I have a vaguely clever network relay via an AWS instance (maybe moving
to linode soonish) to serve my self-hosted email server. It involves an
OpenVPN tunnel, some iptables rules and some source-routing. It isn't
the only way or even necessarily the generally best way to do it, but it
is *a* way and moreover, it is my way and it has some features that I like.

That's probably isn't enough to fill an hour, so I thought I'd pair that
with some show-and-tell regarding my DDS and QIC tape recovery project
from a couple months ago.

Thank you everyone who came last night!

We had 18 people with record diversity.

Thoughts:

1. Maybe start at 6PM, especially for social aspects?
Feedback: "I could come straight from work!"
Feedback: "That would put me in traffic for an extra hour"

2. Have food there?
I brought a platter of sandwiches and a small keg of beer to two or so
PLUG AT meetings and Intel had snacks.

The Center has kitchen, for what it's worth.
All previous PLUG food was before DoorDash etc.

3. THANKS AGAIN!

Developer eXperience (DX) is crucial for the success of an API. That is
why API teams build developer portals where the team can publish their
API reference. This is where most teams fail. A great developer
experience requires more than reference docs. In this talk Kristof Van

great DX.

The hardware overview does not mention IPS for what is supposed to be my
IPS X230 birthday present to myself and the parts lookup redirects to a
few too many sites for me to dig.

Assume all models are non-IPS.

I forgot to mention: The X220i (Celeron) has a cellular modem in it and
the i7 T420 has NVidia graphics, though someone has inquired about it*.

* Supposedly you cannot manually configure "Integrated/Discreet"
graphics on newer models. In my perfect world, the keyboard change would
have come after the '30 Ivy Bridge models but such is life.

Tragically, the "X25" anniversary model does nothing for me short of the
keyboard. Bah.

After spending 40 years being a System Administrator, frequent PLUG
attendee Brian Martin will share what he's learned in his quest to be
the best System Administrator he could be. While primarily targeted at
system administration, many of his points are equally applicable to
programmers, web developers, and anyone working in IT.

About Brian

Brian first laid hands on a computer in 1970. He earned his first money
in IT ($5) in high school, and continued contract programming through
college. After working for many years as a system programmer in
government and private industry he began his own consulting company in
1994. He relocated to Portland in 1996 in the successful pursuit of
love, and has been here ever since. He lives with his wife and and a
pair of dogs on the west side. He enjoys eating out with friends, live
performances of jazz, comedy, and Shakespeare, games of all kinds, and
hopes to return to hiking and photography in retirement.

You probably have a good sense of data protection in the sense of
"backups" but alas, there is more to it. This talk will cover ten key
aspects of Data Protection and discuss open source technologies that
address them.

Is your data...

1. Integrous – Maintaining integrity and consistency
2. Resilient – Resistant to mechanical failures/outages
3. Versioned – Accessible in a previous state
4. Replicated – “Backed up” to local and remote locations
5. Archived – Versioned and replicated for long-term storage
6. Secure – Resistant to unauthorized theft or destruction
7. Private – Available for authorized purposes only
8. Available – Accessible in a timely manner
9. Usable – Equally available now and in the future
10. Compliant – with legal and regulatory requirements

Bring your questions and experiences for a livid^H^H^H^H^H vivid and
vibrant discussion.

Bonus: Discussion about the future of PLUG Advanced Topics and other
PLUG housekeeping, planning and fun!

Super bonus: Michael will not be here in September and see Bonus one.

I got a sense at one point that any venue with food and a room had a
flaw in their business model, having blown through Jax, Club 915, what
is now a wine bar near Free Geek...

Moving to Free Geek resolved that issue and at worst they had a board
meeting that ran a few minutes late and we had to wait. Otherwise it was
great to work there. As a community center, they do see value in
partnering with PLUG. The Clinic is obviously doing well and Wes, does
someone from Free Geek need to be present? If not, I am not aware of any
pressing issues short of my finding time to work out all details with
them and being available to organize AT.

Note that I did bring food and drinks to a few AT meetings.

Calagator is a HUGE win here given that people can determine if they
want to see a talk on "talking to recruiters" or "Advanced Valgrind" or
"FPGA programming". The burden will always be on finding a steady flow
of speakers, announcing, optionally streaming... etc.

I have been busy with FreeNAS training and may package something up
given how popular that was last round.

Any requests?

That's your call. The change in Free Geek's building policy made it a
bit of a pain. They officially want payment and want someone from Free
Geek to be present for the meeting. They are willing to waive the fee
but strangely not remove it from the contract as per our last discussion.

[PLUG] 4th of July Disruption?

2017-06-20 Thread Michael Dexter

Hello all,

I suspect I am not alone in having something planned for the 4th of July
week. I will wrap up some camping on Thursday, making my PLUG
participation a bit unlikely.

