Re: Camera Strap
Thanks for all the great replies. Actually not for me, rather for Stef. Bob W bequeathed him a Lumaloop strap some time ago, like this one: http://photo.it-enquirer.com/files/2011/06/lumaloop.jpg ...but the quick release mech - although undoubtedly strong - causes slight worry with the weight of an EOS-1DmIIn and 16-35/4 and sometimes even a 420EX flash - that's some weight! Situation resolved: the manfrotto QR plate (already part of his kit) screwed into the tripod mount on the baseplate also has a D-rind attached, so onto that clips a Lowepro Deluxe Shoulder Strap that I donated: http://slrhut.co.uk/content/products-accessories/8547_1.jpg http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y117/40zDictator/Camera-6.jpg Appreciate the input folks, thanks again. Aside: while researching, I came across what surely ranks as the most useless camera accessory of all time http://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0083/1012/files/dual-handle-with- glidestrap.jpg?1410 FFS! -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PESO - RIP Minnie 1992-2013
Sad cat news Our VERY old silver tabby, Minnie, passed away last night, peacefully and in no pain after an amazingly long life - seeing in both the berth of our son, Stefan, and his departure for university. Re: The Death of Photography (again)
On 15/12/13, Rob Studdert, discombobulated, unleashed: That's not strictly the definition here, over 50% of your invoiced income needs to be derived from photography alone to be deemed a pro. Over here, I'm not sure if there is actually a definition. I make my income from drawings and dividends from a company of which I am the managing director. The company's income is based largely on broadcast and corporate video production. From time to time one of my contacts will call and ask for still images (she's an agent) that she thinks will fit her clients' requests. I just sent off 104 small jpegs of the latest round of requests and she is putting them forward to see if any are wanted. Some taken on Canon 1D gear, plenty on the lil Fuji X10. It took me 6 hours to go through my li Probably 4 or 5 out of that 104 will be chosen, and the money is peanuts. I do it as a favour to her really and maintain the contact - she has provided video work in the past. If I had to make money solely from stills photography, I would be working twice as hard as I do now (and I work bloody hard I can tell you!) and be earning half as much. Certainly in stock images. Unless you're a stills snapper in particular demand or have a staff job, I cannot understand how a decent living can be made from stills! .02 Cot -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT: Mac purchase questions - followup report
Excellent choice Stan. I'm still happy with my used 2011 MBP 15 inch (matt screen) Unibody. I got it used in mint cond 4 months ago. 2.53 Ghz with 8GB ram, into which I installed a 250 GB SSD HD - it runs so fast and effortlessly. Definitely the best Mac I've ever had in terms of speed, build quality and general usability. I edit Sd and HD video on it regularly and it swallows everything up I can throw at it. Goes everywhere with me in a Marmot messenger bag with Lowepro deluxe padded strap. I'm a bit of portable computing geek - ever since I read a book called 'On The Road' by Michael Prochak back in the mid-1990s. ISBN 0-201-59396-1. If you want a trip down memory lane with a heady mix of Apple PowerBooks and Jack Kerouac, it's a must read! The only thing it hasn't won the Gold Star for from me is the keyboard - that accolade still rests with the best keyboard in a Mac portable that i have ever used: a PowerBook 1400 (still sitting in the attic, can't bear to part with it!) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__Broadcast, Corporate, || (O) |Web Video Production --www.seeingeye.tv _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I would say definitely go with the Canon - my son has the 17-40/4 he uses on the 1DmIIn and it is a lovely lens. By all accounts the 24-105 is no slouch either. That said, you want a 36X24 sensor so why not go for a full-frame beast? (the 60D is APS-C) There's plenty of choice As Tevye said, on the other hand If Pentax do pull a rabbit out of a hat and bring FF to the market, I would love one. Exactly how possible this is, is anyone's guess. The hat stays on the plate for now. I'm shooting with some Fuji hardware at the moment and loving it. I've got an X-E1 and a lil X-10 and will pick up an X100 or X100s in due course - just a matter of time. Re: OT Enablement
On 26/9/12, DagT, discombobulated, unleashed: We are going for a holiday and although they offered me a preproduction K-r I bought a Fujifilm x100 instead as a backup camera (I don¨t need another system camera). The x100 is really nice. Compact and light, sharp lens and it looks very similar to my first camera, Olympus 35RC from the 70s. Aperture ring around the lens, shutter speed dial on top and even a threaded hole in the shutter button for the old fashioned cable release. The most interesting part for me is the viewfinder. For those who don´t know the x100 view finder is a mixture where you can choose between the old type glass viewfinder with frame and some information, and an EVF. I find that I like the EVF a lot, even if it lags a bit on this camera. It is nice to see the effect of the exposure compensation in the viewfinder. I think the focus screens of the K-5 (and most other new cameras) is not very good with large aperture lenses as you neither are able to get an impression of the out of focus background nor the precise focus. I've briefly handled Bob W's X100 and it feels so good in the hands. I am seriously considering a black X100 to go with my X10 :) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: student cameras still film?
Something becoming more and more obvious to me is the effective 'dumbing down' of photography. In days gone by, there were basically three tiers of equipment. SLR cameras, bigger SLR cameras, and everything else. As a student, using an SLR camera was essential - you were taught about the nature of light and what happens inside that light-tight box you were using - how you could see and focus and frame the image in order to capture it. You learned about the relationships between time and aperture - absolutely crucial. You learned about the dynamics of using different lenses, and which lens to use, and when. Photography courses specified the requirement of a 'manual 35mm film SLR' as a pre-requisite. It seems today that some of the above elements are perhaps being taught from Powerpoint presentations to a class full of students toting anything from point and shoots upwards. Standardisation lacking. Worse, do the teachers even know what's going on inside the multitude of light- tight boxes full of electronics and vagueness? By all means move towards the electronic age - film was great for its time as a recording medium, but there are arguably better ways to do it now. But the nature of light never changes - and lessons of yesteryear can and should be transferred through to modern methods - but with the availability of a basic functioning DSLR thats name never changes. There are so many naming methods and they just don't sit still long enough for anyone to get a hold of what they are. Take a low-spec model, rip all the frills out of it, basic manual functions, simple menu system, manual focussing aids, threaded shutter release, K mount would be ideal (lots of manual focus lenses about) and call it the 'Pentax Student'. Price it below entry level and gear up to make as many as you can. Schools the world over would buy them by the ton. .02 -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Student Cameras Still Film?
On 28/9/12, David Parsons, discombobulated, unleashed: Modern cameras are computers with microswitches. The mirror and shutter assemblies are just about the only thing remaining that are mechanical. Using a threaded shutter release because old timers have a dozen each? What sense does it make to use an old mechanical shutter release that you need to interface with a circuit anyway? Remote shutter release is an electrical signal now (a short to be specific), it is arguably better since it requires no moving parts and is as simple as touching two wires to trigger. Because we need to teach students how to be photographers, not computer operators ;-) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__ || (O) | People, Places, Pastiche -- http://www.cottysnaps.com _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: OT GESO - Labour Day
On 1/10/12, Derby Chang, discombobulated, unleashed: I took the Avenon 21mm/2.8 out for a walk. Used to be one of my favourites, but since acquiring the formidable Zeiss 21mm/2.8, I've hardly touched the Avenon. It might be the weak coating, or it might be lashings of spherical aberration, this lens has a lot of glow, especially when shooting contre-jour. But it really gives it character. Matched with the equally-fun Epson R-D1s, the combo is a good reminder to me that I don't need to be on the technological bleeding edge. http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/12/10/labourday/index.html Really excellent gallery Derbs.
