Thank you, Ann!

Is that the Pizzeria Uno on E Ohio Street in downtown Chicago? There might be
time to make a stop there… :D

I don't know exactly how much of my time there will be taken up by business,
most of the time I'll be up in Waukegan area. But if there's time, and dinner
calls, a bit of the original Chicago deep dish pizza sounds real good! I might
have a full day to spare on my hands..

Yes: I posted that set of photos some time around November 2019.

You won't be passing through Chicago to and from the airport .. .
Wauegan is one of our burbs.. and 2 miles north is the town of Zion

Chicago proper..

Sorry you aren't really staying in the city... but you can get stroll

a different look than what you are used to.

Re: Small sensors are better than you think

2021-04-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thank you, Juan! I appreciate the compliment! :)

The lure in all technical subjects for technically minded folks is to
concentrate on the technology, whether or not the results have a positive
impact on the results of the endeavor or not. I do my best to avoid the
'constant search for perfect, noise-free images' and try to think about making
photos I like from a different perspective. I don't get annoyed at what others
do other than when I get suckered into doing it too … which happens,
occasionally. 

It's a lot easier to talk about cameras from the perspective of megapixels,
sensor size, et al, than it is to discuss photographs. Discussing photographs
means we have to think about what we're seeing, capturing, and why/how it
affects us ... what our intent in presenting it might be. Can't just look at a
spec sheet for information on that…

The Moment camera app allows you to save captures as DNG raw files. It works
well, but there are some circumstances when the Apple Camera app does a better
job due to combining captures from multiple cameras and outputting an .HEIF
file. I use both camera apps with the iPhone 11 Pro and have gotten some
excellent photos out of it.

The iPhone 12 has a couple more features in the cameras than the iPhone 11. I
haven't spent any time with a 12 yet.

Re: GESO: Magnolia Blossoms

Nice series.
We have one magnolia tree in the front garden that is already loosing a
lot of the blossoms.

It is a pity that flowering time of our tree is so short.
Some of our neighbours asked whether it is OK to collect the fallen
blossoms, I believe to make some sort of essence.

We have five magnolia trees on our property. One, inside the pool patio,
never loses its leaves, and has blossoms occasionally throughout the
summer. Two smaller ones, that I planted more recently, lose most of their
leaves in the winter, and have one or two blossoms at a time in late spring
and early summer. The other two, which were here when we bought the
property 25 years ago, are much larger, and grow along the edge of the
wooded area to the west of our lot. They lose all their leaves over the
winter, and then have many blossoms in spring, before any leaves appear.
These blossoms are from those large trees, which are now in full bloom.

My old Huawei P20 Pro outperformed my 1st generation Q. My wife's iPhone 11
outperforms my old P20 Pro, and as an aside, the camera in my Note 10 plus.
The Q was an odd camera. There really wasn't a market for it even when it
was fresh on the market other than the Japanese teenage girl brigade and
nutbars like myself that will buy pretty much anything that takes pictures
and has the name Pentax on it.
The teenage girls have long since moved on to cell phones.
It was a clumsy size, not big enough to be a real camera, but too big to be
an easily pocketable point and shoot if the standard zoom lens was on it.
Even with the standard lens it was kind of thick.
They should have made a retractable lens for it, but that would have been
throwing money out the window.
It did punch above its weight regarding image quality, but this was negated
by it's slowness.

It was kind if cool with the standard lens and clip on viewfinder. I never
came to like cameras that don't have viewfinders.

The compact camera market is pretty much done, I suspect the bridge market
isn't far behind. The future of cameras is expensive higher end products
with sufficient separation from cell phones that it will be a while before
they catch up.
Hence the 2k APS-C camera with a real optical viewfinder.

