Just to make good on my volunteering, I guess I'll be needing a CVS

17. Examples
The examples in the manual should be more consistent and useful. A
draft styleguide alredy exists under
phpdoc/RFC/coding_standards. Additional ideas that came up were syntax
highlighting and linking functions in examples to their manual pages,
which need either post-processing of the HTML output or the ext/xslt
changes already discussed.

We also talked about having a similar feature as the old pre-Windows
Borland IDEs where it was possible to copy working examples to the
clipboard with a special single keystroke. Possible ways to implement
this for plain HTML and for CHM have to be examined ...

Having an example index and additional code-only pages for examples
might be an alternative to this.

Happy new Year!

Are more useful examples needed? Yes. Can the manual be

Do people who post to the lists currently read the manual?

**first wants to point out it's easier to put a reply ABOVE the quoted

I have to admit I think you're right in a lot of points philip, he
should indeed be allowed to help with the phpdocs. Though, the results
of him adding more examples would result IMHO in the following 2 things:

1 - Inexperienced ppl would be overwhelemed by the amount of examples,
and compex ways to 'use' something. Thus making their scripts more
complex than they need to be, and finally resulting back here in the
lists asking for help.
2 - Most (more) experienced ppl would benefit a bit from the examples by
seeing how you 'could do it', but then again, more ppl would start
coding 'the same way', by that I mean to say that there are more ways to
code something There *ALWAYS* are more ways.

These things might seem a bit far off, but they are true IMHO.
Nevertheless, I would appreciate more documentation examples, and it
sure is something I will be adding in the next few days off I have ;)

Just to clarify this. Michael needs a PEAR Account, since ext/imagick is
in PEAR/PECL. And if possible, give him peardoc access as well, maybe
he's a better docwriter than me :)

The point being that this is what the LGPL is for; since the GPL is
far more "viral" than LGPL. I'd suggest having a look at
http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html for answers to any questions
you may have about the GPL.

We looked into embedding a GPLed template-engine in one of our
projects and concluded that it would be impractical concering the
requirements of the GPL, since this would require us to publish our
project under the GPL too (at least the way we interpreted the
license).

Re: [PHP-DEV] CVS account request

2002-11-08 Thread Wez Furlong
Hello Sergey,

PHP 4.3 will/does have SSL and TLS support integrated into the fopen
and fsockopen functions. (see the online manual:
http://php.net/fopen and http://php.net/fsockopen).

The current implementation requires that the openssl extension
is built-in to php (rather than shared), and does not allow for
using certificates (as your patch does).

I'm not so keen on the way that you get the fd from the sockets
extension, and would prefer to see those features integrated into
PHP more fully, so...

If you could read through the online docs for streams, take a look
in main/network.c and main/streams.c and come up with an alternative
patch that is integrated into the new streams API, I will review it
and then most likely commit it. Feel free to ask me questions on
streams (as a hint, the certificate stuff should probably use the
stream_set_option API).

Please also read the README.SUBMITTING-PATCH file before posting
your next patch.

Thanks for your efforts!

2002-11-05 Thread Chris Shiflett
Out of curiosity - why is this?

I assume it is because such an extension would somehow be required to be
covered under the GPL as well, but I don't understand that. Shouldn't it
be possible for the PHP extension's code to be licensed any license and
simply use a GPL library? The extension's code would be copyrighted by
the author, correct? So, why can't the author decide what terms his/her
code is licensed under?

Just curious - I've heard this before and have never understood.

there's an anonymous cvs account so you can get your local

you only need an cvs account if you want to do editing, not for
studying the php core code. for studying i'd suggest using the
web site cvs.php.net or the anonymous cvs account

You dont need a CVS account to develop a PHP application... all you need
is some webspace that is PHP enabled (ask you webspace provider / ISP).
If on the other hand you're developing PHP's internal modules (eg: wanting
to extend / bug fix PHP itself), or update the documentation etc. then
your request is valid.
A list of hosts that provide PHP enabled webspace can be found on
http://www.php.net/
Thanks for your interest in PHP and I wish you all the best with your PHP
based application development.

Re: [PHP-DEV] CVS Account Request: peter

2002-05-01 Thread Markus Fischer

Hi,

I've documented the major functions now for ext/sockets, but
there's still a bunch to do. I'm not going to do more
documentation on sockets anytime soon as my spare time is
too limited. Feel free to enhance the existing documentation
and/or add the new ones.

- Markus

ps: btw, I didn't paid much attention to what the API was <
4.3 as this extension is still marked experimental so it's
simply not necessary and I suggest going for CVS HEAD too so
we have a stable sockets with 4.3 and the documentation too.

Re: [PHP-DEV] CVS Account Request: peter

2002-04-20 Thread Peter

Hello Marcus,
PHP functions regularly change from the old system of returning a negative value to
using false. The PHP
documentation for sockets show all the sockets functions using a negative number. In
4.1.12 there are at least two
functions changed to return false for an error. I could update those pages now as I
worked on sockets with 4.1.2 today.

I might test the same code with RC4 on Sunday. Either way, some pages would be updated
and gain examples.

Yes, but Peter, we should coordinate. Actually I had in mind
to update all the functions (including examples) to their
current (CVS HEAD) state this weekend (read: today, tomorrow

Based on 4.1.2 ? Updating the docs then would not be a good

Anybody knows how long does it take to get a CVS account? I have submitted
my
original request almost a week ago.

It is possible to access SQLAnywhere via the unified ODBC driver, but the
problem
is that when Apache does a fork() it duplicates all open file handles
including sockets, and we
end up with two different processes trying to write to the same socket or
same shared memory
file hence, this confuses the ASA server and ends up disconnecting clients.

With this new module, we avoid this problem by controlling when the
init/fini is done in the module.
In addition, setting up the ODBC with asa involves setting environment
variables
and using a driver manager which is not standard on UNIX and prune to
errors and build problems to
users. This new modules simplifies all that in that it links with the dblib
library (the other native interface
of SQL Any).

In addition, with the existence of this module, we can add features that
are specific to ASA such as improved
blob handling which exists in newer releases (8) of ASA.

Don't know about the sybase openclient, but if ODBC can be
circumvented with a native approach, IMHO, that would be
a good thing.

CVS account access is not necessary to submit events - simply to approve them, so you

I don't know licensing issues, but we could but the imlib2
itself into the repos too (other extensions do it also). It's
just a tradeoff whether the ext. changes often or not (but it
doesn't look that way so it might be a good idea).

Sure, Matt is the author and he is always on #php on irc.openprojects.net
under the handle of Cardinal. You can talk with him in there.

However, Imlib will take a while (if ever) to be a replacement for GD for
reasons that Matt himself told me, as the requirement of some silly
threading library and Xlib (X11 support). He told me that a patch for
losing the requirement of Xlib was sent to rasterman but he never added it
to the distribution (correct me if I'm wrong).
