Exactly. HDR software takes multiple images in 8-bit color (that is, 8
bits per color) and then combines them into an image in 32-bit color.
Since our software and monitors can't display anywhere near that kind
of color depth, the HDR software then maps the 32-bit color into 8-bit
(or 16-bit) space before rendering the final image. This is tone
mapping and it's an integral part of what HDR software does.

Rick, are your patients particularly susceptible because of immune
system weaknesses that go along with cancer treatments? I know
Covid-19 appears to be less dangerous to children (at this point
Children's Hospital is the only hospital in the Boston area that

PESO: On the canal again

2020-01-16 Thread Postmaster
A bit further along the canal this time:
https://www.robertstech.com/temp/7e400937a.jpg

Background: Yesterday (Wednesday) Lisa and I took a walk along the
Tennet & Avon Canal, from Bath to Bradford-on-Avon. It's around 12
miles from our hotel in Bath to the center of Bradford-on-Avon and all
pretty much dead flat because it's on the canal tow path. The weather
changed constantly from rain to cloudy to sunny and back. This photo
was obviously taken during one of the sunny spells. Because the walk
was so easy we finished in much less time that we'd planned for (we're
used to the arduous terrain of the Pennine Way, White Mountains, etc.)
so we had a pint at a pub in Bradford-on-Avon and explored the place a
little. It's a beautiful little town with lots on medieval
architecture and an old Saxon church. Well worth the trip.

Re: What are the advantages of ransomware Lightroom? Also copying off an external drive

2019-11-23 Thread Postmaster
Larry, I bought the last non-ransomware version of Lightroom and
didn't bother even installing until almost two years later! The
"dehaze" tool was a useful addition but other than that it didn't have
anything to recommend it over previous versions as far as I'm
concerned. I can't see any reason to upgrade further, myself.

If you really need better HDR and panorama tools you'll get better
results with specialized third-party applications and probably save
money, too. Photomatix Pro is the benchmark for HDR and it's only
$99.00 and worth twice that, at least.

There are several panorama apps that better Pholtoshop and Lightroom
for prices between $30 and $100.

Interesting Pentax KX listing on eBay

2019-11-20 Thread Postmaster
It's described as an "Excelent+++" Pentax KX... yet the listing states
the light meter doesn't work! Personally I'd say that justifies
removing the "+++". And the "excellent", too.

By the way, I've seen lots of examples of the Pentax KX, but ones in
which the light meter *does* work are exceedingly rare. I had a broken
one once and came to the conclusion that it was the 8-pin IC (probably
a dual op-amp) that had failed. It's a surface-mount DIP on a flexible
circuit board so I never bothered trying to identify it and source a
replacement because it just would have been too much of a pain in the
arse.

I think what the electric car industry needs to do is adopt the
"propane" business model: You don't generally get your propane tank
refilled, you exchange it for a filled one. Someday you should be able
to pull into a service station in your electric car and have your
almost-depleted battery exchanged for a fully charged one (batteries
would have to log the number of charge/discharge cycles they've been
through in order to vary the credit you get for the one you're
exchanging). This would of course require standardization of car
batteries and creation of a quick remove/replace architecture. A lot
of standardization and infrastructure hurdles to clear, to be sure,
but I don't see battery charging rates approaching the time it takes
to fill a 10-gallon gasoline tank any time soon.

That river is even more impressive than it looks in the photo because
half of it was behind me. I was perched on a rock in the middle of it
with a pack on my back and several thousand dollars worth of camera
gear in the pack and on the tripod perched before me (K-1 and my
favorite lens, the FA 20/2.8). Rock-hopping to the middle of the Ellis
River was quite the trick as I recall. Oh what we do for art. Anyway,
I quite like the resulting photo.

That's because 360 is exactly half of 720, the native mechanical
resolution of Epson printers (newer ones are double that at 1440) and
2:1 interpolation is simple.

I do my printing with Qimage software which uses its own resampling
algorithms to convert each image to the native resolution of your
printer at the print size you're making.

It's not a photograph of bands, is it?

No? All right then. My best guess is that Photoshop is having some
kind of disagreement with your printer driver. You should check that
you have the latest driver for your printer and also see if Adobe
issued any updates/patches for Photoshop CS6 that you haven't
installed.

