[Phono-L] Trying to warn an unsuspecting Ebay bidder

2007-02-18 Thread Steven Medved
This has happened to me, if the person you are trying to contact is selling
something you can contact them that way, or try to contact him again this seems
almost random.

Hello all,
If anyone is interested, I just looked at a Victor RE-57
Radio-Phonograph-Recorder with a good looking case, all the hardware.
Apparently complete! The
person at the antique store did not know anything about it as it belongs to
his partner who was not there. It is priced at $500.
It is located at the McMillen Antique Store at McMillen, WA near Sumner
and Orting which are both near Tacoma.

Hi Listers,

I've been doing a little investigating into HMV gramophones that came out of
Spain and that were produced at the HMV factory in Barcelona. They actually had
some quite destinctive models made to suit a somewhat more adventurous taste at
the time. I have found very little information in reagards to the range of
machines that might have come out of there. Is there anyone on the list that
might be able to help with information on some of the models that might have
been available? Anyone have a catalogue of spanish machines? I've seen machines
advertised on record covers but that is about it. Any information would be most
appreciated!

Mario

[Phono-L] shipping phonographs

2007-02-18 Thread michael funk
When I was getting info on Fed Ex last summer the very fine print on the
agreement said antiques would only be reimbursed up to $100.00. But I could
not find out what they defined as an antique ( was it something a hundred
years old? There seemed to be no definition to refer to )- when I asked if a
phonograph would be insurable I was told yes but then was told not if it is
an antique. If you don't ask any questions they will let you pay extra
insurance on any item - but it doesn't mean that they will actually pay up
on the claim.

This is from the latest, greatest, up to date FedEx ground tariff.. It is
not hard to find. As i have
said before, if has a value and you care about it then ship it REGISTERED mail.
 If your buyer can not
afford the registered mail then find another buyer. FedEx ground including
home delivery will not
cover the items listed. You can buy insurance from outside agencies, bring
steel engravings of Ben
franklin, several.

Declared Value and Limits of Liability (Not Insurance
Coverage)
A. FedEx Ground liability with regard to any package is limited to the sum of
$100 unless
a higher value is declared at time of tender and a greater charge paid as
provided in the
FedEx Service Guide or FedEx Retail Counter Rates Book.
B. The declared value of any package represents our maximum liability in
connection
with a package, including, but not limited to, any loss, damage, delay,
misdelivery,
nondelivery, misinformation, any failure to provide information, or misdelivery
of information.
Exposure to and risk of any loss in excess of the declared value is either
assumed by
the shipper or transferred by the shipper to an insurance carrier through the
purchase of
an insurance policy. The shipper should contact an insurance agent or broker if
insurance
coverage is desired. FEDEX GROUND DOES NOT PROVIDE INSURANCE COVERAGE OF
ANY KIND.
C. In cases where the shipper declares or agrees in writing that the property
being
shipped is released to a value exceeding $100 per package or article no

[Phono-L] Trying to warn an unsuspecting Ebay bidder

2007-02-18 Thread john robles
I have tried that with the same results. I have also tried to contact someone I
did business with recently with the same message, so I had to go into one of
their current auctions to get hold of them.
When there is an incomplete or fraudulent item I usually contact the seller,
if I feel it is a real threat to the buyer. Usually they say they didn;t know,
will take it off ebay or relist with new info, and lots of times they do. Once
in a while though I get an angry response, which tells me they know they are
selling fraudulently. Then I report them to ebay. I don't do this very often,
as it really is a buyer beware system and I can't save the world, but it
actually physically gets me to think someone is buying in confidence when they
are going to get ripped off. I don't do it with the repro gramos anymore,
because there are too many on ebay.

got a reply saying in effect that ebay SOMETIMES
blocks emails when you have not done business with a

This is that ebay message I got:

*

If you are a seller, respond to all bidder
questions before the auction ends.

*

If you are trying to contact the seller of an
item that has not yet ended go to the item page and
click the ?Ask seller a question? link.

*

If you are the winning buyer of an item go to
your My eBay page under the items I?ve Won section.
Click the action drop down menu and choose the
?contact seller? action.

*

If you are a seller trying to contact your
wining buyer, go to My eBay and under the Items I?ve

the ?contact buyer? action.

*

Reply to seller/bidder through personal email
provider (if the sender has not hidden their email
address).

Thank you for your understanding."

(end ebay blurb)

So now ebay will not even let you contact someone else
to warn them about problems I realize they are
probably doing this to prevent people from writing
others saying they have the same item for sale, only
cheaper.

I tried this about a month ago, so this is not new.
Has anyone else had this problem and if so, is there
some other way to contact a member?

It appears that we (unsuspecting ebay buyers) are now
even MORE trouble, and it is REALLY "buyer beware"
with no help from the honest ebay community.

[Phono-L] shipping phonographs

2007-02-18 Thread Rich
You are running into the problem of the "local company employee staffed
customer service counter",
and "the local contract shipping center". This will happen with almost
anything except the post office.
Make a phone call to the home service center and ask or, better yet, go on the
internet and read the
carriers tariff and regulations. You will find the answer there. Armed with
the page and paragraph
number you can now go to the "customer service" counter.

You will have a tough time collecting from the post office for an antique also.
 Again, if it has value,
then ship it REGISTERED mail.

Right now all you have heer is FUD from your friend of a friend who said.

[Phono-L] shipping phonographs

2007-02-18 Thread Robert Vuillemenot
Hi,
I used to ship a lot of antiques by FedEx ground. I found the
service was almost as fast as Priority Mail and considerably cheaper.
In Jan 2006 I took a very expensive phonograph to FedEx to ship to
Arizona by ground. To my surprise the clerk told me that the insurance
policy on antiques had been changed. As of Jan 1st the max insurance
available on antiques shipped FedEx ground was $100. Needles to say I
couldn't accept this on a $3500 item so I shipped it Priority Mail. The
other day a friend of mine received an expensive phonograph that was
shipped from the west coast by FedEx ground and was insured for several
thousand dollars. Furthermore the seller didn't even have to give proof
of value to obtain the insurance. I know this because he tried to ship
it at UPS first but they wouldn't insure it without a recent appraisal
by a qualified antique dealer. Does anyone know if FedEx has changed
their insurance policy? If so what is it now.
Thanks.