The same may go for some speakers I have in mind.

Any objections to calling off the July meeting at PSU?

Alternatively, would you like to have a free-for-all roundtable
discussion in my absence?

It shouldn't and I have not seen that. This behavior would suggest a
hardware issue that is outside of FreeNAS' reach.

'zpool list' to see if your desired pool is closer to 4TB rather than
8Tb. 'zpool status' to see the pool topology (stripe, mirror, RaidZ...)

You definitely want to avoid some greens. They have "green" firmware
that puts them to sleep, convincing ZFS that the drive has failed. Reds
are good but not great.

Abstract: From late March 2015 through April 2016, long-time PLUG member

No one in fact wants to Read The Fine Manual. Adding a user should not

This all comes down to a person who can reliably find presenters.

[PLUG] PLUG Advanced Topics Volunteer?

2017-03-19 Thread Michael Dexter

Hey,

Might anyone want to manage PLUG Advanced Topics on the third Tuesday of
the month?

I have not heard back on if Free Geek is truly fine with us under their
new building use policy and I have a heckava year ahead of me.

Any takers? Do consider exploring the hands-on hack-on-stuff nature of it.

[PLUG] TONIGHT! PLUG Meeting: The Biz of Community

While community management and developer relations are gaining
acceptance, many companies still don't know how these efforts can
benefit not only the communities of the open source projects on which
their business relies but also their productivity and profitability.

In this talk, I'll look at community from a business perspective,
including the effect community can have on an organization's bottom
line. Although there are communities everywhere, I'll approach the
topic—meaning, communities, their members, and their contributors—from a
free/open source perspective.

In this talk I will also cover:

* Business reasons for supporting a community
* Metrics for gauging community management success from the business'
perspective
* Getting started in community management
* Risks of community management

There has been some great feedback on this question already and I can
only add a few points:

1. Don't limit yourself to "Linux" given that nearly every modern
technology bumps into GNU/Linux in some way already.

2. The points like help desk are very good because in-the-trenches
insights are very, very helpful for... coding. I sincerely wish every
FreeNAS developer (FreeBSD-based) had spent a year or more in the
trenches before they wrote a single line of code.

3. If you're greedy: Look at the most in-demand projects and dive into
them. Wordpress and OpenStack come to mind. They are insanely-contrived
and leave countless opportunities for legions of people. Find some
single component that interests you and find a way to help. Demonstrate
value and then dismissively mention you are considering full-time work.
If you can do that one thing... others will be considered added benefits.

Yes, I am bit cynical on all this because the tools should be
well-written, intuitive and not require extensive specialized experience
to make them work... but, they are and do.

Step one is what both parties have proposed: "Join forces" on the PLUG
events so they are just formal enough to meet their mission (zero
concern) and eliminate any need to pay for access.

As for long-term. PLUG and Free Geek have had various forms of
partnerships for decades. The rise of their education classes is a huge
step forward for this type of "education" we both provide and if we all
had more time, we should be teaching courses there.

As you may or may not know, there was a risk they would lose their lease
during the housing boom. Fortunately, that storm passed and they are on
good footing. I have not met the new Executive Director but so far they
seem reasonable in the face of this little issue.

As for what Tomas is discussing, I would LOVE a facility with the nice
lecture space of PSU and the lab area of Free Geek, hosted by either
institution. (I know the two different locations suit different peole
better) Free access is a big plus because we can set up early (often a
problem at PSU) and staying late allows for in-depth conversations
(could be a risk at Free Geek now).

All things considered, I am very grateful to both PSU and Free Geek for
the spaces they provide PLUG and am happy to work around the quirks. The
same goes to SpireTech for hosting.

As for an action item here and now: If you have the time, please
consider getting involved with Free Geek, especially if it is PR or
fundraising-related. People come and go there and it always helps to
stay in active contact with them.

All the best,

I have spoken to Amber the Office Manager and we both agree that we
should entertain the Clinic and Advanced Topics meetings being part of
the Free Geek basket of services. Doing so would bring some additional
PR about meetings and would waive all fees.

Wes: Please contact Amber for an updated alarm code and confirm back

JJJ: Your code is active, we may need you Sunday if Wes cannot reach
Amber at Free Geek today for whatever reasons.

Worse case: Call me and I can come down

Re: [PLUG] freegeek New Building Access Policy

2016-10-21 Thread Michael Dexter

Hello all,

I was approached by someone during the AT meeting and was given the
policy. Yes, they want to do this but they also greatly appreciate PLUG
and what we do. For AT, they may be able to have someone adjust their
schedule to stay late on AT nights. For the clinic, we'll have to see if
that model will also work.

Given that they're concerned about security, I prefer help them pass
around a hat to add a wall and restroom to allow for a separate meeting
space. Having that space and events serves their mission.

I will begin a dialog with them and figure something out.
