Re: Drive purchase alternative to OWC?

2022-05-17 Thread Paul Stenquist
Drives don’t have to be Mac specific. Most suppliers will describe their drives
as PC or Mac. Amazon has good deals, and they accept returns for cash or
replacement, no questions asked.

Pacific Macs in my neighborhood is good for used gear.

For external drives, I wouldn’t necessarily go to OWC.

There are a few facebook groups for folks who push obsolete macs long before
their “use-by” date, and I’ve gotten some good advice there.

Drive purchase alternative to OWC?

2022-05-17 Thread Rick Womer
After a few decades of being a loyal OWC customer, I’m looking for a new vendor
for Mac accessories.

A new Mercury Elite Pro external drive had a defective power switch, and
frequently spontaneously disconnected while running (without losing power). OWC
sent a replacement, which is doing the same things.

I have just spent 35 minutes on the phone (mostly on hold), and the best I can
get from a customer service supervisor is an in-store credit once they receive
the defective drives. Sheesh.

So, is anyone happy with a Mac-oriented computer company other than OWC?

I remember that I had looked at Peak Design and not liked it, but didn’t
remember why, maybe the non-standard plates was it.

Have you used a PD tripod?

Buy any old tripod you want. Because you know then that the missing
one will reappear. :-)

Seriously, I have a Manfrotto Befree carbon fibre with the 494 head
that I bought a couple of years ago. It is compact, lightweight but
surprisingly sturdy. That said, I have mixed feelings about it.
Everything on it is twist locks, so it takes forever to set up or
take down. I am also starting to suspect that one of the twist locks
on one of the legs is wearing already, as it won't really stop
turning when tightened down. The head has a different design of lock
for the plate you put on the camera base, which can be fiddly to use,
too.

Peak Design is an option. For a tripod it's very light, compact and sturdy.
It's head is an annoyance if you don't have PD plates on all your gear.
Some generic arca plates (the square ones) also fit without trouble. If you
remove the protection stops all arca plates fit.

Re: LR slideshow

You're going to want to import them into LR and make a collection. It's
pretty straightforward after that.

One google search said to make a new collection. Do I load the photos from
my disk to this collection or do I import the files then make a collection

Using standalone ver 6

Any assistance is appreciated and a little something extra will be in your
