My DA 18-55 WR is superb. Very sharp & feels good. Better than the
unusually good version of the FA 28-80 I had before. The best thing
about it was the price - a mere $12 because it was "shop soiled",
meaning a bit of damage to the box! I used it exclusively with excellent
results on the K5 during our UK trip last year.

PESO 2018 - A Stop by the Side of the Road - GDG

2018-05-20 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
On the last leg of the way home from Southern California, riding my Moto Guzzi
V7III Racer, I stopped for a few moments rest by San Juan Bautista. Seemed a
good photo opportunity, so I pulled out the iPhone and made a panorama shot:

  https://flic.kr/p/24AU5SQ

This is looking northwest; Highway 101 is directly below, down the hill from
this exit/overpass. It's about halfway between Salinas and Gilroy. Home is
about 35 miles from here... :)

enjoy!

Re: Lightroom CC

Hi Stan:
Today I did some testing on the syncing issue you speak to at the end of your
post. I took a photo in imported it to my iPad Pro via the SD card reader and
plugged into the Lightening port. The frame imported to my camera roll, then I
imported into the Mobile Lightroom app. I then made some tweaks. Then I
forced a sync. I then opened LR Classic Cheers, Christine on my laptop and the
frame was synced with the adjustments I made on the iPad Pro.

It would be great if Godfrey could jump in here and help us clarify issues :-).

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Stanley Halpin
Bob, my understanding (which may be a year or two out of date) is that the LR
Classic CC (which I use BTW) allows for the Cloud-based storage and synch of
selected Collections from within LR. If you are going to a total Cloud-based
storage system, then that would be Lightroom CC, not Classic. Which sounds like
a wonderful system for those that have uninterrupted access to high speed wifi.
For me, traveling in the jungles of Peru or on the high seas without good
connections or in the UK or EU without having signed up for a unlimited data
plan, it doesn’t make sense.
When traveling, even with good connections to the net, I still don’t synch via
Adobe’s Cloud platform because with LR Classic CC you can only synch and work
on Collections that have been created back home on your desktop or laptop and
sent off into the Cloud. Which would be fine if I wanted to have access to
older images and review/rate/edit in my spare time. But I don’t. Again note
that my understanding may be out-of-date…

I always use TAV and select the app and shutter speed I want. Shooting skyward
without exposure comp, anything other than a white bird ends up underexposed.
If one dials in ISO 1250 and bumps the exposure two stops in rendering, the net
result is ISO 5000. So I figure Im better off going for a conservative shutter
speed when possible.

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Christine Aguila
On the laptop version, on the right side panel where all the develop tools are,
you can see the adjustments that are made when you choose the presets located
on the left-side panel. Take a screen shot of the medium contrast curve on the
laptop, then try to copy the curve diagram. For Punch and Face/Scenic
sharpening the numbers are explicitly shown.

I do a catalogue back up to an external drive. Am I right in thinking, that I
can import catalogue back-ups into my laptop Lightroom Creative Cloud and plug
in my external drives to the laptop and I should be good to go?—Or do I have
this wrong?

DA 18-55 versions

2018-05-20 Thread Mark C

Anyone have experience with the different version of the DA 18-55 kit lens?

I've been working with the IR converted K01 and have found that my
original version 18-55 lens is by far the best lens I have in terms of
not having an IR hotspot. It is really rxcrllrny, with virtually no
hotspot at f16 and wider. The 17-70 is very good, but at at f11 and
beyond a hotspot is clearly visible.

But my original version 18-5 is not stellar in terms of sharpness and
has a cheap feel to it, in particular wrt to zooming. From what I read
the mark II version of this lens is a better performer and the WR
version in particular has a decent build quality.

Has anyone used both versions and have opinions on the relative sharpness?

And is the build quality of the 18-55 WR on par with, say, the DA 16-45?

Mark

Re: Pentax Photo gallery

2018-05-20 Thread Brian Walters
I'm getting a time-out as well. I think I last checked in late April when it
was working OK.

I wouldn't be surprised if Ricoh is getting ready to pull the plug - they lost
interest in it years ago and, I think, many users have too. I last submitted
images in 2016 when it look 6-8 weeks for approvals to come through. I
understand it can now take 5-6 months which is a pretty clear indication that
not many are voting.

Ricoh's lack of interest can be seen by no additions to the Premier Collection
for several years - surely there would have been some contributions worth
including during that time - and I think Kerrick James has been the Featured
Artist for well over a year.

Last time I looked, the K-1 and KP weren't even included in the cameras list.

It's a pity but I think the PPG's time has passed - even if the server comes
back on line.

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Bob W-PDML
Hi Christine,

Thanks. How did you find that out about punch and sharpness? Is there a site
somewhere that reveals these arcane secrets?

It's true for version 6 and earlier that the catalogue must be on a local
drive, but of course it can't be true* for CC otherwise it wouldn't work across
devices. The difference is (I assume - I haven't looked into it yet) that with
CC the catalogue is not a separately locatable thing, from the user's point of
view.

If I decide to subscribe to CC then I will migrate everything. It's easier to
have everything in one place. Adobe seem fairly generous with the storage. I
will look into how I can sync automatically with my local storage for back-up,
not use, in case Adobe gets deleted overnight by Russian hackers.

