I agree, Cotty. It would be such a huge announcement for dozens of
people that it makes sense to do it after the Photokina craze has died
down.

I present the new Leica M-E:

http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/09/17/Leica-M-E-18MP-stripped-down-full-frame-rangefinder

It's full-frame, has a completely stripped-down feature set, and has a
suitably insane pricetag.

Comes with something called Leica Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. I
wonder if that's stripped-down too? Only allows cropping, because
that's all a photographer should need, dammit.

Once again Leica provides the comic relief. I've been chuckling since
they announced this earlier in the afternoon (please don't ask why I
was waiting for it).

The M-E looks for all the World to be an M9. Maybe it's missing a few
things, but essentially that's what it is. So what Leica is saying to
all the people that bought the M9 is:

your camera is really f***ing underspec'd, but we didn't want to tell
you until now, when we're releasing an upgrade with more features
(that $500 cameras from other makers have had for years). Oh, and
we're going to now sell the M9 under a different name for $1,500 less
than you paid for yours. Thanks for being a loyal sucker.

I'd heard there was a shortage of brass in the market and now I see
where it went.

2012-09-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
The M-E's stripped down feature set is so similar to the M9 it might
as well be the same camera. So $5500 instead of $7000 ... it's a great
savings. I hardly use anything but those stripped down features
anyway.

That the new M, with weather sealing, new 24Mpixel sensor, RF and EVF,
1080p video, etc etc etc, is still the same $7000 that the M9 was is
nothing short of a bargain for this class of camera. Another year and
I'll be putting in my order .. my M9 is too new to off just yet. :-)

As for the version of Photoshop, it won't let you crop. Leica rangefinder

Newer stuff in the electronics world generally gets you more for less
money. That's the way it's been for 50 years at least, with each
successive generation of electronic equipment.

Happily, the new M looks to be exactly what I was hoping for, and the
price is no higher than what I paid for the M9. Bravo, Leica!

There's also the Leica M - a full-featured full-frame Leica (24
megapixels) for a bit more money.

They're the 5th and 6th full-frame cameras to be introduced in the
