[PHP] PHP Hosting - Coupon

2008-03-17 Thread Daniel Brown
As some of you are aware, my hosting company, PilotPig, has been
struggling a lot with phishers and fraud. Stolen PayPal accounts used
to pay for hosting accounts on my servers. As a result - and in
celebration of the only holiday that I actually give a damn about -
I'm doing a 50% off coupon for monthly, quarterly, semi-annual, and
annual subscriptions on 10GB/75GB Developer accounts and 50GB/150GB
reseller accounts.

I'm finally fed up. Since this time last year, it's cost me
literally thousands. After today, I'm pulling the plug on public
sales and will only set up new accounts manually until I'm ready to
deal with the BS of these jackasses again. I'm by no means cutting
out the hosting service - there's no worry about that. I'm only
ceasing automated public sales.

Basically, the two reasons I'm doing this are (1) because it's
Saint Paddy's Day - Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit! And (2) because I'd
like to get at least a single-digit positive number for reporting for
Q1 2008 for my accounting. So far, my losses for 2008 look like I
stuck a mirror up to someone's paycheck. I just had two homeless
gentlemen laugh and point at me and tell me my family is poor.

Anyway, it's 50% off, comes with SSH/unlimited
databases/blah/blah/blah. Ask for references here on the list and I
don't think it'll be a problem to get some honest feedback from our
peers here. Check it out (and don't mind the layout I'm a

Rich (Davey) is probably about right. At most, the site you
linked to is probably four pages --- index, service information, form
"thanks", and the optional form error. Figure approximately two hours
for each simple page to account for adjustments to font and such, two
hours for designing the header and footer, and another two hours for
adjusting the finished product as directed by your client. If you
already have a form-to-mail script ready, you may not even want to add
the development cost for that into the final product, but that's
completely up to you. Multiply the final number by your standard
hourly rate and shave or inflate the number as you see fit and fair.

With hosting, if the client wants to be completely hands-off,
remember to include about an hour to set up the site, transfer the
domain, and set up the email accounts. And as far as pricing the
two-year hosting option, I agree with Davey again: by charging double
for what it would cost you to host the site, and for such a small
site, you're making extra money off the deal, while still being fair
to your client. However, I'd be sure to get the money paid up-front
for the hosting, rather than try to set up automatic billing from your
account with the expectation of being paid by the client each month.

And another point on hosting --- that signature line in my email
isn't just to fill space and piss off people who may be receiving the
list on their Blackberry. If you don't have a host and you host with
me, you'll get 50% off using the coupon in my signature. So doubling
it will actually be the advertised price on the site.

How's that for a shameless plug? ;-P

Would you be re-designing the site? (God I hope so)

It's not exactly complex, but I don't know how quickly you can design,
even so I'd be looking at £200 - £250 per day spent on that.

Hosting would be barely anything for such a small site, do you already
have a host you use? If so take their prices, add your mark-up (x2)
and voila.

I'd hope the hosting would include email by default. I'd never charge
extra for this (unless the email requirements were well out of the
ordinary)

A days worth of update work.. see above.

This is off topic so feel free to reply off list.

My question is how much is it reasonable to charge for the following:

1. Building a very small website (you can see it here:

2. Hosting it for two years
3. Providing email accounts as need be
4. Probably a days worth of update work

I not interested in actual costs, but more commercial worth.

Thanks.

I found Media Temple more annoying than helpful as webhosts. Getting
SSH access was like pulling teeth.

Dreamhost mostly left me alone to do my job, except for the
stupid/funny newsletter. There is probably down-time, but I hacked a
fail-safe roll-over to another server elsewhere, so I don't even
notice it being down.

YMMV

I would not consider either one a "top notch" operation, frankly...

There are a few million other hosts to choose from, fortunately.

2007-05-24 Thread Jared Farrish

I use MediaTemple, and what I like is that it's a company geared towards a
category of developers, and not ANY person who wants a website. So the
services and support are commensurate for a company that offers services
primarily aimed at professional design-oriented firms and/or developers, and
not Joe Schmo "Website Author." Service request responses have always been
quick, I've never lost data, had a website disappear altogether, etc...

The GRID server configuration is nice at a $20 pricepoint. With PHP5
supported and safe_mode turned off, I can't wait to get off the shared
server.

Shawn Inman is a modestly-famous web designer/developer who uses MediaTemple

One of my customers uses mediatemple. I've had good experience with
their Dedicated Virtual Server solution. I recently migrated their old
MT server to the new setup that uses CentOS 4.4, PHP 4.3.9, and MySQL
4.1.20. It's nice because it's a completely isolated Virtual Server with
root access to configure things as you please. Since they use the free
CentOS it's easy to compile stuff in a VMWare clone and migrate the
binaries over. General admin goes through Plesk which is pretty much
idiot proof.

Rob.

Request latency due to distance and intermediate hops. The shorter the
distance and fewer hops the faster those little images, stylesheets, and
various other embedded media will load. This won't be very noticeable on
the first page load due to the download times, but other requests that
check timestamps against cache will appear more sluggish than necessary.

It's also more fault tolerent. I don't imagine this ever happening, but if
the UK was somehow cut off from all other countries internet system, then
the UK customers would still be able to access sites in the UK, but not
sites outside of the UK. It's one less thing that can go wrong.

Lovely cogent bandwidth too... you get what you pay for, which in this
case is almost nothing.

ServerPronto/Infolink have also been listed for spam on several occasions.

Being a former customer, I don't recommend them at all.

It works great for me, and you can host all the
domains you want. You will have to learn how to use Apache, though.

