members - If you haven't been to the NAPP site lately, you'll find a lot of online training classes for LR and PS. Not just short clips. I sat through the Portrait Retouching with LR5 class. It's a bit over an hour long. Kelby takes you through a complete retouch of a portrait. Completely in LR. Never goes to Photoshop. This should really speed up the workflow for the people that do this a lot. NAPP is running a 24 hour free trial membership. If I weren't a member I'd be tempted to sign up for the trial and watch all of the lightroom classes. Personally, I think the membership is well worth the fee. That's at http://photoshopuser.com/ Julieanne Kost has also updated all of her free videos for LR5. http://blogs.adobe.com/jkost/lightroom-training-videos GS George Sinos www.GeorgesPhotos.net www.GeorgeSinos.com On Sat, Jun 15, 2013 at 12:32 PM, Christine Aguila christ...@caguila.com wrote: Thanks, George. Just a note, the first time you open an existing catalog it will create a new, updated catalog for version 5. A -2 will be appended to the end of the catalog name. The installation of LR5 was quick but my main catalog with about 30,000 photos took about an hour to convert. It leaves your old catalog and LR4 in place. They ran their best time ever, finished in the top 10. And I have no photos. Not sure if this is a warranty repair or not... Especially since the mirror flop fix of last year... Will check my paperwork when I get home. Wondering if I have reached the point of throwing good money after bad, at least on this camera. Maybe you'll be hearing from me again on for sale Friday (For the record, my back-up camera, the K-01, also made the trip, my husband was shooting video with it at the time. Re: K-5 dead
No, according to the tech I took it to first (assuming it to be a less serious issue) took one look at it and told me the shutter has collapsed and must be replaced. Basically the shutter doesn't retract fully so you are left with a black stripe across the top of all of the images. If you go through the sensor clean routine you can see the shutter blades blocking the bottom of the sensor. In all other respects it still works normally. Apparently it is the usual way that shutters fail when they have been heavily used, except that mine has only done 8% of it's rated life. I find these reports of premature K-5 issues a little disconcerting. I don't know if any of you use Twitter (or other social media) but making a little noise on there (and directing comments to Pentax Ricoh Japan, as well as in your home country) could get you a little expedited attention.
