Almost finished server rebuild... Will try cdrom again tomorrow.
Cheers.

To simplify the transcode chain - I have tested with the
CD player Flac - Disabled
MP3 - Disabled
PCM cdda2wav
Not sure but the first test failed with CD drive being reset because it
overloaded (aka over-current) the Pi - at least I now know overloading
is logged. Later test played OK.

In America other radio stations carry on as if the Olympics doesn't
exist, almost nothing gets a mention, meanwhile NBC numbers are plunging
and at an all time low.
Oh dear... I seem to have borked the whole picoreplayer system, as I
can't get the pi to reconnect to the network - both WiFi and ethernet
won't connect.
I'll have to rebuild...
Back later with more queries, no doubt!
The problem, I think, is that much of BBC local radio switches to BBC
Five Live overnight - and given the time zone where the Winter Olympics
is taking place it is quite likely that there will be something live
from the Olympics in that overnight programming ... and BBC cannot
broadcast that

I tried to listen to some BBC Sounds shows today for the first time in
probably a week to 10-days, didn't work. Checked, I have LMS 8.3 running
and the BBC Sounds 2.32.2 plugin.
I shutdown the server, cleared out the logs and restarted. These are the
errors. The behavior is odd though. As I
Okay. Set up without bt and connected by ethernet. Y cable plugged
into 2 ports.
Pi boots and selecting Extras CDplayer gives this:
I'm including the log
Restarting the pi but with cd powered by adapter gives the full plugin
menu, track 1 starts to play but no sound
I'm starting to think

I agree - that's the mystery.

One thing I don't understand ... cdda2wav seemed to work for Castalla
when the extraction was to a wav file.
At least - the output said it worked.
Is it worth doing that again and then copying the resulting .wav file to
a LMS music folder and seeing if it plays using browse folder?

I think it is internal h/w to Pi to make the 4 ports. Just checking.

Comparing my figures with yours and while there is some difference there
is still plenty of free memory. Free memory doesn't change much when
I'm playing a CD track so I think shortage of memory is unlikely to be
the issue.
The setups are so similar, yet yours

The dmesg log below shows up a possible issue.
The USB device idVendor=1c6b, idProduct=a223 is a generic
Philips/Lite-ON CDROM drive
The drive allocated to usb 1-1.2 . Scatterlist errors is logged against
the 1.2 device and next message says "high-speed USB device number 4" -
so clearly there
I set up another server on a win 10 laptop. CD works with one USB
port.
CD plays with plugin to radio with sound.
So, this suggests the drive is not DOA!
Not sure how this helps with the rpi problem.
What do the scatterlist errors mean in my previous post?
Sorry if the answer to this posted elsewhere, but after several days
trying I've not found it and I suspect the solution is simple. (I'm no
programmer.)
I have managed to get the YT plugin apparently working, but there's no
sound.
The server log states this:
