I saw that in the changelog, but I don't think it's my responsibility to
override the maintainer here. If ftpmaster says this needs to be
reverted, then so be it, but I trust this wasn't done behind their
backs.

Maybe the release team need to be aware of bug 592457 not fixed in
ffmpeg_0.5.2-3 ?

except that it doesn't, it refuses to do upgrade vlc-nox in this
scenario. If forced with 'apt-get install vlc-nox', then I can finally
reproduce the problem.

I now could verify that this indeed fixes the bug properly.

interesting.

as said before, I had to explicitly request the upgrade.

TBH, I find this bug highly obscure and I think it will not be a problem
in practice. However, we have a patch now uploaded to the archive which
is known to fix the problem.

Dear release team, please unblock ffmpeg_0.5.2-3 for squeeze.

- do a basic lenny installation
- apt-get install vlc-nox
- sed -i s,lenny,sid,g /etc/apt/sources.list
- apt-get update -qq
- apt-get dist-upgrade

should show the problem ( i don't test it with chroot but
by creating status and Packages files with the package
universe needed as used by apt/test/integration/ as i don't
want to test the actual installation, but the theory is the same ).

As i tried to describe above APT rates the package which should
be removed as too important - at least compared to the package
it can fix with this remove, so if you see this error or not depends
on the installed packages:
With ffmpeg is the dependency chain strong enough to indicate
that libavcodec51 has to leave, if you have only vlc-nox (which doesn't
require ffmpeg) installed the chain isn't strong enough.
Also, requesting a package explicitly with install will modify the
scoring so you will likely get a different situation compared to a
dist-upgrade.

So, in summary: Its possible that no "normal" user will ever
see this upgrade problem as such a user will likely have more
packages installed which depend on these libav* stuff…
(you only need to define what a "normal" user is now…)

After preparing an upload for this, I've tried to reproduce this issue
myself in a virtual machine. The thing is, I've not been able to
reproduce this neither with lenny's apt, nor squeeze's apt (0.7.25.3)
nor sid's (0.8.0) apt.

What I've did was:

 - do a basic lenny installation
 - apt-get install install ffmpeg
 - sed -i s,lenny,sid,g /etc/apt/sources.list
 - apt-get update -qq
 - apt-get install ffmpeg

AFAIUI the bugreport, this should trigger this bug, however, I fail to
reproduce it. I've also tried with vlc and vlc-nox, but this worked just
fine as well.

Lucas, could you please assist me here how to reproduce this bug?

Sorry, should have sent that to the bug itself, too…
(we discussed that a bit on irc last week i think)

It would be nice if you could fix it in your package
(which at least feels a bit cleaner anyway: liba2 breaks liba1
sounds saner than libpartlyunrelated breaks liba1).

The thing is, fixing it for APT is a bit more complicated than it looks:
The patch changes a line which is old. And if i say old than i mean
that this one-line patch circumvents the score-consideration introduced
in rev. 8 of the source. Call me nostalgic, but i am pretty sure that
changing code which is from 1998 and survived until now shouldn't
be changed to upgrade one package shortly before a release if
it can be worked-around easily…
(okay, the breaks are newer - they are from 2006…)

Not because this couldn't be an old bug, but because changing it
now without in-deep testing will very likely break something else.
(scoring is an important concept in the resolver, so my personal guess
is that we can safely place bets on the possibility that it will break…)

We can consider this after squeeze then we have ~2 years of
testing before shipping it…

Some test failures are likely caused by other problems. I don't believe
that the 87 failures I'm seeing are all caused by this one.

that correct? Can we expect to see this patch in squeeze, or shall I

CC'ing the release list for input, since we are in freeze now.

If you move the Breaks from libavformat52 to libavcodec52 and depend on
the libavcodec52 with that breaks, it will work.

This would not be totally correct as libavcodec51 is in stable, and
partial upgrades would break.

This smells like a apt bug, it seems to not parse the versioned Breaks
correctly? aptitude gets it right.

Since all the packages in Squeeze have been recompiled and libavcodec51
no longer exists, you might just as well drop the Breaks. AFAICT it was
needed for the transition, which is now done?

I'd prefer to keep it RC until we identify the root issue: ok, this is
on a simple case, but it might be caused by another issue in apt that
could break many more upgrade cases.

Of course, if the release team disagrees, I'm fine with that.

because it can be fixed by running the upgrade in several steps?
feel free to raise severity if you feel this is RC, but I wouldn't hold
up the release for this issue.

In any case, Moritz has localized this issue:

j...@galadriel:~$ sudo chroot chroots/lenny/
r...@galadriel:/# apt-get install libavformat52 libavcodec51
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
libavcodec51 is already the newest version.
libavcodec51 set to manually installed.
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libavformat52: Breaks: libavcodec51 (< 3:0.svn20090303-1) but
0.svn20080206-18+lenny1 is to be installed
E: Broken packages
r...@galadriel:/#

The breaks is in place to force apt to not install libavformat52
together with libavcodec51; The corresponding changelog entry is here:

ffmpeg-debian (3:0.svn20090303-1) unstable; urgency=low

[...]
  * The libavformat52 now links against libavcodec52, which breaks
applications that *ALSO* link against libavcodec51. Adding a

Now we are having other upgrade problems. hrmpf.

any ideas what's the correct approach here?

this is wrong, because there is a newer version of libavformat52. Why
apt doesn't see it?

This is correct, we don't have libavformat-extra-52 in Debian. Possibly
we will see it for squeeze+1, it clearly missed the freeze for squeeze.

this is correct, because libavcodec has bumped SONAME from 51 to 52.

So, after installing vlc-nox/lenny and upgrading to sid:

-> trying to upgrade just vlc-nox:
parapide-16:~# apt-get install vlc-nox

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  vlc-nox: Depends: libavformat52 (>= 4:0.5.1-1) but 0.svn20080206-18+lenny1 is

parapide-16:~# apt-get install vlc-nox libavformat-extra-52
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree

Package libavformat-extra-52 is not available, but is referred to by another
package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libavformat-extra-52 has no installation candidate

  libsysfs2 libx11-6 libid3tag0 dbus-x11 libmpcdec3 libfaad0
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libavcodec51 libvlc0
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libavformat52 vlc-nox

this basically says that libavformat52 from debian/squeeze was not
installable, no? I find this pretty hard to believe, espc. since it has
been isntalled successfully earlier in the log.

the last step of your script seems to install again a larger number of
packages from sid, but holds back libavformat. This seems to be the
actual culprit of this problem, but from the log it's totally unclear to
me why this happens.
