Re: [SlimDevices: Plugins] BBC possible move to HTTPS for content delivery ?

2016-09-19 Thread pippin

But the move to https is to be expected since that's where the whole web
is moving acknowledging that there are few thins not security and
privacy relevant out there.
It's, for example, one additional step to make it harder for 3rd parties
to spoof "trusted" web sites.

Google chrome will start to show a warning every time you open a
non-https web site some time next year, Apple will force Apps to use TLS
communication with servers from end of this year (and force backend
providers to offer TLS interfaces on the way), it's a general trend, not
just the BBC

I don't think so but with the BBC they do things as they see fit and not
for the benefit of users (i.e. apple HLS streams, users of their apps
and their Web browser are the only users BBC cares about). There are
lots of owners of now "dead" smart BBCiPlayer capable TVs and internet
radios and worried vendors of internet radio who are trying to get HLS
and DASH working who dislike the BBC way of moving forward with a new
standard every few years.

[SlimDevices: Plugins] BBC possible move to HTTPS for content delivery ?

2016-09-19 Thread farrina

I recently noticed that the BBC UK homepage is now showing as encrypted
(using https)

Interested, poking around I located a BBC Blog note written by a Paul
Tweedy, a BBC Lead Technical Architect - see here ''
(http://bbc.in/29GCmEO) explaining the rationale behind the change and
their future intentions.

One particular sentence in his article that caught my eye was under the
heading "Next steps and challenges" and it indicated that they intended
to "Evaluating audio/video delivery via HTTPS"

Obviously there are no detailed indications as to their intentions but
pondering from a position of extreme technical ignorance (and also as an
avid user of the excellent BBC iPlayer and BBC iPlayer Extrax plugins) I
wonder if https was to come to pass if this would have any technical
implications for future streaming and the use of the above plugins.

Any uber geeks out there care to comment ?

Cheers

Alan