Cheers,
Bob

Re: Lightroom CC

2018-05-20 Thread Christine Aguila
Hi Bob:

I am a Lightroom Classic CC version 7.3.1 user on my laptop MacBook Pro
s/Retina 2013 13-inch.
I also have the Lightroom mobile app on my iPad Pro 10 inch and iPhone 6,
though I have only just started using these, so I’m still learning.

Punch equals Clarity +30 and Vibrance +25.
Sharpen for Faces equals Amount 35 and Radius 1.4 and Detail 15 and Masking 60
Sharpen for Landscape equals Amount 40 and Radius 0.8 and Detail 35 and Masking 0

I haven’t migrated a catalogue to the cloud. I thought catalogues could only
sit on a drive—external or internal. I think you can export a catalogue and
import it to an existing catalogue, but if what I just said is true, wouldn’t
the imported catalogue have to sit on a drive as well?

I have Lightroom 6, version 6.14 on my iMac 2011 desktop, but my understanding
is Adobe is done with the stand alone, and will not be offering further
updates. I’m quite undecided about what to do. Should I bring all photos over
to the laptop or continue working the two versions? What to do? What to do?

Cheers, Christine

Re: Pentax Photo gallery

2018-05-20 Thread Jostein

Hm.
Been several years since I logged on. Tried to connect by various means,
and had some online tools look for the server by its IP address, but to
no avail. Nothing wrong with the address space, queries to the server
are routed through the traffic junctions one would expect. I think it's
the particular server that's offline. Since there's no press statement
about turning the site off that I can find, I suspect it's a technical
fault. Hope it's not something fatal.

I just saw a Pileated Woodpecker in my back yard. First sighting here in
years. Of course, just as I was tying to slip quietly away to grab my
camera, it flew off into the woods.

I have been hearing a "different" woodpecker in the woods over the past

Flickr

2018-05-20 Thread cole

As we announced on April 20th [1], Flickr has agreed to be acquired by
SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.
SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and
who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr
and our creative community.

NOTHING WILL CHANGE IMMEDIATELY WITH REGARD TO YOUR FLICKR ACCOUNT. The
Flickr product and brand will live on under SmugMug ownership. You will
still access the same Flickr you know and love at www.flickr.com [2] and
via our mobile apps. SMUGMUG AND FLICKR WILL REMAIN SEPARATE BRANDS and
you will continue to have options for free and Pro Flickr accounts.
Until we notify you otherwise, you will continue to use your current
login credentials.

As a result of the acquisition, Flickr accounts will be governed by
SmugMug's Terms of Service for Flickr [3] and Privacy Policy for Flickr
[4]. The Terms of Service and Privacy Policy of Flickr's current owner,
Oath (formerly Yahoo), will not apply to the use of Flickr after the
acquisition. You have until May 25, 2018 to review SmugMug's Terms and
Privacy Policy. If you do nothing in that time, your account will simply
transition to SmugMug's Terms of Service for Flickr and Privacy Policy
for Flickr after the acquisition.

If you do not consent to SmugMug's Terms and Privacy Policy, you will
need to delete your Flickr account through your Account Settings [5]. If
you want to preserve a copy of your photos, be sure to download them
from your Camera Roll [6] first.

Read more detailed FAQs [7] about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We're happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward
to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug
family. Thanks,
The Flickr Team

Re: The D FA 70-200/2.8

2018-05-20 Thread Igor PDML-StR

We use Amazon all the time for various purchases. (It's very convenient
with Amazon Prime.)

Every so often, the goods are packaged poorly or inadequately.
Sometimes they survive the shipment, sometimes - not.
It seems to me that on the big scale, it is cheaper for Amazon to resend
something then making sure that everything is packed well in the first
place.
(It's similar to how some HDD manufacturers were not testing the
lowest-line hard-drives: it was cheaper for them to deal with the
defective ones under the warranty than to test each and every drive.)

Just a few weeks ago, we ordered some music scores. They send it in an
envelope, and all together they got bent/broken badly. We complained,
they reshipped. It came packaged exactly the same, bent-broken even

worse, and in addition to the the book was punctured through the envelope
probably with some sharp object in the middle - through at least a half of
the book. The call center has no control over how the items are packaged
(miles-and-miles away), - they only flexibility they might have is to ship
from a different distribution center.

But, - Amazon is good about re-shipping, refunding, etc. - and admitting
their fault in the first place.

Walmart's customer service is an antipode to that.

... and I always recall "Ace Venture: Pet Detective" scene when I get a
beaten-up package from UPS/FedEx/USPS..

Paul, I hope your replacement lens arrives in a good shape and will serve
you well.

autofocus at 200mm and was rear focusing at 70mm. I complained to Amazon
and showed them the package it shipped in. They apologized profusely and
sent another lens by overnight delivery. It will arrive Monday, well
packed I assume..

Hey Paul, if you buy Amazon Market Place stuff you will receive "Open
Box Items, Returns or other such less than NEW items".

Amazon is NOTORIOUS for this however much they "Apologize".

There is no excuse from them if you purchased New Items. Putting a
Shipping Sticker on the original Pentax Lens Box is SACRILEGE and
bound to shake loose the innards of the lens.

I received a new Lens from Amazon India, packed in a huge corrugated
carton with inflated pillow packs and bubble wrap inside. But I did
take some time to phone in to Amazon in advance.

Enjoy your new baby as it is a fine lens, though a bit heavy for old
