Probably a good move.

No, I didn't Ann. I was actually just entering the area when he came up
out of the road side underbrush and flew along rather slowly
paralleling the roadway. He didn't go very far before stopping to rest
in a low tree limb no more than 40 t0 50 yds from my rig. I already had

I agree, Brian. I haven't cropped the full size file yet, only the down
sized web version. 420x520/339KB.
I'll crop the full size file and burn it to disk today.
Shot in RAW w/K10D, 200 ISO, f/6.7, spot metered & hand held.

Thats a good shot Jack. The small limbs don't interfer at all, and the
bird is nice a crisp.
I think I'll start looking for an 80-320

I've wasted some bandwidth by doing what I always thought was a good
idea -- commenting before reading those of others.
So I opened your post first... then saw the virtual dittos re the
cropping :)
I do think this crop is better .

Yes, I think the vertical crop is better balanced. How big an image were you
left with after the crop?
I find the 80-320 a real workhorse lens. Seems to perform much better than
would be expected for a fairly low-spec lens.

Yeah, it is sorta gaggy.(UGH) Such things do look better in the
Safeway meat case all wrapped in poly with a Foster Farms sticker, huh?

I've been pleased with the 320 setting on this lens, but didn't recall.
I checked the EXIF date and find that it was taken at 320.
As I indicated, the posted image is, also, a heavy crop,
Maybe even Fruit Loops?

Very nice, Jack, though I think I'll stick with my
Cheerios for breakfast!
Did you use the 80-320 at 320? People often dump on
its performance past 250 or so, but I've generally
found it okay.

Thanks, Paul. You're right, I did consider a tighter crop, mainly to
get rid of those fuzzy limbs close in on the left, but this is already
a very heavy crop and small file.
Ken suggested the same thing, so I'm providing the link to a tighter
crop. It's a vertical to include that 'wing' hanging dow
Good one. A somewhat tighter crop would be nice, but I suspect you're pushing
things in that regard. Nice work.

Went to the local State Wildlife Area, again, this AM. Brilliant day
and a nice break from recent, but much needed, rains.
A pro friend has gotten me into hawks at this point.
Am linking a crop from the middle of a shot of a Red-shouldered hawk
taken with my trusty FA 80~320. It's serving me well
