I've never run OS 9, so I have no input (other than to say I repeatedly hear
that it runs kinda slow on a stock 1400). Are you thinking of getting a G3
upgrade at some point?
What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any

That said, OS 9 has much more native PPC code than does OS 8.6. With lots
of RAM and a faster-than-original HD (for speedy-ish VM) OS 9 is faster
in use than any other classic Mac OS. PPC code uses more resources (RAM
HD space) than 68K code, so you'll not be happy if you have less than

The biggest thing I liked about OS 9 was the Software Update feature, which
was a great improvement over having to figure out what updates you needed
and where they could be found. However, now all updates are out for OS 9. I
went from System 7 to System 9. I really liked 9.

When I installed a NuPowr upgrade, there was one file. You run the install
program with the old CPU installed, shut down, install the new CPU and
reboot. Very simple. Installing the CPU is as simple as installing RAM.
The installer I used was the NUpowr 3 v1.0.0 installer.

Some model Hitachi and IBM drives are definitely known to be noisier, you
will see frequent disclaimers that clicking noises from them are normal.

should handle your specified tasks handily). The screen is color and has
good contrast and visibility, the keyboard is very nice and a pleasure to

I had similar problems, and they were because the bottom part of the clicker
mechanism had broken off. If you are looking at the clicker mechanism from
the side, it's shaped like a U turned on its side. The switch is on the
bottom of the top half of the U, and it engages the bottom half

I am hardly the expert here, but I seem to recall reading that the 1400's
Infrared port was NOT IrDA standards compliant. To the best of my knowledge,
the Infrared will only work to communicate with another 1400.

My experience is somewhat similar, Ron. I got my first PowerBook 1400 for
$10 (including a carrying case and power supply), and it worked like a
champ. I then bought a supposedly non-working PB1400 for $6 to get the
bookcover (my original did not have it). Found out AFTER bending the

parts I bought off Epay. The complete units were all in questionable
condition but had the parts I wanted. I now have all the best goodies

Actually, there is a bracket - it's a thin metal item that has a tab that
fits into the side of the case and overlaps the hard drive cable. Makes it
extremely hard to get a hard drive back in without taking the case partially
apart or taking a chance on trying to yank the cable out from where

screens. Just be careful with the two plugs that go into the sockets on the

Can anyone give me a step-by-step procedure or maybe point me to any web
page telling how to install OS 7.6 on a PowerBook DUO from scratch? I tried
on both a Duo230 and a 280C, and both punked out on me with an error message
at the same point during installation.

automatically. So, first update the driver with hdsc setup, then run
disktools
to check out the hard disk, and then do your install and I'll bet it will
