It's actually a very convenient thing, helping to reduce the awkwardness of the little flip lever and likely preventing stylus damage from missing the edge of the record. I think they came out around the same time as the LP system, where protecting the fine LP stylus was even more crucial.

I concur that the button makes it easier, especially on a nice, well-lubricated machine where it's easy to go too far and then swinging all that mass back over to the right (without going too far again), prior to setting the diamond down on the disc. I don't speed through, but it's a lot of