Check out http://mediatemple.com

They offer what they call alternate domains, whereby you can host
other websites within your own, sharing disk space, bandwith, and stats.

https://www.mediatemple.net/services/webhosting/feature_highlights/multi-domain/

You point the alternate domain's IP to your own nameservers and ask
Media Temple's tech support crew (whose service I really like, by the
way) to activate it as an alternate domain. Then the alternate
domain has the external look & feel of an independent domain. This
is MUCH cleaner than the frame-driven approach some other hosts
provide for sub-hosting.

Because of the shared assets we don't use alternate domains for our
serious client accounts, whom we figure ought to have their own
webstats and admin control panel, but I've found it perfect for pet
projects, workspaces, and certain small client sites for whom we
perform all admin functions.

Failing that, Doster (the registrar I use) can let me point a domain to a

The hosting company I'm with right now is great for the fact that I locked my
domains in at $20/year before they upped their prices (yeah... twenty per year) but
they're kind of mom & pop and I'd like some place a little bigger and more
professional even if it means paying more per month.

I'm more interested in storage space than bandwidth right now, but that may
change later (as the stuff being stored is accessed of course).

I don't need many email addresses or databases. Don't need a shell account.
Cron jobs/scheduled tasks (of PHP scripts) would be really nice.

Maybe look for reseller acccounts and become your own reseller for all
the sub-accounts.

Or find somebody who gives enough HD space for your biggest accounts
that you don't care about sharing.

You may find this interesting -- I found a host on eBay for only
$6.95 per year. I figured, what the heck, the most I could lose was
$7 so I tried it. Now it's my main site to do my coding. I never have
any problems and the host is reasonable (but slow) with making the
changes I request.

I use Pair Networks (www.pair.com) and they allow this easily. You
control which directories your domains point to (or you can stack one
domain on-top of another to save money if they aren't being used).
Custom DNS is supported if you need it, disabled if not. You can run
your own scripts via cron and they've got PHP 4 natively and PHP 5
available as a CGI. I've got numerous very high traffic sites hosted
with them, and have never had an issue in the 10+ years I've been a
customer (that's a long time fullstop, let alone to be with a single
hosting company).

[PHP] Hosting woes and PHP 4.3.8 install (Interland)

2004-12-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
My hosting company is very stubborn when it comes to functionality. They do
not compile their version of PHP 4.3.8 with DOM so now none of my XML
generating code works.

The environment is a virtual host meaning that I share space on a server
with other users but only I have access to my stuff. The software packages
including Apache and PHP are installed with scripts that create links from
where the files should be to where the files actually are (their home in
virtual package land). For example the httpd.conf file is not in the
/etc/httpd directory, a link is there to point Apache to the actual file.

I have access to make changes to these files, that is not my problem. My
problem is breaking the other PHP dependent applications such as Squirrel
Mail.

So my question is, where is php actually installed on a normal machine? I
would like to compile 4.3.8 with DOM support, and point Apache to the new
.so file, in a location of my choice. Does this sound possible if so would
it be this simple?

Thanks for the insight!
Tim

It may be. It shouldn't be, though. SFTP at the very least. Getting
someone's FTP login is pretty easy compared to something secure.

I realize that any FTP can be sniffed. I was speaking to his host not
wanting to allow the FTP command on the server, which would mean
outgoing FTP requests.

Yes, it should all be SSL based.

Actually any plain old ftp is subject sniffing. A better solution is to use
chrooted ssh accounts. There are enough clients out there which supports file

I don't see how it would be a security problem. They probably just
don't understand and think you want FTP access to the server. Allowing
outbound FTP is only an issue if people sniff the network because they
can see your login in plaintext.

I thought there were PEAR packages which implemented the FTP protocol,
but it looks like they use the FTP functions in PHP. You can try to
find a PHP class which actually implements the FTP protocol (with
sockets). You may be able to find one. If not, you'll have to switch.

[PHP] hosting provider won't enable ftp_connect()

2004-08-10 Thread Brian Anderson
I am trying to get a hosting provider(Godaddy.com) to enable the ftp_connect
extensions to php. They tell me that they cannot do so for security reasons.
Is this really such a security issue?

At php.net I read the advice:

"for ftp to work you must do ./configure --enable-ftp in php4"

...and from phpcollab.com:

"You should ask your hosting provider to install those for you, probably
they will do without much problem. Or, if they don't want to, you should

I have some accounts with them, and they seem fine to me. All of my use is
restricted to personal use, however. Remember, you're only paying $10/month, so
you're going to be on a shared server, limited support, etc.

Some of my sites generate approximately a million PHP hits (HTTP requests for
*.php) a month, so they can handle moderate traffic as well.

Hope that helps.

Re: [PHP] Low Cost PHP Hosting

2002-09-06 Thread Justin French

For testing out stuff, I'd recommend you set up apache/php/mysql on your
local machine (win, linux, unix, mac osx all work), it's a lot easier to
save a file locally and hit refresh in your browser than having to FTP the
updated file again and again and again.

AS far as hosts go, I'm sure if you searched the archives for "HOST", you'd
find 1000's of posts and suggestions.

Phil,

Yes, in the UK, UK Linux is good, I have an account. They do a free
account too (just use the phone line for 1hour per month). There are
differing grades for better services.

Alternatively, this question comes up so often that it well worth

http://34sp.com/ are pretty good, and at £15 a year (about US$20 I believe),
they're certainly low cost :-)

I'd stay away from http://zenithtech.com/ though, lots of people I know have

File permissions.

Each user has their own username, but all are a member of the group
"hosting"
They can CHMOD their files to whatever they like, so security is really up
to them.

And PHP's Safe mode of course.

but the simplist solution is running PHP in safe mode, it does limit the

Open_basedir restrictions

Use PHP in CGI mode and each runs as it's own user with access to only
