Re: PESO 2018 - 018 - GDG

2018-03-25 Thread Ken Waller
I first noticed fat tire bikes in Alaska as they were used in the snow because
of their floatation/traction in the snow.
Here in Michigan they're in their element on snow and sand, although I do see
them on paved roads.

Re: PESO 2018 - 018 - GDG

2018-03-25 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I'm sure I could cycle across France with it but at a different range of speeds
than I would on the Cinelli Criterium racer I once had. :-) Trade off the
knobby tires for smooth, roadie tires (like the Surly Black Floyd …
https://surlybikes.com/parts/tires/black_floyd) inflated to 25psi and it
becomes a very free rolling machine that takes less energy to move along than
it might appear.

It'll never challenge the narrow, high-pressure cycles for pure speed or light
weight. To me, the forte of these bikes are the handling dynamics (they glide
over the nastiest terrain, over gravel and sand, over snow, over railroad
tracks and dirt roads with comfort) and they feel more akin to a motorbike when
they turn. I can feel the tires working when I throw it into a corner—feels
just like with Racer. Love that sensation and the feedback of feeling exactly
how much grip I have to work with.

Depending on how the OEM gearing works out, I might push out the drive to an
even more extreme range … 11 speed shifter and derailleur with 11-46 cassette
and matching front ring rather than the 10-speed it has now … to make it more
capable for hilly country. Fun stuff! Can't wait for it to get here! Last I
looked at the tracking, it had left Arizona on its way here.

I'm going to do a bit more on diet manipulation: the gout and colitis issues
are well under control now, as is my blood pressure, so I have more leeway to
work with. What I need more now, according to my PT and doctors, is working
with a trainer for an exercise program at the gym on a regular basis. Weight
loss will come of its own with the exercise on the bike and modest trimming of
my diet; what I need to concentrate on most is good muscle development and core
strength. That's where being a desk pilot for so many years has really hurt me.

One of these days I'll even do some photography again. I hope. LOL! I really do
have some book ideas that I want to work on, but my priority for the past year
and some has been re-constructing and developing the machinery. My love of fine
art photography has been a secondary priority for a while.

onwards!

That's an amazing looking bike, especially the gearing, but I guess it's needed
to turn those huge wheels! I can imagine it's a lot of fun, but I wouldn't want
to cycle across France on it!

Controlling my diet is more effective than exercise for me when it comes to
weight loss (except when I'm cycling 6-7 hours a day across France, burning
zillions of additional calories). Losing weight helps to control gout, but
losing it too quickly, in combination with an increase in my gout medication,
has paradoxically triggered additional severe gout attacks... but that's
short-term pain for long-term gain, I hope; keeping it down, along with
maintaining fitness, of course has millions of other benefits, so it's worth
the pain.

I recognized that what you have there is an ebike and the Tour de France story

I read somewhere that a couple of bicyclist cheaters with electric assist using

discovered. Clever, but I think this demonstrates the total lack of
understanding in professional sports today that sporting competition depends
upon staying within the rules and honesty. Without that, it's all just bullshit

Really good to read about your progress in this thread and glad you're enjoying
the journey. I'm just back from a lovely ride on the Summit Rd in really nice
weather. I've only been riding once a week for longer than I care to think.
With the change in season I've recently swapped distance for intensity to
rebuild strength.

Thanks!

I had to muck around with my diet a lot up to a couple of years ago due to gout
and colitis issues. Nowadays, those issues are past and things are a lot more
stable … I stick with mostly gluten free, low carbs, modest veggies (I don't
digest veggies very well), and a reasonable distribution of meat, fish, and
poultry. Light on anything sugar, fruit and nuts in modest amounts, stay away
from garlic and onion and brocoli, etc. Amounts of all have been reduced by a
little. I have my occasional wee dram or short glass of wine, and drink a lot
of water.

That's a lovely machine, Bob! :-)

I'm fitting it with a pair of the Surly Black Floyd street tires (same ones
I've been using on the Sumo fat ebike). It's a year behind the 2018 on
equipment, so I might do an upgrade to the brakes and drive system as well;

That's great to read, fantastic progress and it shows in the picture. Have you
changed your diet at all? Because of gout I have given up practically
everything, including free sugar, fruit juice and dried fruit, which is
difficult in this day and age, not because I like the stuff, but because sugar
is everywhere and often quite hidden. But giving it up makes a huge difference
to weight gain/loss and has all sorts of other health benefits, at least partly
because it forces you to eat unprocessed food.

I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of the new bike. Here's one I built up

I feel so good these days it's amazing: I haven't felt this healthy for over a

Another important day on the road ... I've gone 1400 miles on Sumo
today. I asked the one of the men working at the bicycle shop if they
would take a picture of me and the bike.

Re: PESO 2018 - 018 - GDG

2018-03-24 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thanks! :-)

I've been working hard at it—trying to get out every day that the weather makes
it feasible for at least ten miles of riding. And I'm throttling down the power
further and further: Yesterday's ride was 17 miles with the power OFF all the
way but for one underpass (where the traffic was a bit dense) and one overpass
(where I got a little lazy and switched on ECON mode about 50 feet from the
crest of the hill).

I feel so good these days it's amazing: I haven't felt this healthy for over a
decade. :-) The niggly little miseries that have crept into my life over the
long years are being smashed flat… There are obviously some things that even
this kind of exercise, etc, can't eliminate—I'll never be thirty again—but I
simply refuse to allow incapacity due to neglect and foolishness overcome me
anymore.

Sumo's likely replacement is on the way here now. I originally bought an
electric assist bicycle because I didn't have the strength left in my legs and
core body to ride enough to get some exercise, to not be a danger to myself and
an obstruction on the road. When I brought this bike home, I could barely go
three miles even with the power on without becoming exhausted and needing a
couple of days rest. I could hardly get on and off the bike even. That first
ride home meant I stayed in a chair for three days with every muscle in pain.

Now I can ride the 56 lbs beast for seventeen miles and only get barely sweaty,
change clothes and hop on the motorcycle to finish some errands and enjoy a
little blitz through the twisties. I've lost about 50 some odd pounds on the
scale and, according to my doctor, gained about 15 lbs of muscle mass in my
legs and core body. The trousers I bought the other day, replacing the ones I
bought last July, are four sizes smaller. I feel like the me that I ought to be
again.

So the new bike is coming: a beautiful little fat bike set up for the road just
the way I like, pedal power only, in CF and alloy that weighs in at 26 lbs. I
am so excited about it! So light and so much fun to ride, can't wait for it to
arrive!

onwards!

Not surprising with all that crappy weather you've been having.

Re: PESO 2018 - 018 - GDG

2018-03-24 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Not that I understand what that has to do with my riding a fat ebike, John, but
thanks for the comment.

I read somewhere that a couple of bicyclist cheaters with electric assist using
a drive motor and battery setup plumbed into the chain stays had been
discovered. Clever, but I think this demonstrates the total lack of
understanding in professional sports today that sporting competition depends
upon staying within the rules and honesty. Without that, it's all just bullshit
and money. If you're going to cheat, cheat *within* the rules. That I'd
consider clever rather than dishonest…

Heard on the news the other day that the Tour de France organizers are now
inspecting bicycles for hidden electric motors.
