Re: [PLUG] HIPAA, FAX, regulations, EPA

2017-09-07 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Pardon my interjecting..

HIPPA is all about backwards responsibility e.g. who has deep pockets.
We have people that leave HIPPA class info lying all over- But you can't
sue someone living on $10-11 per hour; they have nothing to take. So the
responsibility lies with the ownership (you should see how they handle
class 2 Narcs :0 )

Many years I did the maintenance for a Bank Data Center & check processing
center. All of the canceled checks were to be turned into pulp for
security.
Imagine our surprise when we received a call that hundreds if not thousands
of our checks were blowing around the streets (we sent them out by the
dumpster).
It was found that the Wearhauser driver had not secured the lid to a
dumpster.

Many, Many years ago I did some of the initial building maintenance of HF 1
(they only had 2 buildings in Hillsboro back then) for Intel. Even at that
time
they trucked their florescent tubes to Massachusetts for 'Environmental
Disposal'.
They probably smashed them in a compactor as we would have but Intel
received a 'Certificate of Compliance' so no one could ever point a finger.

Good Grief Charlie Brown..

Re: [PLUG] Linux Widows Guide

2017-08-28 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Humm...

As a side issue I'll be returning to school for Software Engineering
& Embedded systems. Hoping to have some of my student loans
forgiven I was thinking of setting up something where we take given-away
computers and install a variant of Linux education for poor Montessori
programs,
charter schools, etc. that can afford nothing but free software.
But then what? Even if I write scripts to auto update, remove extra
kernels,
etc. after a few years the systems would need work. I was thinking of
writing
a simply, lay flat, laminated, binder book with simple flow charts. E.g.
"If this
happens try these three things following the chart.." But again that would
be at least 2 years away.

Re: [PLUG] Ethereum Mining

2017-08-23 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Merlin,

  Ethereum is a 'cripto-currency' like Bitcoin e.g. it's a
computer algorithm
based on blockchain. That opens the question of what currency is be it
sea-shells, cattle, gold or pretty pieces of paper like we use...

If you do it as a hobby keep it as such. Some Chinese adventurers &
others have set up racks of powerful computers to mine crypto-currency
so you would always loose in competition with them.

Run some quick searches on Firefox to learn more.

[PLUG] I'm shopping for hardware, what about Lenovo?

2017-08-23 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

My Dell Insperon 15.6" that I was going to use in school this
September just died (the Motherboard no longer recognized
the Hd).

I need reliability & durability more than anything. I'll need it
to last at least 1 year.

I'll be going to school for Software Engineering & Embedded
systems e.g. HTML, Perl, Unix, etc, etc.

I was thinking about replacing it with a Lenovo ThinkPad T570:

15.6" display

32 GB DDR4 2133Mhz SoDIMM Ram

For the hard drive they show :

Intel 180GB SSD 2.5 SATA3,OPAL2.0
or
512 GB SSD OPAL2.0 PCle-NVMe

(The 1 Tb version is $140 more.)

Q: What is the difference between

SATA3,OPAL2.0 & PCle-NVMe?

As an OS I'll probably be running Linux Mint, I just don't have
time to tinker with new operating bases at this point.

[PLUG] Apt-get is corrupted?

2017-01-24 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Greetings,

A few weeks ago I gave a system (ASUS laptop, 4 gig ram, 250 gig SSD)
in Linux mint 18.0 and not knowing what to do she downloaded things directly
from the internet (I did encourage her to take classes @ FG). Now the system
will not update and the message comes up 'apt-get is corrupted' . She also
has problems with the HDMI connection not recognizing an external monitor
(she wants to watch things on her laptop projected on her TV , mine worked
just fine on the same connection).

I pulled things on the news groups and people suggested:

apt-get -f install

sudo apt-get install -f

sudo dpkg --configure -a

I don't know if anything in Synaptic will work.

If not I'll teach her how to do a fresh install.

[PLUG] Mint 18.0 Cinnamon 64-bit: Message 'Boot is Full'

2016-11-13 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

I'm running a relatively new HP Pavilion desktop with:
Mint 18.0 Cinnamon 64-bit
Version 3.0.7
Linux Kernel 4.4.0-47-generic
AMD A8 CPU
RAM 14.6
HD 945.9GB

Yesterday it threw a message at my of: Boot is Full

I've used the default installation settings for Boot & Grub.

