Look's like there's a problem with the georeferenced layer or perhaps
the CRS or the coordinates of the base map.

it's left-click (node1), left-click (node2), right-click (finish line,
no new node) at least in 2.8; used to be different until 2.4(?).
You can suppress the attributes' form popping up in options-digitizing.

shapefile does not appear, but when i digitize my new shapefile while
not snapping to any other files it does appear, and then i can alter
that shape by snapping the nodes to the files i want it snapped to.

When tracing lots of abutting polygons my preferred method is to to use
lines and polygonize them.

No - there isn't.
But if you work with polygons you can automatically substract already
existing neighbour polygons. In the snap options dialogue set the "avoid
intersections" checkbox. This is even more comfortable and faster than
the tracing mode in my opinion, but it is limited to polygons
like ARC Gis is there a way of tracing boundaries when you digitize so
that there are no spatial errors? I know there is snapping, but
sometimes that doesn't work as well.
