Amen. Mother Earth provides for us, and the rest of life, generously. Beyond
our pitiful capabilities of imagining. Ungrateful, we decided she needed
improving. We see who was the wiser. Still we refuse to learn

I live close to a fairly hilly, relatively unpopulated part of England. In the
1960s it was mooted that a large reservoir be built there to service the steel
and chemical industries about 60 miles south on Teesside. This entailed
constructing the biggest (at that time) reservoir in Yurp and tunnels from its
catchment to the river south of that, then another to the river south of
_that_, the Tees. The plan being for water from the reservoir to go to the
first river, then be abstracted and tunneled to the second river before being
finally abstracted for use in the industrial complexes.

Except the industrial complexes closed/reduced in size/moved elsewhere for
better tax benefits, etc. So the water was not needed. Now the reservoir is a
major leisure and wildlife resource that just happens to provide drinking water
to most of the north east of England.

In south eastern England there is a chalk substrate, so groundwater literally
disappears into the ground when there is a shortage of rain. It is also the
most highly populated part of the British Isles. When there are complaints of a
drought, it is mainly this part that is suffering.

Loads of other interesting stuff went on during the local dam's construction
and first few years of use. The most fascinating for me was the investigation
into the collapse of salmon breeding in the host river of the reservoir. It
took a long time to work out that salmon fry only start to eat (after relying
on their yolk sac from birth) when water temperatures reach a certain level.
At first, the water went past the reservoir dam by being extracted from the
base - this meant that it was too cold for the fry to start feeding and they
starved to death. Once this was realised, extraction was taken from a mix of
bottom and top valves, allowing the water temperature to be controlled to
approximate what it should be naturally. Problem solved.

And I am off to buy a lawn sprinkler.

Luckily, the extra-high temps only last a week or so but the average

We are lucky in this region regarding water, due to a huge investment in a
gigantic reservoir that turned out not to be necessary. During the 1976/7
drought the then head of the water company was asked about the possibility of
rationing and said
"If it stopped raining today and we simultaneously lost all the water in all of our

So the plants are still getting watered.

We have lots of flint though, so when climate change has dragged everyone back
to the Stone Age we’ll be laughing.

I have a (very dry*) allotment now and when I took it over about a month ago
the Lord of the allotment explained how it has a good loamy topsoil, then some
clay, then chalk all the way to Australia. They received a colossal water bill
last year because there was a huge mains leak that would have flooded anywhere
else, but just drained into the chalk without anyone noticing a problem.

*no hosepipes allowed even in normal weather, so if you’ve ever seen the film
Jean de Florette you’ll have an idea of what’s it like to keep it watered.

It's dry, so dry the power plants don't have enough cooling water due to
low water in the rivers. Next winter another horror scenario is planned due
to gas shortage. I'm lucky to have PV panels and inverter AC's installed

need a very very big tesla home battery but it's currently unobtainable and
Lithium is soon in short supply...
What's next? Very strange times...

It's much the same all over Western Europe. There are even bigger fires
in France again. We had one near Berlin in a forest where the local
authorities stock and destroy unexplosed ordnance and illegal fireworks,
making the work of the fire brigade even more difficult and dangerous.

For the first time in living memory, the source of the river Thames has
dried up, shipping on the Rhine is severely hampered and the river Po in
Northern Italy has been reduced to a rivulet, leaving the vast rice
fields in the area high and dry.

But, of course, all this has nothing to do with climate change...

I hope everyone across the pond is and stays safe. We live in such
difficult times.

Irix 11/4

2022-08-11 Thread Larry Colen
My new Irix 11/4 arrived today. I haven’t had a chance to do any serious
photography with it, but my one word review would be “fun”.

A bit more detailed would be:
The build quality is impressive. I did get the higher end (metal rather than
plastic) version. The focus ring is nice and smooth. Unlike my old Rokinon
8/3.5 this came with a hyperfocal guide. I had to calculate and make my own
for the Rokinon and that was critical for making the lens usable.

Note that this lens is manual focus. Wide open, hyperfocal gives you something
like 6 feet to infinity, I expect that most of the time I’ll just set a focus
range and not worry about focusing for specific shots.

This lens has a lot of nice little features:

It is weather sealed.

There is a detent at infinity focus. If you’re out photographing anything
beyond about 10 feet away, you could just leave it here not worry about it.

The focus guide is adjustable, If it’s not perfectly calibrated, you can remove
a cover, loosen a screw and set it properly.

It has a focus lock. As I said, most of the time I’ll probably use the
hyperfocal guide and set it for the distance range I’ll be shooting, depending
on amount of light, and size of room, i.e. will I be photographing dancers, or
out in the big blue room.

It will tell the camera, electronically, what the focal length is. It being
manual focus I was a bit startled when I powered on the camera and didn’t get
the screen to set the focal length.

The good news is that it does have a filter holder. The less wonderful news is
that it is for a gel filter on the back of the lens.

It does not have a manual aperture control ring.

It has an integral lens hood. The lens cap seems to be pretty nice and it
clicks into place.

Spending the money on it just because it was on sale may not have been the
wisest move fiscally, but I think it will prove to be one of the best mistakes
I’ve made in the past few weeks or months.

A few quick snaps to play with the angle of view:
My washing machine, my miata and my office. I’m a few feet in, so the section
of the office in view is probably about 8x8 feet.
