Forgot to mention the rx10 has enough resolution and less noise to crop the
bird pics, the nikon doesnt. Also birds in flight is easy with the rx10 and
impossible with the nikon. Maybe I should try the rx10 ;)
And If you try the g9 and 100 400 leica you are sold.

OT: The vagaries of rainfall

2022-03-11 Thread Alan C
The 65 year average seasonal rainfall for Phalaborwa is 540mm. Higher
global temperatures allows the air to hold more water vapour and
therefore the rainfall would be expected to increase. We had 730mm in
2019/20 & 947mm in 2020/21. This season seemed to be following the same
trend with 627mm already recorded by the end of Jan. Now, Feb. is
usually our wettest month & March quite wet too so it looked like we
were heading for over 800mm again. Mother Nature obviously had other
ideas. Only 14mm in Feb. & 2mm in March so far. Unseasonably hot &
unpleasant too - mid 30's (C) virtually every day. The rainfall in the
latter part of the season mostly emanates from cyclonic activity in the
Mozambique channel between Madagascar & the continent. The people of
Madagascar have already been battered by several but only only one had
made landfall in Africa & then in the north of Mozambique & Malawi. This
year all the others peeled of and went back into the Atlantic - what a
waste - the ocean is full enough already! Perhaps we will still make 700mm?

I got a nikon p950 and now a p1000. Perfect for birding.and walking around.
Sold my 150 450 and switched to panasonic gx9 and g9 with leica 100-400,
leica 12-60 and olympus 9-18 lenses. Much lighter and the glass is amazing
and half the price.compared to pentax.

When I got the nikon I looked at the rx10 which is a better nicer cam but
2000 3000 mm vs 600mm is a no brainer.

Didn’t Toine recently get a small superzoom and post some rather nice photos he
took with it?

I had a Lumix FZ50 and it was my favorite “point and shoot” because the
controls were set up so that it handled pretty much just like an SLR.
Unfortunately it sucked in low light and replacing it was what led to my buying
the K100.

Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;

Re: OT; I'm Tired

2022-03-11 Thread John Francis

According to Sony the DSC-RX10 weights 1.095g (2lb 5oz). A K-5 weighs 750g
(1lb 10.5oz),
so even with a 50mm/f1.4 it weighs slightly less than the Sony.

A K-5 with the 60-250 zoom does weigh just about twice what that Sony weighs.

The Sony, though, has a sensor even smaller than a 4/3 sensor - only about 0.75
the size.
(i.e. the "35mm equivalent focal length" conversion factor is roughly 2.8! to
put that
in roughly comparable terms, the drop in sensor size between the four types of
sensor
("full frame", APS-C, 4/3, and the so-called 1" sensor in the Sony) is
basically the same
between each sensor size - you'll see a comparable drop-off for each size
reduction.

I never felt the need for a K-1 - I was happy with the performance I got from
the APS-C
sensor in my K-5. But I thought long and hard before deciding to take that
extra step
down to a 4/3 sensor (although, like you, I was finding the weight of a full
camera bag
was putting a limit on just how much gear I could comfortably carry around).

Same here. I ended up with long-haul Covid fatigue not a long time after
getting my strength back from rotator cuff surgery. So the 67 went. (wimper)
And my woodworking is going really slow these days. On Monday I’m picking up a
better bandsaw that will make things much easier in the shop. (Laguna 1412)

All film equipment is gone. I’ve got the K70 & A5100. Both are relatively older
tech Maybe the same sensor? Certainly close siblings.

I’m looking to get a FF Sony and stay with the K70.

(Semi-)Retirement is next year.

I think I read that it’s half the weight of a Sony APS-C DSLR with a medium
zoom.

Re: OT; I'm Tired

2022-03-11 Thread Stanley Halpin
One option which I have somewhat adopted is to stop using “big glass.” E.g., on
our recent trip, I did not take the 70-200 or the 15-30 zooms. Instead I took
an A-20mm, 28-70/2.8, and 100 macro. And an A-200mm. I did take extenders (1.4
and 1.7) for the 100mm and 200mm in case I needed longer, but virtually never
used them. I may have used the 200mm only once.

Part of my reasoning is that the K-1 sensor is so good that a cropped 70mm or
100mm shot will be quite good, and maybe better than if I had taken the same
scene with a longer lens held shakily in my arthritic hands. Using a tripod
would solve many such issues, but that would mean carrying and using a tripod.
I can’t imagine trying to hold steady a camera which zooms to 600mm! 300mm is
my absolute limit for hand-held.

Meg has a Leica D-Lux, about 6 years old. It stopped working on our recent trip
, I have sent it for repair. She is indifferent, has become quite comfortable
with her phone’s camera. If the Leica is repairable, I have my eye on that as
my backup/alternative to the K-1. My “pocket” camera is the GRiii which I quite
like, but it is fixed 28mm equivalent and the Leica has a limited zoom. (28-90
or something like that.)

I'll bet it's got plenty of depth of field, at pretty much all focal
lengths.  I do understand your issues.  I too am tired, and I'm not 74
yet.  One of the reasons I decided to not pursue full frame.

I feel your pain.

I am 80, and getting down on my stomach with the K-5 IIs and my Fa 100 F
2.8 macro to try to shoot crocuses was a real pain. I wound up using the DA
35 2.5 Macro Limited instead and just crawling closer.
