It was added in editing - far too much in my humble opinion - as a sort
of 8mm-movie defect. Like adding scratches and turning footage BW
portraying it as old silent movie film.

Precisely John. There are filters that can be applied to shots or entire
sequences to emulate effects from days gone by (like occasional flashes,
which by the way is the supposed effect of opening the side of a camera
loaded with unprocessed movie film, thus allowing light to fall on one
edge of the reel, or maybe the parts that are spooled around the shutter
mech etc) and other filters to give the video any kind of look that you
like. I tend to do things manually and make my own effects but there are
plenty one can get off the shelf.

Thanks :)

One of the nice things I like about the X10 is the same thing I liked
about the Epson R-D1. You set it to B+W mode and you immediately think
in terms of monochrome - just like the days of wandering with HP5 in my
camera. And the camera does a really good job of rendering it in mono,
in my opinion. JUst before I stopped using film and got a Canon D60 (yes
a D60, not a 60D! - remember the D30? the next one up the road) I used
to shoot Ilford XP100 which was a C-41 bath if I recall correctly. That
film had amazing latitude. Now with digital and automatic bracketing
when needed, I can get very similar results.

I seriously can't see myself with a DSLR again in my lifetime.

Thanks for looking Dan. I burnt the sky in a bit but I didn't touch the
rock - although it looks like I've either burnt in the top half or
dodged the bottom half - I didn't! It's a straight in-camera mono
conversion. When I saw it I was reminded of St Ansel's northern
California beach work, although I don't for one second compare myself to
him - but the inspiration is there. Really appreciate your comments.

At the moment, just a wifi-bacpac with the remote. The iPhone app isn't
out til late August apparently, so remote viewing on the phone isn't an
option...just yet. Next accessory will be the proper dive housing, as
the waterproof housings are only really meant for splash and surf -
underwater images are affected by poor focus due to the existing
housing's lens. I need this as good pics underwater are crucial for me.

I already have a good selection of mounts and grips, mostly manfrotto.
Never know what it's going on next!

Re: OT: Fuji X10 sensor replacement saga

2012-07-24 Thread Steve Cottrell
Got my X10 back yesterday, with a new sensor installed. Tested it and no
white orbs! Interestingly it is my camera with a new sensor physically
installed, with paperwork to prove in case I ever sell it. I noted that
some US users were receiving new cameras in exchange instead of
actually having a new sensor placed in their existing unit, and these
were coming back to them with serial numbers starting '2nn' instead
of '1nn'. My serial number hasn't changed which i am delighted with.
It's my camera back again :)

Hopefully I will get time to post some pics soon. Busy week!

I agree.

When I reach a location to film in, one of the first things i do is snap
an iPhone pic and email it in to the web desk. They always want a still
to publish to the web asap. Very very rarely will they take a still from
the video. Only if nothing else is available.

But that's more through ineptness on their part rather than anything else!

>Even though we used video cameras rather than dslr's, we were taught to
>record the audio separately to ensure we got good quality sound. Once
>the sound was edited, the video was edited to fit the soundtrack.

When you say record the audio separately I presume you mean to use
microphones and an audio mixer, but what was the medium for recording
the sound?

In most video production the sound is recorded by a microphone(s) and
routed back to the camera using balanced audio and recorded at the same
time as the video, either on tape, optical media, or as is now becoming
more common, solid state.

The point is, DSLRs come with cheapshit 3.5mm unbalanced audio-in ports.
This is totally unsuitable for routing the sound back to the recording
media, especially at professional 48 khz level.

That's why proper video cameras have balanced XLR inputs to take audio
straight from a mic (mic-level) or via a portable mixer (line-level).

On broadcast and feature film drama the sound is often recorded totally
separately onto digital media, increasingly solid state. For most
broadcast applications this is overkill and overly expensive.

DSLRs are used more frequently now but have serious limitations re the
sound as mentioned above. They also can be awkward when used handheld
because they have to 'weight' to them. Smaller 'proper' video cameras
suffer this also, being fidgety and jittery in the hand. Of course, this
may be desirable and even sought after by the director, in which case it
becomes the perfect tool for the job.

Very few professional broadcast productions would use a DSLR as a main
camera, especially with dialogue being recorded, although there are
notable exceptions. More likely to be something like Sony's F-35 for
high budget and F-3 for more modest productions.

News and documentary is drifting away from DVCam and XDCam to solid
state in the form of XDCam EX - namely the PMW-500 hardware.

Video journalists carry PMW-EX1 cameras by the dozen.

That said, if the subject matter warrants it, they'll take footage from
an iPhone if they want and fuck the sound.

Just sayin ;)

M42 to K-mount adapter question

2012-09-11 Thread Steve Cottrell
Hi team,

Had a question from a mate - I don't know the answer but I told him I
knew a group of people who might ;-)

--

in your Pentax days, did you ever use an M42 to K-mount adapter?

...and if you did, did you have any problems with the adapter sticking
on the body or with infinity focus?

I've trawled the Pentax forums, most recommend the genuine Pentax
adapter which is expensive and hard to find - But, the genuine Pentax
adapter itself is by all accounts, not perfect...

Wondering whether to chance it with a cheapo alternative.

---

Any experience with this?

Re: Digital Lenses

2003-03-06 Thread Steve Cottrell
JPEGs are not fragile at all. they are misused by the novice. every
time you save a JPEF file from an image editing program, it
recompresses the image. since JPEG is a lossy compress algorithm, that
means each save throws away more of the image. i set my digital camera
to capture at the least possible JPEG compression and anything that i
decide worth working on gets converted to Photoshop format and stays
that way. anybody that needs my files gets them as Photoshop or JPEG
files created from the Photoshop original. i never alter the JPEG
files from the camera.
This is the most sensible piece of advice I have read here. This needs
reiterating: you can shoot in high quality jpeg mode, convert to a
native Photoshop file, and hey presto - print at 300 dpi, or save to
CD. As a rule, I save all my camera originals to CD. Every one. I go
through each batch straight from the camera and optimise the chosen 10%
or so and save them as ready Photoshop files. You can shoot RAW if you
like, but at 6MP you will be hard-pushed to notice a great big quality
increase. I have had a RAW file and a large/fine jpeg of the same scene
opened side-by-side, examining minute differences down to the
individual pixel, and there's so little in it that I always shoot jpeg.

Re: Anyone remember Christian Skofteland?

2014-07-03 Thread Steve Cottrell
Christian says hi. He was in London for a few days with work. I made him
get on a train to Oxford ;-)

Very warm in town today, and there was sights, and *sights* if you know
what I mean!!

He's fine and says hi to everyone.

Best lines of the evening:

CS - 'You watch Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad?'

Me - 'Nope but I'm about to build a model boat out of balsawood'

We were trying to figure out when we joined the list. He reckons he was
after me, and that was 2001. I only joined to ask about re-celling an LX
motor drive. Rob Studdy was kind enough to provide the answers. I should
have exited there and then instead of giving myself an extra 30 mins of
reading tasks a day for life

Love ya'll really ;-)
