I own the Basic Grip from Sunpak. You can mount a shoe mount flash (in my case a 433 Sunpak), and the supplied synch cord will attach to the basic grip and the PC end will link with the camera. I use the grip with a Leica M camera. I can also use it with the LX, ES, ES II, and Spotmatic. Works

I got mine rather late in Pentax history. It is a heavy beast. And, like you said, the AF is very noisy. My first AF camera was the Canon EOS-RT, the one with a pellicle mirror. I think Canon did a much better job with their first AF cameras then Pentax. My favorite Pentax AF is the PZ1-p.