**
I did a quick search on Chromium and some people recommended:

apt-get -f install
apt-get clean
dpkg

I searched the Mint site and some recommendations were:

Using the Synaptic Package Manager to remove old kernel
images (but I'd need to know which ones...)

**
Question:

I must be having a senior moment... Is there a quick easy way
to remove the unneeded items or, just make the Boot partition larger?
I'm no super user but I can run some simple command lines.

There are some files on this machine that I'd like to save.
If I totally bonk things I do have a laptop running 17.3 that
I can use.

Re: [PLUG] Linux Laptop Recommendation

2016-11-12 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Beware that some new laptops are 'sealed' e.g. you can't
open them with a screwdriver. I have an ASUS lap top wherein
you have to pry open the corner with a screwdriver and slide a credit
card or something around the perimeter 'breaking the plastic clips loose';
sometimes the clips break off.

I wanted to add RAM but it was soldered in place and could not be upgraded.

The battery was also sealed inside the case so you couldn't pop it out.

If you think you'll ever need to upgrade RAM, hard drive, etc. I'd go to
your
favorite store and physically handle the item in question.

Also note that some manufactures 'lock out' the BIOS.
Quick web searches on particular models might save some grief.

I almost wondered if this was going to start just before

I had a similar problem with MS turning off my Word and Office

What it came down to for me was this:
If I write something in MS Word who owns the intellectual property

Hummm, this is interesting. I was speaking with Wes at the
last PLUG lab and I pointed out that I'd been on the internet
since 1986 when I was using Jughead (?) Gopher (?) and
pulling FTP files off of the web. And in many ways the web
was just as fast back then because we didn't have Flash, Java

circumvent these issues.

[PLUG] Local Domain Hosting ? A semi-newbie question

so that the email would be something like:

Also I hope to set up a non 14 eyes VPN in the next week or two

Re: [PLUG] Subject matter for a talk?

2016-05-16 Thread Vedanta Teacher
We worked on this for hours yesterday and never got OpenBSD to seat
on the hard drive. We tried various releases including 6.0 but nothing
worked.
Wes was kind enough to burn and try FreeBSD but when we rebooted it
said there was no OS on the hard drive. We came to the conclusion that
the hardware was too new; its a Dell Insperon 3000 series, model 3558,
and there is no support yet.
I have a live CD coming and it should be here in several weeks so I'll try
that next. If that doesn't work I have a 6+ year old Lenovo lap top that I
need to dissemble and repair to try as well. If I have time tonight I'll
look
at the tech postings @ OpenBSD and see if others have had similar issues.

Thank You,

[PLUG] Subject matter for a talk?

2016-05-12 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

Was the next talk Tuesday the 17th @ Free Geek?

I can see that Michael D. does many of the talks and its difficult
to find subject matter. What about a round table about non-traditional
methods of installing Linux & BSD?

If you've seen my posts on installing OpenBSD it might be interesting.
The options for installing OpenBSD are endless; openSuse, I think
offers Leap & Tumble weed but no live CD, PC-BSD is happy
to sell you a Live CD. The question for anyone entering Open Source
is where to begin?

By the way; as a side discussion I've found Dell to be very good about
posting support pages on modifying its BIOS/UEFI and the BIOS
is very easy to modify for installation. Other manufactures are not
so helpful...

Thank You,
Paul W.

Thank you, I'll try that too. I did have one CD that only had a [

file. I'll try what you suggested in the morning.

I feel like I need Star Trek music or something...

David,

Indeed, I poured through the Man pages & I have a copy of
Absolute OpenBSD and I followed the instructions as closely
as I could.

I was just pondering if I should install 5.8 & Xenocara (I have
a second post on Xenocara) , see how it works and take it
from there. I did still want to install of the proper dependencies.

[PLUG] Does anyone have experience installing OpenBSD and/or a Live CD I could use?

2016-05-11 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Greetings,

Does anyone have experience installing OpenBSD for civilian use and/or a
Live CD set?

I have a relatively new Dell Insperon lap top W/6 gigs RAM and 1 TB HDD .
3000 series,
model 3558., Intel i3-5051U so, I'm 99.9%+ sure its an AMD64 type of chip.

