No, I visited Kingston only once. I was based at the ex Folland plant in Hamble near Southampton. This was in the Hawker Siddeley days just prior to nationalisation and the establishment of British Aerospace, so 1969 to around 1978. I think the Hunter work, by then, was for a refurbishment programme, maybe for the Swiss airforce. Hamble didn't have an airfield so only made bits and pieces. Some of them were significant including most of the Harrier fuselage and Trident wings and tailplanes. There was also a sectioned off bit making chunks of Blue Streak missiles, but I'm probably not supposed to talk about that even now! Re: PESO: WH 17
Thanks, Chris. The canopy might have been spotless and optically perfect when it left the factory, but after a few months in actual use -- especially under combat conditions -- it got pretty dirty and scratched. The plane captain would wipe it down before each flight, but usually just ground the sand and dirt into the surface. It was always clear enough to complete the mission, however, but it could cause imperfections in any photo taken through the canopy. Re: PESO: WH 17
Thanks, Bob. I was in the wingman spot, as he is ahead of us and to the left. It is much harder to get a good shot from the lead plane, as it had to be "over-the-shoulder," and there are obstructions in the canopy in that direction.
