On my current laptop there are two boot options: one takes you to the BIOS and the other (F7) gives you a list of devices from which you can select the one to boot to. I figured out how to get to the bios. There is not boot-order option I am accustomed to--the order is set by properties UEFI/legacy rather than CD/HD, etc. I set it to legacy, but it still did not boot the CD. UEFI is disabled as well. Denis, Often, pressing F12 while the system goes through its POST will bring up the BIOS interface. In there you can change the order in which the kernel looks for a boot kernel, Placing the optical drive and usb ports before the internal hard drive allows you booting options. Re: [PLUG] 16.04.3 VGA Graphic display stopped working
Ed Thank you for the response, I did some experimentation It has been 5 days since I first experienced this issue. On a lark I tried "apt-get update" "apt-get upgrade" on both problem systems and the *problem resolved on both systems*. None of the updates appeared to be display related!?!?? I recallrf doing an "apt autoremove" to prior to reboot before the problem appeared. Tried that again and BINGO, display problems again. Even the F1 terminal mode was not stable. Had to ssh in from another system and did another update/upgrade This time no updates occurred. Rebooted. Display *working*.again. Not sure what to think now Will avoid the "autoremove" in the future -- Bill Morita 512-569-6387 (Cell) On Tue, Aug 8, 2017 at 8:38 AM, King Beowulfwrote: > On 08/05/2017 09:04 PM, Alan wrote: > > On Fri, 2017-08-04 at 10:04 -0700, Bill Morita wrote: > >> 16.04.3 VGA Graphic display stopped working. > >> Even a No-Machine connection does not seem to work. > >> > >> Ctrl-Alt-F1 does get me a simple text terminal. > >> > >> Anybody else seen this ? > >> > >> It has happened on both my systems. > >> Currently booting to an older kernel to operated. > >> > > > > What video card? [PLUG] Migrating Win 10 on new machine to VirtualBox
I just purchased a new desktop machine. It has Windows 10 pro, not yet activated. After installing Ubuntu I would like to be able to run this Windows as a guest in VB. My searching tells me that this can be a bit tricky. I am not in any hurry to migrate. I first want to make sure I do not do anything which will cut off this possibility. Do I need to backup something from the machine before I install Linux, or can I just use the COA sticker to get what I need from Microsoft after I have wiped the HD, installed Ubuntu and VB? I have no reason to run Win 10 (except as a guest) on the machine other than to initially ensure myself that the machine is functioning properly.
