OT: PC Video Cards
This morning my PC greeted me with a few simple beeps - one long and three short. It then booted but the screen was blank. I reseated the video card and nothing changed. I then pulled some of the RAM and it booted without a probelm. Put hte ram back in and it seems to be working fine. I have double checked the manual and the beeps mean video card failure. Been a few years since I bought any PC gear. What are the current standards in video cards? Assuming that I need to get one, I would like to get something intending primarily to use it with Photoshop. I am currently using an NVidia GTS 250 with 1 gig of RAM - probably pretty rudimentary by current standards. But, of course, I don't want to shell out an arm and a leg... Re: OT: PC Video Cards
What kind of connector does your video card have? More precisely, what kind of slot does your PC have for a video card? That makes a big difference in what's available. This computer, the one I use for general internet, is old enough it has an AGP slot. When I had to replace the video card a couple of years back I had a hard time finding any AGP Video cards. Everything is now PCI-Express, although there are still some plain vanilla PCI cards around. And a quick look just now, it appears that PCI-Express is now 2.0, 2.1 or 3.0 in addition to the original PCI Express. Also comes in regular or x16 flavors. NVidia GTS 250 is apparently the chip set various manufacturers can use. On 3/1/2014 10:39 AM, Mark C wrote: This morning my PC greeted me with a few simple beeps - one long and three short. Re: OT: PC Video Cards
As John mentioned, you need to verify which type card you have. It's probably PCI-E unless your computer is very old, but check to be sure. You don't need all the memory and high end stuff for Photoshop so a 1-gig card is plenty. I recommend going for a fanless card, myself. My computer is much quieter now :) On the other hand, if you don't mind a noisy fan, I can send you my old PCI-E card for free!
