Re: [PEDA] tests for Pb in solder
My last email seemed to take over 12 hours to appear on the list, if this one is the same its going to be a slow conversation :-o You're right, I haven't noticed the difference in a measly 3-4 years. I agree with your thoughts but it does indicate that it's not a complete disaster. I know several people with Sony TV's that are over 20 years old and still going strong, I hope Sony (and the others) are convinced that the change will not affect the long term reliability. I like Sony VCRs (VHS, not Beta) because they are easy to setup and program. But it seems they've given me a reason not to buy anymore. Again I agree but you will find that any stuff made in Japan is now probably lead free and they are starting to spread, a quick search on Goggle yesterday indicated that a couple of Sony plants in Mexico are also completely lead free and have been for several years. One last thought, several people have pointed out that certain classes of equipment will be exempt i.e. Military, medical etc but if all the assemble companies have switched to lead free who is still going to do lead based assembly (and at what premium)? I know that once we have gone lead free we will probably never be able/ willing to go back. Re: [PEDA] tests for Pb in solder
Most of the major Japanese manufactures have been lead free for over 3 or 4 years, I guess there reliability is so good as you haven't even noticed the difference ;-) I have looked into this over here (in the UK) and it seems Sony are one of the world leaders, they have patents all over there technology/ materials/ processes and are not going to share it with any one :-( Regards, Peter Smith -Original Message- From: Bagotronix Tech Support [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 August 2004 21:35 To: Protel EDA Forum Subject: Re: [PEDA] tests for Pb in solder Rene: your wish comes too late. No, I've been wishing this for years ;-) I have not checked the EU rules lately, but IIRC they have some exemptions for industrial, medical, and military equipment. Since our products are used in these areas, I think we fall into this category. If anyone has links to the latest lead-free rules, please post them. Any discussion is meaningless? Who does the EU think they are, rulers of the world? That's our (U.S.'s) divine right ;-) But seriously, unless someone can show a formula and process that has good long-term solder joint reliability (as good or better than Pb), there is going to be serious trouble with lead-free. Imagine the implications of early solder joint failure of lead-free electronic equipment: 1) Expensive automobiles having to be scrapped prematurely because their ECMs quit working, and all the junkyard car ECMs don't work either, due to the same failure of solder joints 2) Costly equipment failures in telecom and industrial equipment. Medical equipment failures resulting in possible patient injury or death, and the inevitable lawsuits. 3) Disillusionment of the public when their consumer goods fail soon after the warranty period expires Cheap goods (MP3 players, clock radios, etc.) won't be subject to the same expectation of quality as more expensive goods. You can bet the consumer will be outraged when their $5000 plasma TV stops working after 1 year. Re: [PEDA] Multiple Displays
Hi, In the office here we all run dual Dell 2000FP LCD panels an absolute bargain considering the size and spec (1600x1200 pixels, CVBS in, DVI in, YC in). All set at 1600 x 1200 and they are fantastic. For graphics cards we have gone with an Nvidia card that has dual DVI output, we found the Dells analogue RGB to be quite poor. We paid about £500 each for the Dells (but we bought 8 in one go) but I have seen them on eBay for a lot less than this. Before this I had a 19 and 17 dual CRT setup, still good but not as good as the dual LCD (soo much more relaxing on the eye's). The last thing I will say is you really want to run both display at the same resolution, it soon becomes a pain if you don't. I'm hoping those with experience can guide me in the right direction. I'm thinking about adding a 15 or 17 inch flat panel as the secondary display to my 21 CRT. I thought the flat panel would be used for display of panels and reports while the CRT would be used for the editing workspace. Here are some things I'm curious sure about: 1. Is this a good strategy? 2. Is my proposed mix of CRT and flat panel even feasible, and can the flat panel be set for a lower resolution than the CRT. If this is hardware dependant, is there anything special I should know? 3. I'd like to hear about multi-display configurations that work especially well (or don't work well). Re: [PEDA] Network issues
Switch your server to Linux ??? After I sent the email to this list I copied the test project onto our Linux (Red Hat, latest version) server, it was just as slow as the w2k server :-( It sounds like your project file may be very big. Not really, my test project is only about 6MB so from your email it looks like the 'conflict' is on our network some place. Its not worth me spending to much time on it at the moment as we are geeting a complete new server (and five PC's) before the end of the month, so every thing could change (for the better or worse). [PEDA] Network issues
Hi, After reading a similar post on the DXP forum I wonder if any one can help me. I am currently using Protel 99SE (SP6) with all my data files stored on a server. When I try and open the current project it takes 2 minutes 27 seconds to open. If I copy the project to my local drive it takes less than 4 seconds to open. All our PC's are running w2k (including the server) and the network generally is very lightly loaded. Can I do anything to improve these delays? Re: [PEDA] ClientBasic footprint generator.
Here it is! The QFP TSOP footprint generator which works with the actual measurements provided by you IC manufactures data sheets. I have tried your QFP footprint generator and I think I found a bug. Sorry! I used it to create a footprint for a 144 pin TQFP and in metric mode the pads are spaced 220mm apart instead of 22mm. If I enter all the dimensions in imperial its OK. The information I entered in 'box' order is 36, 22, 0, 36, 22, 0.5, 0.27, 0.75, 1, 2, 0.04, 0. Can anybody confirm my findings or am I just being stupid (which is possible for me)?
