Hm. I am currently ripping my entire CD library, so I'm adding new music
almost daily. I only run into that problem when I omit running the
scanner and access new files directly.

I think I've figured it out now.
If a song has previously been played, then navigating into the song info page
will display the Rating item (if not rated with be unrated).

after updating 7.2-trunk today i see the same error messages on startup
but with swapped collations:

okay, i found out that tracks_persistent was the only table still at:
CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci
so i adjusted the charset to the same as track_history,
track_statistics and tracks with:
alter table tracks_persistent convert to character set utf8;
(i hope this doesn't break anything

When the tracks_persistent table was created, it was created with
incorrect charset/collate, we noticed it
thanks, that explains it. although i never used the nightly's but svn
(sometimes once a week, sometimes several times a day) this could have
slipped in. remark: watch the startup log on each and every update :)
