how about avoiding any possible problem and don't delete the accounts...
just have them no longer included in the fetch mail settings, I have
some old ones hanging around like that and I moved them simply to the
bottom of my accounts list and don't worry about nor think about them.

I have a long standing problem with my search index that I have tried to
rebuild by starting up with command pressed down and by choosing index
rebuild. Then later when conducting a search I was asked if I wanted to
index a large amount of messages -funny as PM most likely should have
done that
