As promised, I tried the combination of Squeeze CTRL & SB Player, and
this is exactly what I was looking for. Not only does this "duck" into
the background for notifications from other apps on the phone, it also
pauses the music on TMC messages from the car radio. To top it all off,
it even sends
Borrow an iPhone and install iPeng + player. Based on how it interacts
with the phone and other audio apps I think it may "just work".

OK this is really not going to answer your immediate problem but an
alternative to taking your full music library out on the road could be
Google Music.
You get to upload the whole library for free and can access it from your
phone.

That's strange since control apps to not connect to players directly.

Yes, it really should be handled by the player.
As I see it, you have two options:
1) Run a player app on your phone and send the audio through bluetooth.

I assume that traffic warnings are notifications on the phone? Squeeze
Ctrl can pause/mute for a phone call but not notifications.
