three of us had gone to veedur dam near chennai in the hopes of seeing
raptors. we just managed to sight one short-towed snake eagle flying
high above. but had plenty of luck with butterflies though :)

http://something-feathered.in/2018/09/10/8-butterflies-and-2-of-moths/

gear: k5iis and the da 50-200 WR. a couple of them with the sigma
150-500...

comments welcome.

thanks Alan. there is a 'topknot' but it's invisible from this angle.
but the indian ones seem to be generally darker (from a cursory perusal
of images on the net)

Another fine image, Subash. The subject is quite dark in colour & shows
no topknot - rather different to others I saw on the internet. I
expected it to be more like the African Pied Kingfisher.

NYT obit of a photographer I’d never heard of. (There are MANY, of course.)

A couple quotes that got my attention:

“I don’t interpret, nor do I adjust anything in the darkroom,” he continued. “I
am a realistic photographer.”

When he photographed Eisenhower, he recalled, many of his colleagues relied on
their newfangled gadgetry while he patiently waited for an unanticipated
opportunity.

“I had my Leica and that was all,” he recalled. “I looked at them all and
thought, ‘There is usually some hitch — when their film is being moved along,
that will be when there’s an interesting picture to be taken.’ ”
