Dear Masoud, Apparently the first question is: Where the data has come from? AFAICS it is the poor Arianpour Dictionary's data. I hereby ask you to remove all GPL related notices and stuff from your work, for a couple of important reasons: * You are distributing a large amount of COPYRIGHTED data without permission to do that (or you have not stated your permission). * GNU GPL requires you to distribute the source code, but you are releasing the data in .sqlite format which by definition is not the source. (If you have ever read the GPL, it defines: The source code for a work means the preferred form of the work for making modifications to it, and this is not the case for what you are releasing) Actually unless you resolve the first problem, you are stealing copyrighted data. After that, you can think about the second problem. Very sad that GPL has become a luxury for some people. Re: [PersianComputing] [offtopic] Arax 0.1 released under GPL
In the mean while, Masoud contacted me off the list, saying that he has removed GPL, because of the first reason below. BTW, about the second one, he told me that it is actually the source he has. Thanks Masoud. A Happier Now Behdad ;) On Tue, 28 Oct 2003, Behdad Esfahbod wrote: Dear Masoud, Apparently the first question is: Where the data has come from? Re: [PersianComputing] [offtopic] Arax 0.1 released under GPL
Behdad, How hard is it to contact the copyright holder to release their data and/or put it under GPL? I believe that I have seen this dictionary data set in 5 different dictionaries (and all claimed that are based on Mr. ArianPour's). Not that copying copyrighted material without permission becomes legal after 5 (or whatever) times, but it'd be nice to add this to a set of GPL software usable by an average 'Akbar agha, Persian Linux user'. cheers, Masoud A. Re: [PersianComputing] [offtopic] Arax 0.1 released under GPL
The copyright holder is trying to make a business out of that. I have seen their CDs in Enghelab for a range of 5 to 15 thousand Tomans I guess (those with or without translator), and it's not easy to persuade a complany (whatever personal it want to be) to release their main work free of charge. If you are going to give it a try, I recommend you try on Farhang Moaser publications, to release their Bateni English-Persian dictionary, which is far better than Aryanpour in action. behdad On Tue, 28 Oct 2003, masouds wrote: Behdad, How hard is it to contact the copyright holder to release their data and/or put it under GPL?
