[Phono-L] Edison Bearing
I want to thank everyone who expressed interest in the Edison bearing. I've received enough request that will keep me busy for several weeks. So I'm sorry I can't make the offer free anymore. One question is why make one in the first place? A collector once said to me years ago; one of the problems with an Edison motor is that there is steel on steel friction with only the oil you can externally place on it. That in itself initiated the wheels spinning. I wondered if I could improve it. This bearing provides a continuous feed of oil to the bearing and reduce the constant need to oil it externally. Maybe it's crazy and won't make a difference. But I'm sending it out to several individuals to test it and see if it is an improvement. Or maybe it's because I'm too lazy to oil the motor as required! In 1963, I received my fathers Brunswick he played as a child. I was thrilled with it and began my enthusiasm for collecting, He would take me all over the city as I scoured for any old unit. In 1964, he paid $60 for my first Edison Standard (of which he only made $75 a week). I was stunned that he would make such a sacrifice for me. What is interesting is that he worked for Alcoa Aluminum. He was an avid inventor and came up with several improvements for the machines he operated. He was even recognized for several awards (unfortunately nothing financially). He passed away in 2011 at the age of 91 He was my best friend, hero and my inspiration. And we both admired Edison! Maybe a long explanation of why, but there it is. Best Regards Randy Larson ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
Re: [Phono-L] Edison Bearing
Ronald Thanks so much for your input, I really appreciate it. The only reason I used stainless steel is that it would last longer. The oil in the bearing would sustain it.Bronze is such a soft metal but did not know about it's absorbency. That may possibly reduce any wear on the metal. I will try the bronze. Thanks! Also, any suggestions on what oil has worked best for you? I am going to try some teflon based oil, but they are harder to come by where I live. I do have an order for some and hope it will be here in a couple of weeks. That was awesome Ken! Loved it! On Jan 27, 2013 12:29 PM, Ken and Brenda Brekke kb...@charter.net wrote: Every once in a while, a little bit of historical trivia comes to light. Did you know The Goldberg Brothers - The Inventors of the Automobile Air Conditioner. Here's a little factoid for automotive buffs or just to dazzle your friends. The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Maxwell, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into old man Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. The old man got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted the recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now old man Ford was more than just a little anti - Semitic, and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners show -- Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max -- on the controls. ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org
[Phono-L] Edison bearings
Not sure if many would like this, but I've been trying to come up with an idea of how to improve the Edison Standard bearings. Specifically being the bearings for the governor. I wanted to develop something that would still look original yet performed better. Last week I finally thought of something (if it hasn't been already) and put one together (after many trial and error attempts). It's a female bearing with a stainless steel sleeve in a hollow brass case. I tried a steel case but couldn't drill through it. The case has an oil feed at the top right or left end (depending which side it's made for). The bearing provides a longer oil feed and better lubrication. After testing it on my Standard motor, it is working great. It has the original look (except for the oil feed hole and the brass)and works better and you don't have to oil the motor as often. If your interested in one, let me know. I'll send a few out for free for testing /feedback. Thanks Randy Larson ___ Phono-L mailing list http://phono-l.org

When yuo get them and you send the item off, you find out that the money order or cashier's check is no good and you are stuck. So the seller was probably afraid that this was one of those scams. They are so widespread on Craigslist that I get several offers when I am selling something there. They always begin with a note from the would-be buyer asking if the item is still available. They never state what the item is - like they don;t say Is the phonograph still available? When you answer and say yes, you get another email, usually from a different person, stating Thakn you for your swift reply. I am busy and so cannot come to pick up the ite,m, but will pay you (soe additional sum of money) for your trouble. I will send payment by certified bank check (or money order) and upon receipt I will arrange for my shipper to pick up th item. That is usually how it goes. When anyone asks me it the item is still available, I say yes, but not if you want to pay by certified check or money order. Then I usually don't hear back, or more often I hear Thank you for your response. I will send payment blah blah blah. It's like they never read my response. As my heart began to pound, I couldn't believe I was the first, and those who snooze loose motto popped in my head. I checked out the photo's and the unit was in mint condition. I immediately purchased it which began a roller coaster of emotions. The other motto of if its too good to be true, it usually it also reared it truth of reality. I checked his ebay and history and there was none. A tracking number was given and DPD (out of Germany) had no record of this number. The person was also from Lithuania! The phone number given was also bogus. I sent four emails asking for verification and to no avail, no response! The good news was that I alerted paypal. They said that they agreed that this most likely was a fraudulent sale, and I would be guaranteed that I would receive a full refund. We have to wait, there's a 1% chance he might still send it, but paypal has to wait 30 days (time limit for the seller to send the package). I'm also asking for help on stripe-ing, not stripping, I've tried pin strips from cars (too wide), tried hand painting with masking tape (paint bleeds under masking tape, looks bad) and free hand (worse yet, too many cups of coffee). Ron Sitco mentioned a roller device, checked that out, it starts at $100.00 (too much for the budget at the moment.. but will check it out if anyone else has tried it and it worked. Thanks. Be advised that the black bedplates are coated with asphaltum -- not paint. Colored bedplates are coated with tinted shellac -- not paint. You will be amazed at the casting defects in the bedplates. Just got in a lowly model B Standard, that's a good machine with a nice cabinet, nickel parts and combination attachment, but some blankety-blank polished all the stripes and umbrella signature off of it.