I think that properly edited the color version would be as nice as the black

Thanks, Yes the Q is something special, looks like a toy and they put
it on the market as a toy. 250+ toy colors, toy lenses. The fisheye is
more or less serious and the body cap lens a crazy idea. Even a build
in software bokeh function. Quality control of the lenses is so so. I
have a bad 02 and 08 (purchased new) if you have luck and find good
ones of the 01 02 06 and 08 they are real gems and should be labeled
as Limited.
I think Pentax lost it's mind when they killed the Q line. At that
time I dreamed of a Q with an OVF and tilt screen. Instead I learned
how to shoot without looking at the screen, including this shot :)

Thanks, Toine, Ralf, Ann, and Olga!

Magnolias can be messy, but the blooming season is short, and where they
are located in our yard is never a problem.

I have heard many different species referred to as "tulip trees," but I
never use that name for magnolias.; I am most familiar with the African
Tulip Tree, which is an invasive species in Hawaii:

I have many, many photos made with small sensor cameras. When I shoot with
them, I think of shooting with my Minox 8x11 film cameras: so much DoF that you
don't think about it, the lens is always wide open at f/3.5 (or f/5.6 in the
case of the EC)..

You frame and expose based on the whole scene, not just the primary subject. It's a
different mindset from the "ultra-shallow DoF" look that seems so popular in
recent years.

Hmm. I'm headed off to Chicago for four days to conduct some business. I was
debating on what camera to take along … don't want to carry much. Now I think
I'll just load up a Minox and slip that into my pocket. Thanks!

I'd say they all but killed them already. The one leftover reason is the
tactile experience of using a camera that is actually a camera and not a
touch device. I love that, but the convenience of using one device for so
many things so big that those quaint reasons aren't enough.

Think about this: even a high end compact from say 2005-2006, at 8 MP or so
and with a small sensor makes a lot worse images than the better modern
smartphones.

Re: Small sensors are better than you think

2021-04-17 Thread Juan Buhler
Thanks Godfrey!

Great photo! I think there's something really annoying with the constant
search for perfect, noise-free images. I get it, cameras nowadays can
resolve every photon in a scene without noise at all. Boring. Art is a play
between lost and found, between what you show and what you suggest, or
better yet, what the viewer thinks you show and or suggest. This photo by
Godfrey is a good example of this.

Having great tools is just that, great. But seeking perfect sharpness and
rendition regardless of whether these things contribute to the image at all
is what I said--boring.

However, I'm grateful to those who review photo hardware and show the rest
of us what's sharp and what bokeh looks like. That helps my effort, when I
want a sharp lens or something that does this or that, I can find that info
by looking at what the pixel peepers said.

Thank you for sharing these! I love magnolia trees. Is "tulip tree" a
different name of the same tree or a different one entirely?

The last image of the gallery stood out to me.

I seriously need to look into RAW capabilities of my iPhone 12. That could

Re: Small sensors are better than you think

2021-04-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Nicely done, Juan! Beautiful photos, as always, too! :D

I have many, many photos made with small sensor cameras. When I shoot with
them, I think of shooting with my Minox 8x11 film cameras: so much DoF that you
don't think about it, the lens is always wide open at f/3.5 (or f/5.6 in the
case of the EC)..

https://flic.kr/p/2hKjQ6b

You frame and expose based on the whole scene, not just the primary subject.
It's a different mindset from the "ultra-shallow DoF" look that seems so
popular in recent years.

Hmm. I'm headed off to Chicago for four days to conduct some business. I was
debating on what camera to take along … don't want to carry much. Now I think
I'll just load up a Minox and slip that into my pocket. Thanks!

OED says “so named because the wood was formerly used to make ‘dogs’ (i.e.
skewers)”.

This may be the origin of the popular British pastime of dogging, when you go
out in the evening to the nearest woods looking for a right old dog to

GESO: Magnolia Blossoms

2021-04-17 Thread Daniel J. Matyola

These cameras have become basically unnecessary given that we have things
like the GR with an APS-C sensor (and the 16MP GR2 is one of my favorite
cameras of all time). But I really think there's something about the images
coming out of 1/1.7" or so sensors at around 12MP that compares well with
grainy 35mm black and white film.

They're terrific little devices.
