I've been printing my own checks for years. Regular laser printer, no
MICR. I had a problem with my original bank a couple of years after I
first started. I changed banks. My understanding is many banks use
optical scanners now. Between online billing and this I almost never
hand-write a check
Optical Scanners = No MICRS needed I guess. Good to know.

Don't you need MICR ink for that? That's what kept me from printing my

a check, or a similar instrument with a fee paid by the person

Banks insist that I do need the MICR ink.
Yet, most of the time, the checks show up with clear detail.
And in any event, no check was every denied.
