[Ql-Users] Winzip and pdf
I have QPC2 v4.05 on my W10 machine, which is connected to the Internet. The QPC2 boot file is in WIN1, which is on a button. There are other WIN files. Recently the WIN1 file could not be opened. The reason was that it was named WIN.pdf I have an earlier version of QPC2 on a W7 machine, which is never connected to the Internet, and does not have WINZIP loaded. It has the same WIN files as the W10 machine. The WIN file from that machine was copied onto a flash drive, and it was checked to be in QPC2 format before the drive was removed. The drive was then inserted into the W10 machine, and immediately the WIN file had become WIN.pdf. The situation was cured by uninstalling WINZIP on the W10 machine. and recopying the WIN1 file. When WINZIP was downloaded I do not recall selecting any settings which would cause it to change the extensions of resident files, which is what appears to have happened, but memory fails with age. Dilwyn, Hmm! Saturday night is TV night. Besides that wouldn't an earlier notice be more fruitful. We don't all live by the laptop. Not that I'd have much to contribute in any case. [Ql-Users] Copyright
When a member of the Bristol Group, I remember being told that any program lodged in the QL system automatically became public domain. Can that be confirmed? Whilst searching the web, one site virtually stated that anything a person produces is automatically subject to copyright. Another site stated that copyrights can be registered. Do any of the QL programs expressly claim copyright? Compare the situation with that of books, many display the word 'copyright' on an introductory page. Entering the sordid topic of coin, it is difficult to imagine that it would profit any originator of a QL program to seek recompense from the courts for infringement of copyright. Consider the value of past sales, future possible sales, and legal costs. The case would have to be based on the miss-selling of a number of programs to create a sufficiently large claim. I have used Text87 almost since its availability. In those far back days I spoke to a member of the firm which produced it, and he explained some of its facilities. Later my memory failed, and I could not reconstruct the steps from the manual. From this, I suggest that whilst the program is very good, its value is diminished from the fact that its manual is seriously deficient. I suspect that situation could exist for many QL programs. They are written by insiders for the use of insiders. As regards the QL dying, to me the main factor for this is the inability of the QL community to create a system of durable software which would enable the purchaser of a machine (emulator) to instantly have a day-to-day coherent usable collection of programs not prone to enthusiasts ideosyncrasies. Has copyright in the electronic sense been investigated? An author publishes an article, and an individual makes one copy of it for only his use. That is allowable, but there could be qualifications of the situation. Colin McKay ___ QL-Users Mailing List

Dell XPS M1530 laptop running Vista I run QPC2 v4.02 with SMSQ/E v3.19. In QPC2 I use a 512x256 window to suit drawings. This fills the display, which is a nuisance when it would help to minimise it, because the three top right corner buttons from Windows are obscured . Are there QL keyboard codes which do the minimising, maximising, & sleep? Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop running Windows 7 QPC2 v4.00 with SMSQ/E v3.16 The three Windows buttons are always visible. Tim, A should equal 4.242641. Apologies. VV is double vee. Marcel, So when there is any chance that ACOS has to work on any number close to 1, or -1, a check such as IF VV>1 THEN : VV=1 has to be incorporated on every occasion? A=242641, B=2.828427, C=1.414214. VV=C^2-A^2-B^2/(-2*A*B) VV calculated, and printed, in QPC2 =1. VV calculated on a calculator =-24.0071/-24.0071=1. Used in QPC2 in RR=ACOS(VV) produces the error message "At line 2345 :1 error in expression". Change to VV=INT(.), and no error message is produced. Change to VV=INT(.)+1E-10, and no error message is produced. Change to VV=INT(.)+1E-9, and the error message is produced. Alternatively precede RR=ACOS(VV) with IF VV>1 THEN VV=1 together with IF VV<-1 THEN VV-1. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I use QPC2 on a laptop running W7. At the same time I have Autocad running, and I frequently switch between the two. Sometimes I minimise one program before awakening the other, and sometimes I open one on top of the other. I have not had any difficulties. The only other factor is that the laptop is never connected to the Internet. Colin McKay 34 Taylor Avenue Tel/fax 01505 70 4471 Kilbarchan Johnstone Renfrewshire PA10 2LS ___ QL-Users Mailing List
[Ql-Users] QLis30 dinner
I expect to attend the event, and the evening meal. I opt for the carvery. If this is to be at the Toby Carvery in Corstorphine, then I can thoroughly recommend it from visits there approximately 4 years ago. However, seating probably would be on the basis of find a seat for yourself. At lunch times it can be quite crowded. Is it expected that accompanying womenfolk will be welcome to attend the dinner? The latest suggestion was that in terms of a meeting room, the event would extend over one day, i.e. a Saturday. Supposing the hours will be between 10am until 6pm, i.e. 8 hours, how will the various topics suggested by Geoff relate to each other in terms of time, and sound interference? An outside interest could be introduced in the form of a talk from a member of Edinburgh University's Computing Department on general computer developments, just to give the boffins of the QL world something to aim for, also general interest. Will the event be open to the public? If so, then a two day meeting could be more appropriate with only one day open to the public. QL people would be needed to deal with the public. As an extreme fringe member of this interchange I ask this: The intention appears to be to do more than just turn up to an empty room on the morning of the show, and quickly set up tables and chairs, also lay out a number of extension leads. For better preparation, how many people are there within practical reach of Cambridge to do suitable physical management of the event?