If none of that works you could try re-sizing the image to the desired
print dimensions at 720ppi output resolution (the native hardware
resolution for Epsom printers).

If none of those tricks works you'll probably have to either buy a new
printer or print from an app other than Photoshop (which you're
already doing). Nothing wrong with printing from a different
application. I never print directly from Photoshop but use a
printing-specific application called Qimage (sadly, not available for
Mac AFAIK).

I can heartily recommend the Webster-Jackson Trail... as one to avoid.
We were just trying to get to the top of Mount Jackson (Lisa wants to
do all 48 of the over-4000-foot summits in NH) and this trail is the
worst either one of us has ever hiked. Continuously steep but also
wet, muddy, eroded and strewn with rocks and tree roots virtually
every step of the way. You have to continually watch every foot
placement to avoid injury. Miserable. Got a few good photos, though.

PSEO: From hiking in New Hampshire

2019-06-29 Thread Postmaster
Just returned from a few days hiking in the White Mountains. Spent
pretty much all the time there hiking, and on some damned tough trails
at that, so I didn't do as much photography as I'd liked. Got some of
the usual mountain streams and landscapes and such. Not bad but
nothing outstanding. Then I got this: A patch of Clinton's Lily
growing amongst some ferns. The buds of the lily were several inches
above the fern (and the leaves of the lily) so I stacked two images
focused at different points. I'm well pleased with the result:

No, noise wasn't an issue (shooting at ISO 100). It's just that the
strong sunlight coming through openings in the trees above created hot
spots that would otherwise have spoiled the shot. By combining 5
photos (each of which had hot spots in different locations due to
movement of sun and clouds) I was able to even out the exposure.

On Saturday morning we did the annual hike to Shanty Spring Branch to

meant we kept getting hot spots that threatened to ruin most photos. I
got around it by taking 5 shots (around 20 seconds exposure each) and
combining them using the "mean" function in Photoshop. Worked out
pretty well.

The way to work something like this is to avoid as much cloning as
possible: Copy and paste and use transforms to make the replacement

the clone tool. Then use the healing tools in places where they'll
work better than the clone stamp.

Why not? There are plenty of places in the world where barley and

have done for centuries). Sometimes it's other grains (like millet —
I'm told millet beer is served hot!) sometimes it's fruit (like

The whole thing feels very sturdy and compact, like it is part of the K-1.
It makes me wonder why Pentax doesn't fit one on.

No more loosening of the base plate. And I'm already getting used to the
switch from Manfrotto RC2 to Arca-Swiss system.

I've been unusually busy for a while (nothing bad) so I've been off
line more than usual and I've decided I can't do the Photo Annual this

Especially the money - I've been making up the major part of "the

I think the 10-year run was pretty damn good, though.

Qimage

2018-12-11 Thread Postmaster
I've been using Qimage, a printing utility, for years. Its resampling
system automatically resamples your image to your printer's native
resolution during printing (without altering the image file itself),
which really does seem to result in improved detail. It also does
non-destructive cropping and arrangement of multiple prints on a
single sheet of paper.

But today I discovered one of its best features. Have you ever run a
inkjet head test pattern and discovered you need to run a cleaning
cycle? And then cringed at the thought of how much expensive ink was
being used in the process? Yeah. Been there, done that. But I just
discovered can run its own cleaning cycle, independent of the print
driver and - get this - you can have it run the cycle ONLY for the ink
that's showing problems! BRILLIANT!

I would rhetorically ask why the printer manufacturers don't offer the
same option... but since they're the one's who sell ink I expect
everyone can work it out.

Only the LX had OTF metering for general exposure setting. ALmost all
later bodies had OTF *flash* metering. Early DSLRs had OTF (well, Off
The Sensor) flash metering but it was unreliable due to the
reflectivity of the sensor and subsequently dropped from the K10-D
onwards. (or maybe even with earlier models? I'm not sure because I
went directly from the ist-D to the K10D.)

About a year ago a couple of "bros" posted a YouTube video of them

going about the shoot. Then a local guy, fed up with the traffic jam,

The video spread like wildfire for a couple of days. Then someone

The KP is a thousand dollars and the K-1 is two grand. Given that a
camera in between tham would be around $1500 I'd guess it will be a
stripped-down full-frame rather than a up-spec APS-C.

So there will likely be ho higher-spec APS-C camera.
