Re: [Phono-L] Amberola Spring Re-greasing question
50 and 75 springs are easy, which is worth more your time or your money? Triumph springs are a bit of a challenge. There are three tabs, do not touch the third tab. Open up the other two less than half way. You can remove the first tab that frees up the second two that are much easier to remove. You might have to pry up on the lid to get the first one. When you put them back they will stay. If you open all three up all the way they will break off when you try to bend them back. You can tell how good the springs are by how far they open up when you remove them from the barrel. Use mineral spirits to clean them, gasoline will make them harder to clean. Mineral spirits, kerosene, Jet fuel, and heating oil all work well. Re: [Phono-L] Amberola Spring Re-greasing question
Hi John ~ I've just read your question and Rich's answer. I agree, you should bend just sufficient to release -- no need to bend them perfectly straight up, etc. Also, you may find that you can get away with leaving some leaning in quite a bit (very minimal bending). As long as you can tilt one end out, that may be all you need to liberate the other. It's better to err on the side of not bending enough. You can always bend a little more, incrementally. Regarding sending them out, I had an unpleasant experience with one of the major antique phonograph suppliers, who sell parts and do mainspring and other servicing. It took a very long time to get my spring barrels back (a 2-spring Brunswick setup with a nice, machined nickel-plated spacer between the barrels), and when it finally did come back the spacer was gone and in its place was a stack of mismatched washers! I wanted to save myself an unpleasant job and to this day I've never sent another out. I just take care of it myself. Re: [Phono-L] Amberola Spring Re-greasing question
Hi John: Slowly wind the spring and watch the barrel. You should see a approx. dime sized threaded projection with a flat headed screwdriver slot on the barrel part facing you.Wind the spring fully and so you can see the opening and inject about a teaspoon of grease/oil mixture. Replace the screw and wind the motor up and let wind down 2-3 times. It should thin the previously applied grease and quiet it down. Try 1 teaspoon#x27;s worth the first time don#x27;t be tempted to use too much or it could come out. Place paper towels underneath for several days in case it drips.
