[Qgis-user] Mysterious coordinates (Italy)
Solve one mystery and another appears! This isn't really a QGIS issue, but I'm wondering if there's someone out there who'd be willing to give me a hand anyway. I'm processing a series of data sheets of bird observations from volunteer observers throughout Italy. We specify decimal degrees, WGS84 (UTM 33 o 32N), but as you can imagine, the coordinates come in all shapes and sizes and trying to standardise them is a real challenge. I'm having a particular problem trying to understand (and therefore subsequently convert), the following group of coordinates: N 3915.452 E 1655.732 N 3913.887 E 1655.653 N 3905.717 E 1703.311 N 3902.444 E 1701.229 N 3902.936 E 1701.405 N 3904.791 E 1654.796 N 3904.668 E 1652.784** N 3906.065 E 1657.129 N 3905.403 E 1701.755 N 3909.825 E 1659.315 N 3909.479 E 1657.053 N 3912.038 E 1655.576 N 3912.436 E 1656.515 N 3911.025 E 1659.291 N 3911.148 E 1659.506 N 3911.347 E 1659.521 N 3911.824 E 1659.739 They should all fall in the province of Crotone in Calabria, Italy, but nothing I've tried gets them there :-(. To give an idea, the coordinates with an asterix (N 3904,668 - E 1652,784) should fall in the vicinity of coordinates: N 391373746 - E 16,8745837 (Roccabernarda in the province of Crotone). Re: [Qgis-user] Functionality matrix
Might I also add that it is hard to generalize software functionality because of licensing levels and implementation tiers. Can I create Voronoi (Thiessen) polygons within ArcMap? Yes and no. I can with an Advanced license, but not if I have Basic or Standard. I don't have to worry about that with QGIS. Does the Esri software platform allow connection to PostgreSQL databases? Yes and no. I have an Advanced level license of ArcGIS Desktop installed on my laptop, but because I do not have an Enterprise-level ArcSDE installation, I cannot access my PostgreSQL database. QGIS allows me direct access without the fuss. Need to perform a simple task like converting your polygons to lines? You'll need an Advanced Desktop license in the software that must not be named... but it is as simple as VectorGeometry ToolsPolygons to lines in QGIS (2.2). And, of course, depending on the desired result, there may not be a single tool within either software that gets you what you want. I have performed a lot of drive-time analysis for fire station ISO ratings, and right now, that's just easier in the Esri software, however I feel like improved support for that is on the horizon for QGIS along with some other more advanced analysis tasks. Re: [Qgis-user] Mysterious coordinates (Italy)
Hi Sarah, I think what you may have for (N 3904,668 - E 1652,784) is actually degrees, minutes and decimal minutes: N 39d 04min .668dec min (or 40.08sec [.668*60]) = N 39d 04min 40.08 sec E 16d 52min .784 dec min (or 47.04sec [.784*60]) = N 16d 52min 47.04 sec or in decimal degrees N 39.0778 E 16.879733 This puts the point about 7km south of Roccabernarda. In the UK and US a dot is usually the decimal point, in Europe a comma is often the decimal point. Re: [Qgis-user] Functionality matrix
I tend to break it down at the Macro level when trying to explain the comparability. See pg 17 http://www.scribd.com/doc/172165387/Introduction-to-Geospatial-The-open-source-method Notice I don't ever expect a 1:1, part of the key is understanding that open source is a collection of software together under various names, where other well known software is a behemoth under one name but is really a bunch of separately developed parts too. In reality the number of primitives in geospatial is actually not that large, it's the remixing combinations of how you apply the ideas that turns into the thousands of functions listed. There is a way to do most things in any system, some of them are one-click and some of them are complicating chaining of simpler steps. If you are specifically trying to transition and need to know how to do the equivalent... then the key is to figure out what the common term is for the process not the software specific word they picked. For that Internet search engines crawling nabble, stackexchange, various blogs seems to find most answers. Last resort ask on the mailing list or IRC and explain what you are trying to do (not what software Y calls it) and someone is likely to know a way. Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS VALMIERA doesn't open project file by double clicking

I can open project only by using open Project, starting the program! someone can help me? It might be that your installation broke at some stage. Please have a look at postinstall.log (standalone) or C:\OSGeo4W\var\log\setup.log.full for any error messages. If you installed the 64bit version, try the 32bit. It might be that your PATH variable exceeds 1024 charcters, which then needs some cleaning to get QGIS running.