#0: I don't have a Live CD so I tried to download the 5.9 version from a
HTTP mirror
in San Francisco ( http://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/5.9/amd64/ ). I
burned it to
a CD but it didn't work. I've gone all of the way from just trying :
install59.iso
to burning and trying all of the images on the:
Index of/pub/OpenBSD/5.9/amd64
but nothing worked.

#1: I do have other live CD's so I popped the one for OpenSUSE in and the
message
"Welcome to Grub" popped up. So I have the UEFI/BIOS configured correctly.
(Blessings to Dell for having such awesome support pages & BIOS settings-
IMHO they are much better that ASUS or HP .)

#2: I'm thinking that I'm pulling & burning the wrong images from HTTP but
I just
don't have enough experience on pulling things off of mirror sites and
making them
work.

#3: I will be at the clinic Sunday with the machine & an extra machine to
burn
images. I'm open to ideas. *But, Don't Do It For Me *, just show me how. If
you
do it for me I'll never learn.

Finally, before everybody flames me just remember. Unlike people that sit on
a distro for years and never change, I'm always willing to push the limits
of my
knowledge, take chances and learn new things. And everybody was a newbie
at some point, I'm just a newbie @ OpenBSD.

Blessings,

Re: [PLUG] Tuesday Advanced Topics?

2016-04-16 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Hari Om,

One basic rule in churches is that 5% of the people do 95% of the work
(I know, in some ways
I helped set up a Hindu Temple). I think the same rule would apply to any
volunteer organization.
That also means the more you put into it the more you get out of it and
that's why organizations
survive long term - people are stronger as groups than as individuals. I'm
reading a book about
the growth of the cult of Mithra in the Roman empire and all the same rules
applied at that time.
**
I couldn't give the talk but for the future I was wondering about a
discussion about people using
non-standard operating systems for daily use and how they deal with the
paucity of information.
For example; I have one system in Ubuntu 14.04, another in Mint 17.3 Rosa
which have a wealth
of support and information and are user friendly. I also have a system in
PC-BSD and would like to
set up a system in Open BSD (I'm reading Absolute OpenBSD by Michael Lucas)
neither is
very user friendly but I'm attracted to the power, security and stability
(in my mind) those systems
offer.

Anyway, it was just a thought.

Peace to you all,
Paul

[PLUG] Any thoughts on installing KDE/Plasma on a Solid State (sans HD) Laptop

2016-02-05 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

I was thinking of picking up a solid state lap top with no physical HD
and installing KDE/Plasma. From what I've read and heard KDE is a
bit resource hungry but its been around a long time and the support
seems stable.

I don't know if there are issues installing KDE on a solid state.

I was looking for a clean, no clutter, no hassle OS and desktop
(please God no more dancing paper clips..) and KDE seemed a
good choice as well as having custom settings. I thought about
FreeBSD I just haven't had time to research it.

I already have multiple computers:
#1: ASUS laptop in Ubuntu Unity 14.04
#2: HP solid state in win 8.x
#3: HP all in one in win 8.x
#4: Lenovo laptop (think pad) in win 7.x (I may reformat and convert to
Mint)

And yes, I do like to tinker, that's why I like F.O.S.S.
I'm not phrasing this correctly but I'm looking for a OS/desktop for
a mature adult. I don't need or want pop up adds for rap videos, womens
kickers , hand holding or the like.

Paul

You unintentionally did a very nice thing. I belong to a local Hindu
temple: Chinmaya Mission.
The Chinmaya Mission is worldwide. There is a chartable arm called
www.cordusa.org
They provide free schooling, nursing schools, orphanages, farming
expertise, micro loans,
etc. Some 65% of rural India is illiterate, has no electricity, running
water , etc. I'll forward the
info on the Raspberry PI to our US coordinator. The Raspberry PI is
something that might
be very useful in schools in rural India. You did your good deed for the

[PLUG] What role could or should the Open Source Software community play in the 2016 election?

2016-02-02 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Blessings,

Let me begin by saying that I haven't belonged to a political party
beginning in 1985-1989 (?)
and have voted independently from that time so I have no ax to grind.

There are multiple accusations of vote fixing or manipulation in Iowa by MS
through a "free"
app. "Free" as in spy ware. How can closed source, proprietary source code
be used to
count something as critical as votes in a free society? I still remember
the Diebold voting
machines in the 2000 election if that is the right year.

