Well of course but that's because I wasn't using IE so my point is that
I don't think it matters (that I got over 2083). I would be willing to
say that 3/4 of all internet users are on IE still so tweaking server
settings and testing with browsers other than IE is useless. Unless of
course you know exactly your audience's setup (for example in a
corporate setting where you know your client's setup) in which case this
could possibly be worthwile. But then again if someone is passing long
strings like that they should rethink their implementation anyway... so
back to square one.

Yes, I mentioned that in my original post...but read
that carefully, it says "IE's limit",not everyone uses
IE and if you continue sifting through googles results
you will see that it also mentions some servers
settings may allow more or less. Infact, your test
itself proves that it was worth it coz you took it way
up more than the 2083 limit that you found :-)

I am on a windows machine running apache 1.3, no
problems, I wanted to know if anybody else had a
problem running it on their servers (differnet
platforms, different browsers etc).

HTTP servers are required to support at least X bytes.

X changed from HTTP spec to spec.

In all specs, servers were encouraged to support "as many characters
as is practical"

Note that part of this stems from the fact that there are many
embedded HTTP servers with very specific minimalist goals.

EG the HTTP server in one of them little D-Link hub thingies has to be
pretty small, right?

But they want to be compliant with the spec, right?

Or, at least, non-compliance should not be over something as trivial
as the dang URL being "too long"

At any rate, other than being more than the minimum, it's entirely up
to your HTTP application how long is "max length"

Here's the thing though:  Do you really want a 4000-char URL?

That's probably not a Good Idea for a lot of different reasons -- some
of which may not apply to domain-specific applications, but...

MOST people asking this question are e, not newbies, but
journeymen web application developers, who are going to soon realize
that there are better ways to manage client/server I/O than cramming
4000 characters into a URL. :-) :-) :-)

If I want a name, I will discard anything other than text for instance.
Send an error message to the user and get them to refill the input box.

If I want a name, I will discard anything other than text for instance.
Send an error message to the user and get them to refill the input box.

Thanks for the reply. So what do you do if someone enters illegal characters in one of your form? Do you inform the user and prompt them to enter the fields again or do you just strip out all the bad 
characters and enter the rest of the info into the database?


Im concerned with what to do once a user has added the bad characters. I will 
be using a regular expression.

i think you can lessen this effort by improving your qualitymanagement
during the planing and development phase of your projects (means making
a lot of UML diagrams and so on...).
You may try to let the application handle its missbehavours by itself.

If you don't want anyone to get your source-code it's a question of
server security...

or:

Not sure what kind of help you're looking for but if you just want to
suppress errors, try this instead:

  $fp = @fsockopen("xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", 80, $errno, $errstr, 30);

Or, adjust error_reporting level: http://www.php.net/error-reporting

use wget to test it out. You might not have that option but I have seen
others use fopen or file_get_contents.

Hi doug,

try something like the function given here
http://shiflett.org/dev/php_post.phps and check the returned headers .. 
there will be a field which will contain the status code (200 for 
successful / 404 for page not found etc).

I'm assuming the zipinfo your talking about is part of the unzip
package. You should use unzip to test the files

unzip -t file.zip

will check the checksum for each file.

'man unzip' for further details.

Well if zipinfo returns anything at all it's probably valid. If it
doesn't then it's probably not since it can't read the file properly.

But then again I've never heard of the "zipinfo utility" so I could be
totally wrong.

You can use function_exists() and class_exists() o test against needed
implementations. Some extensions may have functions returning the installed
version as well.

If you look at the output of phpinfo() you'll see a whole bunch of
variables that are set differently depending on the OS (eg
SERVER_SOFTWARE, SystemRoot, _SERVER), although personally I would set
the name of the current OS in a configuration file. Less room for error
that way.

To discover whether an application exists, use system() to call it and
check the return value provided by the OS. I think you'll find it
returns FALSE on failure.

thanks very much for your help - i understand now that no matter what
kind of array i think i'm making, it is being morphed into an associative
array.  i half-understood this from the docs, but was puzzled.. i expected
the behaviour of an array in other languages, which even if i were to
define an array in this sequence:

$arr[2] = "z";
$arr[0] = "x";
$arr[1] = "y";

would shuffle itself internally into a sequence like: x, y, z.

but in php this obviously isn't the case, and it remains: z, x, y.

Well, all these 3 arrays are _exactly_ the same. If you print_r() them
you'd see
Array {
0 => one
1 => two
2 => three
}
The key to this issue seems to be understanding that it makes no difference
how the array keys are constructed... an array is an association of key to
value, being a hash  always if you want to see it that way.

You're chosing your own keys here - so this makes a perfect associative
array, even if the keys ($row['production_id']) would be a sequenced
number. If you would just add the titles up ($this->all_productions[] =
$row['title']), PHP would choose an index key for you - the most general
thing it can do is to enumerate it. Basically what it does is
 array[count(array)] = new_element

So much for the "theory" - what are you really trying to achieve? Maybe
there's something you can redesign so you're not relying on the fact if an
array is "enumerated" or not.

the source array is based on a directory listing, so i don't think there's
a possibility of that happening?

What would be the value then?

If I get you correctly, you would treat an array that comes like
[0] => entry 0
[1] => entry 1
[2] => entry 2
as
[entry 0] => ??
[entry 1] => ??
[entry 2] => ??

What happens when there are duplicate values in the source array? You will
loose entries on duplicate values.

If I got you right here have a look at array_flip()
(http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.array-flip.php) to exchange array sides.

You can't tell with absolute certainty if an array is enumerated, or built
as associative array. Take this example:

the array index is not useful to me in this situation.

Just a note, testing for those characters is trickier than it sounds.  The
backslash throws off the test.  Here's what I did on a POST form.  Note the
-two- backslashes.


$chkstring=substr($thisfile,0,5);

}

This seems to work, but I'm wondering if there's a better way.
