Hi,
Angelos is right. Building QGIS for Application:Geo is based on packages from
the default repositories (python, ...) and from Application:Geo (geos,
gdal, ...). If you use other repositories for kde, qt, python etc. qgis will
likely fail.

Thanks to Angelos, my QGIS 1.7.4 is now working fine from the Geo repository,
with full python plugin functionality.
The problem was my fault, for including the factory repository as well as the
12.1 version.

I had a problem with the installation of QGIS 1.7.3 in the same version of
OpenSUSE as yours. The problem was caused by a missing dependency also
related to python. I've posted the problem in the forum, but so far there
wasn't a reply:
