RE: PESO: WH 17
Hey Chris - Were you ever at the Kingston plant? I was an engineering apprentice at Hawker's in Kingston (1956-7), plated cockpit parts for the Hunter, did paint tests for the wing and tailplane panels, and ended up metallurgical testing of steel components in the test lab - learned so much there! Very specialised and I remember seeing a bloody great sheet of hot Perspex being draped over a greasy wooden mould. It was then subject to a lot of polishing to make it optically perfect and to remove any distortion - after all, the pilot ideally would want to see the target / runway in the right place.. Re: PESO: WH 17
Thanks, Chris. The canopy might have been spotless and optically perfect when it left the factory, but after a few months in actual use -- especially under combat conditions -- it got pretty dirty and scratched. The plane captain would wipe it down before each flight, but usually just ground the sand and dirt into the surface. It was always clear enough to complete the mission, however, but it could cause imperfections in any photo taken through the canopy. Very good Dan - and through a canopy too? They used to make canopies for Hawker Hunters, Harriers and Hawks in the aircraft factory where I did my apprenticeship. Very specialised and I remember seeing a bloody great sheet of hot Perspex being draped over a greasy wooden mould. It was then subject to a lot of polishing to make it optically perfect and to remove any distortion - after all, the pilot ideally would want to see the target / runway in the right place.. It took many hours. Chris On 15 May 2017 at 04:10, Daniel J. Re: PESO: WH 17
Thanks, Bob. I was in the wingman spot, as he is ahead of us and to the left. It is much harder to get a good shot from the lead plane, as it had to be "over-the-shoulder," and there are obstructions in the canopy in that direction.