I was wondering if there was a role for the open source community (even
hacktavist)
in ensuring free and fair elections.

If this is the wrong group for this posting my apologizes but I already had
this on my
mind and this just confirmed my thoughts. If the corruption and cronyism
goes on long
enough eventually the Open Source Community will be in their sights- Just a
thought.

[PLUG] Two easy questions...

2015-11-05 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

I was hoping to extend my knowledge on Linux, Ubuntu, Open source, and
wanted to find some books somewhere between "Linux for dummies" &
Coding. I know about the BIOS,CMOS, CPU, etc. but I wanted deeper
knowledge on Linux.

  Yes, I still read paper books; just run a search for Fahrenheit 451;
Bradbury
and I have similar thoughts about having incorruptible knowledge in your
possession.

Also,

I was thinking about taking Intro to Linux (LFS 101) through the Linux
Foundation.
I didn't know if there was any experience good or bad with them. With wildly
irregular work schedules its imposable to sit down in a regular academic
session.
I'll also see about classes at Free Geek as time allows.

Re: [PLUG] PLUG Call for Participation

2015-10-08 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

I had to think before I responded to this. I could give several talks
but they
wouldn't relate to Linux or computers. I could speak about:
#1: The Bhagavad-gita. But I would need to introduce a series of words in
Sanskrit
and concepts from Vedanta. The Bhagavad-gita is so vast that even with 1-2
hours
I could only gloss over it. I'm currently awaiting my certification in the
Bhagavad-gita
from the Chinmaya International Foundation in Kerala.
#2: I could give talks on Vedanta (advanced Hindu theology) but again I
would need
to introduce words and concepts in Sanskrit. Interestingly, Vedanta
presages quantum
mechanics in many areas.
#3: I'm currently researching The Paris Commune of 1870 which is quite
interesting. I'm
reading a series of speeches by Karl Marx which are quite applicable to
things going
on in this country today. But I have several months of research to do.
#4: I could also give a lucid talk about the mess in Syria, Yemen, etc. but
I would
need to go back to the Picot-Sykes Agreement and before.

Anything I would do couldn't be until spring of next year.

Blessings,
Paul

[PLUG] I also will bring an old iBook G-4

2015-09-19 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Everyone,

I also have an old iBook G-4 I'll bring too. It is Tiger OSX 10.4,
37.46 gig HD, 1.5 gig ram. I "think" it's an old Motorola CPU.

I have the original discs but I'll be damned if I can remember the
installation password from 2004. We used to be able to get past the
Win (3.1 or 95 ?) passwords by forcing it to boot through the BIOS
(I didn't say that; I'm actually not in the room) but I don't know
if you can do it with the Mac OS.

Feel free to knock yourselves out.

Blessings,
Paul

external
dvd/rw I still do recieve cd's from overseas so I keep that option open.

[PLUG] I have no experience with installing Linux, can anyone help?

2015-09-14 Thread Vedanta Teacher
Greetings,

After cursing MS since 1985 (?) I'd finally like to completely drop
all MS products as far as is piratical. I may keep one isolated MS
machine for applications that will run no where else.

I just picked up a New In Box ASUS laptop 15.6' , Pentium, 4 gigs ram,
500 gig hd. I'd like to completely strip off the factory 8.1 O/S
and install a clean copy of Linux O/S but I don't know how.

I have been reading that I can download Ubuntu Linux and Ubuntu
desktop for free and burn them to a CD but I'm not quite sure of which
version or source.

I already have an HP desk top, Lenovo laptop in 7.0 (?) and an old
iBook G4 so its no tragedy to strip this HD clean. I'd later like to
convert the iBook G4 too.

I already use Open Office, Opera, Firefox (I deleted Google chrome)
so any other suggestions would be helpful.

Note: I am quite literally up at 03:00 hours for work so I cannot make
the 7:00 pm meeting but I can make the meeting Sunday the 20th
@ 1:00 PM at Free Geek in S.E. Portland.

Rich,

Thank You. I'll bring everything Sunday. I do want to get
one machine set up and then convert others.

Should I bring burritos, chips, salsa, etc? I know how
computer people are about food...

Blessings,
Paul
