peso Joe's bar

2014-01-30 Thread Larry Colen
Joe's is a bar in downtown Boulder Creek. Getting the exposure right with
the lit sign, the neon, and everything else was a bit of a challenge,
particularly since the neon blinked.

I ended up doing a long exposure, catching it for a short time with the
neon lit, then subsequently covering the lense when the neon was lit
and only exposing when the neon wasn't lit, to keep the highlights from
blowing out.

I suppose that if I weren't so lazy, I would have just done it using HDR.

Re: peso Joe's bar

2014-01-30 Thread Bruce Walker
I think you did a pretty good job with the exposure, Larry, and it
might be better done your way than HDR'ing it, unless you were very
careful in post.

However it has an unfortunate overall haze to it; possibly veiling
flare? I wonder if HDR would have avoided that?

Great subject!

I'm now at the conclusion that the power supply is probably
faulty. Do any of our resident Mac experts have any further
suggestions? It's a first-gen single-processor 1.6GHz G5. I
just checked and it's just a couple of weeks over 10 years old!

I've wondered if it would be worth replacing the battery on the
motherboard but I'm not really sure.

I've only kept that machine around because it has no resale value
and Minolta didn't release drivers for later OS versions because
they exited the scanner business. I couldn't stand Vuescan when
I last tried it so I don't really want to go down that route. I
guess the good thing about it having no resale value is that I
can replace it cheaply through the secondhand market.

Unfortunately I was just getting started on a project to scan

resort to a macro lens and a light box.

I'm a PC guy, so I don't know much about Macs, especially the PowerMac,

I just checked and it's just a couple of weeks over 10 years

I've wondered if it would be worth replacing the battery on
the motherboard but I'm not really sure.

I've only kept that machine around because it has no resale
value and Minolta didn't release drivers for later OS
versions because they exited the scanner business. I
couldn't stand Vuescan when I last tried it so I don't really
want to go down that route. I guess the good thing about it
having no resale value is that I can replace it cheaply

Unfortunately I was just getting started on a project to

Re: OT: Problem with G5 PowerMac

2014-01-30 Thread Bruce Walker
It's worth a trip to Apple to get a quote there before one orders the
parts for a DIY.

About a year ago my wife's 2007 iMac blew out its supply. I priced a
replacement from OWC or similar and I was all set to order it and open
that iMac up (very tricky little buggers), but on a whim we dragged it
down to Apple first.

They quoted a price for repair, including parts and labour, that was
about 20% less than the mail order supply alone. So we let Apple do
it. Three days later we had our iMac back good as new.

Thanks for supplying those links.

I'm not able to access the pins while it's plugged in and I'm a bit reluctant
to run it disconnected as switchmode power supplies tend to need some load to
operate correctly. And with the plugs out it probably won't switch on as the
soft-power switch is out on the front panel and connected to the motherboard.
The power-on signal needs to get through somehow :)

GESO: Outlet Track, Wanaka

2014-01-30 Thread David Mann
The Outlet Track follows the first 3km of the Clutha River from its source at
the edge of Lake Wanaka as far as Albert Town. This track forms part of the
run course at Challenge Wanaka and I enjoyed it so much that I brought my wife
down there for a look before we went home. Oh, and I wanted to take some
photos :)

A baker's half-dozen, hope you enjoy.

Looks good. Yeah, I haven't figured out how to do HDR yet. (IE I suppose
tripod and multiple exposures and set up a user function for that. I
suppose.)
